"June Xbox One software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth."

I wish we could get the nitty gritty details of updates like this when they come. I find API updates fascinating and I've love to hear exactly how they benefit these platforms.

Phil Spencer's tweets come off as empty PR to me most of the time. Some of the tweets are downright weird. Look at last night's stuff. He replies to random people asking him to follow them. Why? What's the point? For people who ask for backwards compat he gives an almost condescending pat on the head. "Nice Conker pic", he says to a guy with a blurry avatar of Birdy who didn't even mention anything about Conker. It's like he's trying too hard to please as much people as he can with the emptiest teases he can possibly think of. I don't know, I'm still not a believer.

His point is still off since the games he mentioned were designed to hit 1080p and aren't third party titles.

So if someone could demonstrate a reasonable number of third-party titles running at 1080p, would it have any effect on that point? Also, you'll notice I didn't edit his comment, so he did mean what he said, people were just misreading it.

Sony could never update their SDK again and still be ahead for the rest of the generation with regard to performance. 176GB/s memory bandwidth (not theoretical, actual and constant) combined with a more powerful GPU guarantees that.

Who is arguing this?

More available bandwidth for Xbox One is a good thing, full stop.

Time to bust out that list which includes Peggle 2.

Better to have good PR than bad PR?

Think it will. We'll see though.

Doubt it. Especially since many of the games already out will get sequels soon.

Might as well just save it for the sequels since the improvement will be greater.

Thats why mentioned cod ghosts.

I meant we wont be seeing 720p X1 games when the same PS4 games are 900/1080p

I think Cod ghosts and BF4 where the exceptions.

We will be seeing A minimum of Xone792p/PS4900p

and Xone900p/PS41080p

With this GPU boost+ better tools I wonder what watch dogs what of been if it had access to them.

I guess we will see this fall or possibly 2015 (if devs only have got access it to it in june) what difference it makes.

So you're saying examples of other third-party titles fitting the criteria would have no effect on a pre-determined impression, because it could possibly include titles that are less technically demanding (in addition to ones which aren't)?

It's true that both systems' tool will mature and improve, but the xbone was bogged down my many handicaps that are slowly being resolved, while the PS4 is seemingly already figured out, and without many cards up its sleeves. Therefore, the perception of maturity and improvement of the xbone will be far greater, IMO. They barely even exploited the cloud and ESRAM's flexible dual bandwidth, so I'm very optimistic.

Yea, cause that power of the cloud is miraculously going to greatly improve the XOne's graphical prowess. lol... The PS4 may not have had all of the handicaps as the XOne, but over this generation it will improve just like the PS3 did. The performance gains the XOne may gain from the freed up Kinect resources won't be anything earth shattering. Regardless, it's still great to see Microsoft make some improvements. In the end, all gamers win.

It really is just that simple. As games on PS4 become more and more demanding, and take futher advantage of GPGPU compute, and Huma, the xbone will struggle further with its own version of the game.

900P, 792P, etc, is here to stay.

Does it bother you? (serious question, since I have no idea what your point is with that post)

With this and dx12 next year parity is looking like a real possibility.

You sound kind of salty.

is there anyway they can get rid of the esram on the next version of the X1?
If they really let programmers manage that memory and use parts of it for whatever, it's going to be really hard to take that feature away.

Plus if they replace it, they have to replace it with something at least as fast under any realistic circumstance. Say, they switch to faster main memory. To replace ESRAM with this fully, it'd need higher bandwidth than both the current main memory and the ESRAM combined. Also, remember all the fun discussions we had about ESRAM latency
which is as irrelevant now as it was then if you ask me
.

What are you talking about?
Who said XBO will never see 1080p?

I'm glad you asked!

Nah there is no way QB will be native 1080p, have good AA and a solid framerate. If not even Crytek can do it, no one can in the foreseeable future. The experts here have already determined that the eSRAM limits things too much, so Forza only achieves it by having baked lighting, no AA and using forward rendering, while QB probably uses deferred rendering. It will be 900p at best, maybe 720p.

But it will still look great, which is all that matters at the end of the day. Hope people don't expect too much based of the E3 footage.

I think that sounds about right.

esram is awesome, it's just that they made the same mistake they did with the xbox 360. 10mb edram when they should have went with 12 iirc, xbox one has 32mb when they should have went with 64mb.

Between some posters deluded with achieving parity and other salty about X1 getting performance boosts, I salute Phil for being able to get a constant stream of good news for the Xbox platform, it deserves better than what happened last year. I hope this and DX12 let game makers reach even better visuals.

Awesome. Is that enough to get to 900p games to 1080p and 792p games to 900p?

I would like to know, over the time, if the number of games with inferior resolution in x1 (vs ps4) is going to grow or not. I think at some point we 'll reach resolution parity. Or maybe im just being optimistic about my console! :P

Those were fun (hilarious) threads to read, all of them. First it was the amazing "esoteric" esram, then it was SHAPE that was going to lend a hand with enormous Gflops of power, then it was latency, oh boy, latency was everything, after that 15 coprocessors were going to do heavy lifting... Then it was the CPU..

Now it's DX 12 and 8% stolen from snap.

We discovered that Esram is a band aid, and that the overall memory bandwidth really isn't that great, and PS4 has full Huma implementation. We discovered that SHAPE doesn't add any rendering power (lol) and that in fact the ps4 has an even BETTER audio chip. We learned that GDDR5 actually has superior latency. We learned that the PS4 CPU is actually stronger, equivalent to 2Ghz..

And we are already seeing the fruit. Multiplats have had the largest performance gaps we've seen in over a decade, and the first party Sony games are starting to really flex hard.

Sports, Racing, Platformers, Puzzle, and Indie will more than likely remain 1080p at the same framerate on both consoles. The "AAA" fast action games though will be different. If 30 FPS, then expect 900p-1080p on the Xbox One. If 60 FPS, then expect 720p-900p.

In terms of COD Advanced Warfare, I would say that it's looking good that it will be 900p on the Xbox One. We'll see though.

Historically performance gaps in consoles were not determinant to platform's success. I had PS1 and N64, where gap was infinite in favor of Nintendo, and best games (and more successful platform) was PS1. Same thing with PS2 / Xbox, and 360/ps3/wii.

Historically the two consoles didn't launch within a week of each other, with the more powerful system being ... cheaper.

Sorry, english is not my native language. No, it doesn't bother me, I just think Spencer has still a lot to prove. I probably posted that in the wrong thread.

You sound kind of salty.

I'm the Salty Hippo, what did you expect? :)

But in all seriousness I AM salty about Phil Spencer, because I'm a huge fan of Rare and I don't forget that this guy was the head of Microsoft Game Studios for the last 5+ years. I don't think he did a very good job during that time.

I do think he's doing a good job so far in his new role in terms of hardware, services and policies, but I still think he's unproven when it comes to building a great library of exclusive games. If anything, his track record speaks against him. E3 will be key to finally change that.

Cuz gamez aren't gamez.

"Very few games on the Xbox One are 1080p."

--Posts list of games showing that the majority of them are 1080p--

"NO NO NO! I meant real games! Not indies... even though the PS4 having more indie games is a great advantage!"

lol at the people saying Spencer is all talk. He has been the head of Xbox for what, 2 months? Over that two months, here is what Microsoft has announced:

1) The much-demanded Kinectless sku for $399
2) Removal of the app 'pay-wall' that was so frequently criticized.
3) Games with Gold for XB1, emulating PS4s system
4) This GPU performance boost
5) External storage support

I mean, jesus fucking christ, what more can a guy do in that period of time? Hopefully Spencer gets the parity clause dropped and announces their plans for PC support in the next few weeks, so people can continue baselessly saying he is all talk.

^^ All of that stuff was probably greenlit in 2013, long before Phil "All Talk, No Action" Spencer moved in to claim all of the glory.

Awesome. Is that enough to get to 900p games to 1080p and 792p games to 900p?

No, we're talking more 800p and 910p respectively.

It still will be nowhere near enough to cover up the Xbone's design flaws and deficiencies compared to the PS4 in multiplatform games.

Forget parity I think XB1 will overtake PS4 with these improvements especially when you factor in the cloud.
Is there some way GAF can set a temporary ban on this phrase for E3 week? Poe's Law is in effect for this statement arguably more than any other hardware-related thing lately. Even checking post histories doesn't automatically show proper intent. It legitimately wrecks the enjoyment of some threads.

Mentions of "The Cloud" would be fine since it has legitimate uses, just not this fantasy secret sauce version. Bandwidth needn't and shouldn't be wasted on such console warring bait when it's at such a premium.

If the problem lies in the esram, what visual fidelity has to do with it?

The ESRAM is currently being used to store the framebuffer, which is the easiest thing to use it for whilst maximising performance.

Problem is, it's not very big so the bigger the frame the less stuff it can have in it.

In a nutshell.
