Jurassic Park 3D |OT| It's a UNIX system! I know this!

I had never caught or understood the joke the lawyer Gennaro makes, asking if the scientists in the lab exhibition are "auto..erotic?".

Saw it last night after not having seen it from start to finish since the 90s. I think I really appreciated the characters more this time around. Also, even though the science is bullshit, I still want to believe.

Twenty years later, it's still a really awesome movie, albeit with a rather abrupt end. The VFX, too...wow. It's amazing that they still look that good, and I'm so glad the touch-ups have been minimal.

It's crazy how cinema went from JP's breakthrough CG and practical effects to Episode 1's utter CG dysphoria in only 6 years.

Went with my Dad and sisters last night to watch it. Im a huge fan of Jurassic Park and never got a chance to catch it in theaters back in 93. This was just nostalgia coming back hard last night. It was amazing. The 3d was subtle and used well. It just made it all come back to life last night.

So I saw it a third time, this time in real IMAX 3D. Yesssss. So loud, so good. Theater was about half full which was decent for a weekday, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it. A few scenes, particularly the raptor jumping through the pipes at Ellie made people jump.

May I post a link to a cartoon I made about Jurassic Park here, guys?
Because guys, I wrote a Jurassic Park cartoon.
Please, guys? It's only a minute long...
Here it is, guys.
Because I love Jurassic Park.
Saw it in 3D with the kid (now grown up) who played, "More like a six foot turkey." He got an applause break at the IMAX we were in.

Hah, thats awesome!

i looked into a little bit. its suspected to have take a T-Rex a little under 20 years to grow to full size.

wikipedia (not the best place to reference, sure) says that it would take a brachiosaurus about 10 years to grow to full size if it were endothermic. the movie talks about the raptors being endothermic though. so, maybe all the dinos are.

Dino growth rates are still something being debated, but one could always assume InGen sped them up.

That still blows my mind that we never knew this until 20 years later.

Another awesome read, thanks!

Saw it the other night on IMAX 3D. Still an amazing movie.

I thought the picture was a bit dark for most of the movie tbh. The sound was amazing though. Those 3D glasses hurts to wear for my big head. The CG still holds up better than most recent movies. I'm astonished by this. The entire t-rex scene is some of the best movie moments of all time. It reminded me how much of a badass creature it was. I could've done without the 3d effects, but some of it was effective. The raptor jumping up to snipe at the girl in the vents made me jump a little out the way lol. Also, in the scene with the herd running towards Sam and the kids, there was a huge log in the foreground that popped out. I actually tried looking over that log to get a better view, then caught myself doing it a second later and was thinking to myself, I'm such a dummy lol.

Easily recommends this movie to anyone who haven't seen it.

I saw this for the first time in a long while and couldn't believe how this 20 year old movie holds up so beautifully, you could almost literally just release this exactly how it is and still have it be a blockbuster.

Watching it on the big screen again was something special, like this was the moment Jurassic Park went from a kind of 'modern classic' to just straight-up 'classic' that's right up there with Wizard of Oz and Star Wars and The Little Mermaid. I imagine that's what it might feel like to see my kids graduate or something.

My GF and I both did that as well! I have never done that during a 3D movie, so the effect was awesome.

Wow. I hadn't seen this since I was like 13. I liked it before, but now I think I love it. Some absolutly incredile shots I didn't appreciate before.

We had a girl in our group who actually managed to have no idea what the premise was even about. We found this out like ten minutes before the movie started. She shrieked several times through the movie (quite a few people in the theater did)

We asked her if it was what she expected when we got out and she was like "I think I thought it was like, a documentary..."

just got back, still goddamned amazing. the first time i ever actually got to see it in a theater since as a kid the only thing i had was a vhs i practically wore holes in and missed half the clever parts of

it was funny seeing 3d previews that were distracting as hell and then this 20 year old conversion comes up and it looks better than them

Ok, so are you referring to the Iron Man 3 3D trailer? Because if so, I also thought it looked awful- it really strained my eyes. Thankfully JP3D was very easy on the eyes.

Things like that just reminds me not everyone in the world has a geek outlook.

Still... how can anyone NOT know what Jurassic Park is? A documentary? lol...I mean, you don't need to be geek at all to know what kind of movie it is. It's like thinking that Star Wars could be a documentary about space travel.

Saw it this past weekend with the wife. I clearly remember seeing it originally 20 years ago because I was on vacation at St. Andrews in Scotland, same vacation & theatre I saw the Super Mario Bros. movie in (which is an amusing contrast). I don't care much for the 3D either way but boy, was I ever glad to get the chance to see Jurassic Park on the big screen again. Felt like it hadn't aged a day. Just brilliant.

Wow, so I knew JP3D got a new color grading, but I didn't realize how noticeable it was until I compared the two.

Its worth noting that they didn't change it, and that the amber color grading was requested by Spielberg as it was closer to the original release.

Went and saw it today. I was the one and only person in the theater, so it felt like a private screening or something.

It was amazing how much it still holds up today. And the 3D was really well done and is further proof its more than just a gimmick. I probably saw it 8-9 times when it first came out, but this was just something else. Fully captures what was so great about it.

3D version looks way worse :/

Is it noticeable in the theaters?

Here are some old production stills from the original release of JP showing off the orange hue:

It was there, but we haven't seen it since like 1993 as the releases did away with it. Spielberg brought it back for this release. Also, I still own Jurassic Park The Movie Storybook, and I checked the pictures and they are indeed warmer than the last Blu Ray. As for it being as noticeable in theaters? No, not at all. And quality is a TON better than the 2011 Blu Ray.. they scanned it to 4K for the theatrical run.

Well then at the very least we'll get a 3D Bluray release of Jurassic Park if not the inferior sequels of course... :)

I like the the new color timing, but they scrubbed pretty much all the film grain away, which means they scrubbed all the detail away. Hopefully they release a 2D remaster with the improved color timing AND proper grain.

While I understand this complaint, its worth noting that all the fine detail was there in the theatrical 3D release. And speaking of the 3D, I would guess that is why they felt the need to do away with the grain..it would probably fuck up with the effect big time. Anyways, I own the 2011 Blu Ray and overall I feel the quality isn't worth the grain..its just far too noisy. Its too bad the 3D Blu Ray doesn't have all of the finer detail of the past Blu Ray and 3D theatrical release, but overall the image looks nicer to me.

Besides, you can see quite a bit of detail here:

It could be better, especially considering it was a 4K scan.. but for the amount of DNR applied he remains detailed, and not waxy looking.

The remaster looks so fucking good.

If a 2D release doesn't happen, Imma be pissed.

Be sure to send them an email.. I know they will give the stock response, but at the very least the more requests they get the better chance it will be noticed.

Now I'm happy I got the first bluray release. What the hell?

edit: And I actually prefer this movie with grain...

Yeah, I hope this is just a horrible screengrab, because the loss of detail in the Rex is ridiculous.

I grabbed the orange rex from a youtube trailer, so its less than ideal. Sadly there are no HD caps..

I will admit, the loss of fine detail is not the best, and the warmer color seems like they went too far in some scenes.. but overall, I like it better. I would really like some good caps of the original theatrical release, or VHS so we can compare the color grading.

Thanks, I'll reserve judgment until we get some direct rips.

As for the warmer grade, I'm impartial, though I think the "neutral" grade in the blu-ray wasn't bad looking.

Finally managed to watch this last night.

Girlfriend and I went to catch it and were almost the only people in the theater (maybe like 10 people total). I am not going to lie- I got choked up big time with Dr. Grant saw the brontosaurus. This movie defined my childhood. Saw it three times in theaters (still the only film I've watched more than once in theaters), I watched it daily for nearly a year once I got it on VHS, I would play with my Jurassic Park dinosaurs constantly, and I would just consume anything and everything related to dinosaurs for at least three years afterward. It was beyond great getting to see it on a big screen and have proper theater sound once more. I hope my girlfriend wasn't watching me, because I was grinning like a mad man the entire time.

I'm itching to go again, haha.

Must say, the 3D was really, really well done. I hate stereoscopic stuff, but they did a really fantastic job.

I don't think it's very useful to judge based on YouTube trailers.

EDIT: Oh wait, the comparisons further up look pretty bad. What happened? JP3D looked amazing in theatres. :(

God I love this movie.

I seriously fucking love this franchise - no damage done by JP2 or 3 or the terrible old Topps comics could make me hate it. In fact, I love 90% of Lost World (and no, the 10% is not the T-rex scene at the end...I'm still bitter they removed the raptors...how ELSE could those people in the ship's cabin have been torn apart?).

Just watched Lost World the other night and I was saying to my wife that it felt like they intended to have raptors on the boat originally because I just couldn't see Spielberg making such a huge mistake. So is that a known thing that a raptor segment got cut there? Would love to know more about it.

Also, after watching this right after JP3D (and reading the first JP book for the first time) it's a real step down. Still a lot of fun, but certainly not a classic. I plan on reading through The Lost World next, so I'm curious to see how different it ends up being.

There was a written, but deleted scene where raptors were actually loose on the boat. The T-Rex also gets loose and the three of them basically kill everyone on board.

There's also some concept shots of raptors in San Diego, but it seems like the internet has swallowed those up in the last 10 years.

Yeah, the second disc is sadly the old Blu Ray.
My tv has passive tv and reminds me to put on glasses and press "ok". If I don't, it reverts to 2D displaying only one angle or whatever would be the correct term. Does this not apply for most 3D tvs? I'm pretty sure I can even manually switch it to 2D.

edit: oh, I'm guessing we're talking about non-3dtv owners wanting to see it. I'm not sure what happens if you put a 3d disc in while hooked up to a 2d only tv...
