Just finished Persona 4 Golden. I feel empty inside

I'm still debating whether to get this for £12 in the sale. I've played through the first few hours of the PS2 version and love the story and chatting to people but those God awful dungeon sections really put me off. Someone convince me to go for it.

P4G is much easier so the dungeoning goes by faster. Playing on Very Easy also gives you much more money and EXP, so you'll hardly have to do any leveling at all!

Truth. We all know Yukiko is the one true waifu

I really hope Persona 5 lives up to its predecessor. I mailed a fellow GAFer my copy when I was finished because I wanted to help at least one other individual experience the magic. God tier game. Also, doesn't Persona 4 waifu discussions piss of f the mods? I might be misremembering.

sorry OP you're just going to have to live with that emptiness, better get yourself a PS4 and wait for Persona 5

though I'd recommend Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, has very light persona-isn social links and the cast of characters are of highschool

Vanilla is still great, though P4G is obviously superior in almost every way. Advantages of vanilla include superior Chie and Teddie voices and the complete absence of Marie.

WHAT!?

I can't comprehend how wrong all of this is!!!!

The main advantage of P4 over P4G is that there is actually something resembling difficulty and not just P4G's "everything hits harder and requires more of a grind on higher settings" idea of difficulty

Hmm... that has swayed me a bit. Is it still fun on Very Easy? I don't want to feel like I'm cheating. I usually play action games on the hardest difficulty but I really dislike turn-based combat.

Most of the fun comes from the story, so it's still extremely enjoyable on very easy.

However, I feel like the final Boss fight has more emotional value if you do it on a harder difficulty

I've had this since day one and it's still shrink wrapped. I have no valid excuse as to why I haven't started playing it yet because I know I'll love it.

This might not be exactly what you're looking for... but since you have a Vita you should really play Trails in the Sky (and SC/Second Chapter by extension), the Kiseki community is really pushing this. And after that you should totally get Trails of Cold Steel.

The only thing you can do is play it again.

Nothing marches p4g at all. Simply phenomenal entertainment.

Funny you say that tho, I also had an empty feeling when it was over like I need more of these awesomeness and can't believe it really ended.

Best. Best.

As an aside, Marie is not just best waifu but also best character.

Maybe Easy difficulty is a good compromise then? I think what bothered me a lot about P4 was doing a dungeon for an hour then getting killed by a seemingly impossible-to-beat boss. Then I would have to redo the whole thing again - at which point I would switch it off. I heard P4G is more forgiving with the checkpoints.

I had that feeling with Final Fantasy VII and IX and also Ocarina of Time. I say just grin and bear it and wait for Persona 5.

yeah the save before the boss for every dungeon is a real stress reliever

Know that feel op. Was such a bittersweet feeling when i beat it, then again when i beat P4G. This and FFIX are the only games where ive felt this way about a cast of characters

Chie best girl!

Yep. In Golden the default is to restart from the same floor. Much more forgiving.

Sometimes opinions are just wrong.

I'll maybe give you Chie, (I love her OG voice mostly out of nostalgia) but Dave Wittenberg brought something to Teddie that Sam Riegel, bless his heart, has never been able to replicate.

I think P4 is way better with Marie gone, tho. Sorry. She brings nothing interesting or fun to it.

P4G does away with booting you back to the title screen when you die unless you're playing on Very Hard. You get to restart from the current floor on Easy to Hard, while Very Easy lets you retry battles.

New Game+ in Golden, by the way, lets you freely customise the difficulty. You can switch between any of the default five, or mix and match different buffs or handicaps. Less or more EXP/damage, whether or not to use retries, etc.

So I see Trails in the Sky being thrown around a lot...
Is it a good game? What are the similarities to persona?

Trails of cold steel is more closer to a "persona" experience. Trails in the Sky is different to them both though.

The Trails series itself is in my opinion better than the Persona series in terms of characters and story. Even the NPCs are fleshed out and the sidequests are fun and hilarious.

It also has an overarching plot that carries on from the Trails in the Sky series and continues in the sequels to it...Trails of Cold Steel being the latest and most recent one.

As to whether it's a good game...well... IT'S A SUPERNAL GAME

Having read gaf praise this game over and over, and than having my gf grab me a vita for xmas I had to pick this up. Played for less than an hour but seems interesting. I'm not an anime guy and don't think I've ever finished a final fantasy styled combat game (only did combat once in the dream may differ more) so I'm hoping I can make it though this game. Wish I wasn't working so much so I could try it out more though.

Someone tell me that I'm stupid for expecting Persona 5 to be as good as 4, and explain why.

it's wont be as good. It can't. If they try to replicate it, it's will feel and taste like a clone.

If they do something different, well, it will be different.

If they copy paste it, they the game will feel engineered and all the heart and charm will be gone.

Have you play P3 ? Did you like it ? Maybe you can have a good expectation of P5 if you compare how similar yet different P3 and P4 are.

I played 3 first, and kind of like it more, to be honest. So, hey, maybe there's hope for me.

Had them same problem, I got it at Christmas and binge it, so decided to NG+ it. Then deleted my save trying to install P3P on my PSTV (I failed, need a memory card due to 30MB difference) so I'm just starting it from scratch. Then I'll go through a FeMC P3P playthrough, then do NG+ of each.
It's not ideal, but it keeps me going.
I also picked up Arena to mix things up.

Danganronpa if you want another game with social links.

Persona Dancing All Night for more Persona.

Both Vita exclusives.

Well, P4 destroys P3 in almost everything imo so I wouldn't be surprised if P5 gonna be better than P4.

I'm keeping my expectations in check tho.

I think P4 is way better with Marie gone, tho. Sorry. She brings nothing interesting or fun to it.

Yeah, no. She has the best dungeon and provide some backstory on the entity that caused the entire thing.
Her addition is more than welcome and handled alot better than P3 FES nonsense.

Play on Super Easy or Easy. The dungeons are a grind and way too long. I played for the story. Golden is worth it.

Someone tell me that I'm stupid for expecting Persona 5 to be as good as 4, and explain why.

You're not stupid, it might actually turn out to be better. From what we've seen already, persona 5 looks very different in tone and that's a good thing. They're not trying to replicate the success they had with P4. Meaning they have a chance to blow us away again. Because the game is on PS4(PS3 too) and the fact that's it's the newest game sorta guarantees that at least dungeons, combat, visuals are all better. and Morgana is already ways better than teddie, so there's that too :p

Hmm... that has swayed me a bit. Is it still fun on Very Easy? I don't want to feel like I'm cheating. I usually play action games on the hardest difficulty but I really dislike turn-based combat.

I stuck it on Very Easy. Binged through the whole thing over Christmas. I'm now going through again.
It's not cheating, just play what you enjoy. Otherwise why play?
But yeah, great story, great characters, great humor. It's just great.
Oh, and Chie and Teddie's voices are divisive, so ignore everyone who says one set is better than the other because you may disagree.

Never played the PS2 version and somehow this is the first time I've learned about the different voices. Quickly found a youtube video of examples (for Chie) and... I'm not sure how you can think this! Must be an attachment to what was the original for you. I'd probably feel the same about Naoto going forward although the voices there are very similar.

As for OP. Sorry dude, there's nothing to fill that gap really but at least there are a few follow up titles to revisit your fav characters.

The problem with Q, Dancing all Night etc. is that total lack of relation to your MC. It's a shame they couldn't just give you a few questions at the beginning to tailor characters' responses towards relationships you built.

Ok, right now I'm in the middle of the last dungeon to get the True Ending, so I've got some more gamplay time!

I'm also watching the P3 anime at the same time!

Now, I've seen 4 major recommendations:

1) Persona 2
2) Danganronpa
3) Trails in the Sky
4) Absolute despair

1) I already have Persona 1. While I admit it's good, I also admit I'm having some trouble getting trough it. The game is REALLY hard (either that or I really suck). How does P2 fare comparing to P1?
2) The game isn't really a RPG right? More like an Ace Attorney kind of game? What about it's storyline, is it captivating?
3) Trails in the Sky came before Trails of Cold Steel right? Will the outdated graphics put me off? Is it really THAT good?
4) :'(

Regarding Danganronpa;

It has a quirky interesting style to the whole thing, that is pretty cool. No dungeons, but am interesting number of mini games for each trial. The fun part is the social aspect and unique characters. If you enjoyed the social aspect of golden, you might like this. It's unique style is also fun, and a big reason it has a decent following. Very much worth a couple hours checking it out.

1. I have not played 1, but as someone who loved 3 and 4, I really did not like 2. The Social Link system is not there, so there's a lot less role-playing and choosing when and how to get to know the characters. Additionally, I found the progression systems and dungeons to be really bad. Whereas in 3 and 4 the social links and fusion system are your progression systems, expertly integrated into the story, in P2 you have to do things like negotiate with demons in combat to get them to like you. Over and over. Using the same dialogues. It got old very fast. The story and characters seemed interesting, though, so if you can catch it cheap I'd say give it a shot.

2. I wouldn't play this expecting its strengths to be like P4's strengths. Danganronpa is essentially a big mystery played out in the context of a bunch of smaller mysteries that are cases you need to investigate and then debate with the other characters in courtroom type gameplay. But the social aspect is woefully undercooked and it's more a VN than an RPG.

3. This is a fantastic game. It's slow like P4, but tons of dialogue. It's a set story though that you don't really influence, so I wouldn't expect a lot of input into how the characters' relationships evolve. Still, the story and characters are great and the battle system isn't half-bad. Of the three, this would be my recommendation from this list. I don't really think outdated graphics will be a problem, since the game has portraits that portray a character's emotions like P4 (which also doesn't have stellar graphics, but does have great art).

Man, the Marie hate is pretty weird sometimes. Yeah she's a Tsundere but she adds a shit load of content like a dungeon and more back story for the final boss, I can't really see how P4 would be without that stuff.

and that extra dungeon music is great.

The story for the final boss is one of the worst parts about the game seeing as it happens out of nowhere, and loses the more grounded nature made P4 so great.

Having more backstory for the final boss isn't necessarily a good thing. The backstory has to be actually good.

I'm still playing it, but my biggest issue with this series is all the options.

Should I fight to build a social link?

I've never figured a balance.

Guys, I just finished Persona 4 Golden on my PS Vita.

Got the good ending (not that hard) and loved it.

When I started playing it I had just finished Persona 3 Portable for the first time, so the different atmosphere and theme was a bit odd in the beggining.

Damn game really grew on my! The Social Link aspects, the Twin Peaks-esque theme, Kanji (yeah, Kanji is the best)...what a great experience!

Now I need my "Anime-like RPG with a dark story on the background and great date-sim interactions" fix!

What do you guys recommend? On the VITA btw.

Play Xenoblade Chronicles, or Steins;Gate. They have similar character-plot interactions.

I thought it was fine. I watched a LP for vanilla P4 and thought that tease at the end without a resolution was lame. the True Ending epilogue made the ending in Golden pitch perfect.
