Just finished Persona 4 Golden. I feel empty inside

I'm still playing it, but my biggest issue with this series is all the options.

Should I fight to build a social link?

I've never figured a balance.

Fuse demons and then do social links that correspond to those demons, which in turn lets you fuse stronger demons. Don't do social links if you don't have a demon of the same Tarot. Eventually you'll get more demon slots and you can start making demons for the other Social Links and then do them.

I thought it was fine. I watched a LP for vanilla P4 and thought that tease at the end without a resolution was lame. the True Ending epilogue made the ending in Golden pitch perfect.

Personally, I think the True Ending in Golden makes the entire thing less poignant as well. Even seeing the visit after just a few months takes away from the finality of it all. Leave that stuff open for interpretation.

And what was the tease at the end?

Play Xenoblade Chronicles, or Steins;Gate. They have similar character-plot interactions.

Already have Steins;Gate. Striving to the to the good ending! But it's really different though, since you don't really choose...almost anything :P

Anyway, too many people recommending Non-VITA games! lol

Lost Dimension (Vita), I guess, that has a relationship system also which has an effect on the gameplay battles too. In that you're trying to root out traitors, rather than just growing close to people. It's pretty similar to something that Atlus would make I think (former members of Atlus worked on it), but nothing much like Persona, more like a SMT spin off with a completely different battle system. It's a really good game though.

EDIT: Also Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time (PSP/Vita) is developed by Atlus, it's a hybrid SRPG with relationship system with various characters. Amazing game, one of my favourite on the PSP, actually. Far better than Trails in the Sky, imo (the battle system seals it).

I'm still debating whether to get this for £12 in the sale. I've played through the first few hours of the PS2 version and love the story and chatting to people but those God awful dungeon sections really put me off. Someone convince me to go for it.

Play on Very Easy and it's a cake walk. Assuming you only care for the story, which it seems you do.

Oh, sorry didn't realize you only had a vita.

I'm sure it has been stated before, but Trails in the Sky is really good too. The PSP game Tactics Ogre is easily one of the best. Muramasa Rebirth, Daganropa, Ar nosurge, Gravity Rush, Demon Gaze, Disgaea 4, and Bastion are my personal favorites.

No, I agree. it also had a better soundtrack.

well P3P anyways.

P3P has better scenery music (Sun, Iwatodai Dorm), but P4G has better battle themes and dungeon music. Tartarus probably has the worst dungeon music of any RPG that I've played. Both are good soundtracks though.

shot.

2. I wouldn't play this expecting its strengths to be like P4's strengths. Danganronpa is essentially a big mystery played out in the context of a bunch of smaller mysteries that are cases you need to investigate and then debate with the other characters in courtroom type gameplay. But the social aspect is woefully undercooked and it's more a VN than an RPG.

There is a separate mode in each Danganronpa that is entirely just you building social links with each character.

Is that the School Mode or whatever? Yeah, I didn't end up doing that. Like you said, though, it's an entirely separate mode. Like Mercenaries in Resident Evil.

As for Marie, her social link wasn't all that great, but her dungeon and backstory were a nice surprise. Her hat is dumb, though.

I know how you feel OP. I truly do. :(

Sadly, there aren't many like it at all. Persona 4 is one of a kind.

Danganronpa 1 and 2 are decent substitutes tho. :P

There are exactly three games that made me feel empty inside upon completion in recent memory.

Persona 4
Danganronpa
Danganronpa 2

Play Danganronpa.

2) The game isn't really a RPG right? More like an Ace Attorney kind of game? What about it's storyline, is it captivating?

It's a fast-paced murder mystery that absolutely oozes style just like Persona 4 does. It also deals with some of the growing pains of being a teenager just like P4 does, with some characters directly comparable.

However, the tone is also very different. This is NOT an optimistic game like P4 is. When a character in P4 accepts themself, they get a Persona and more confidence/the means to change/an optimistic outlook for the future/etc. When a character in Danganronpa accepts themself... well, let's just say whoever your favorite character is, he/she will probably die horribly.

Gameplay-wise, it's a visual novel with investigation segments, something similar to social-link building, and trials like Ace Attorney, but with an amalgam of mini-games rather than just pointing to evidence.

At the risk of this having been asked already...can one get into Trails of Cold Steel without having gone through Trails in the Sky FC & SC?

Yes. It's recommended, if you've played FC to play SC before Cold Steel, but Cold Steel to FC is fine. They take place in different countries, although there are nods to previous games in Cold Steel and foreshadowing for Cold Steel in TITS.

Playing through this myself. Played the original, and I'm loving the additions. Marie is tsundere, but it only seems to be when
you find her poems
or talk to her and don't agree to hang out. She's okay with me. Didn't know Teddie's VA was different, but yeah Chie's new VA is awful. That high pitched squeaky voice is hard to listen to. And why doesn't Yu
get tag teams with anyone? He's the dude strengthening bonds and he gets no tag team :(
And I have to say the beach scene was hilarious.

I think P5 will have a breeze of a time being as good of a game as P4/3, overall. Mechanically, it will be better. I love the thief/Lupin vibe they're going for...I actually was hoping they'd do something that like and then they did. My only concern is the cast. They'll be cool, but Kanji and Nanako are some of my favorite JRPG characters ever. They'll be hard to top.

One of Troy Baker's best performances. Some of the way he delivers the lines cracked me up so hard.

Kanji was voiced by Baker? Holy shit lol, this guy's fucking EVERYWHERE.

P5 looks like it'll really be something special. I'm not worried at all, the presentation itself is refreshingly aamzing enough to me (and the dungeons will likely be faaaaaaaaar better made as well)

OP

Try and secure a copy of Persona 4 The Animation, and also Persona 4 The Golden Animation.

I too felt a wee bit hollow after completing P4G and watching these was quite a blast.

Persona 4 actually turned me off of video games for almost 2 years. I pretty much only play RPGs and everything I played immediately afterwards was just meh. Eventually I got over it, but to this day nothing really has come close. I'm really hoping Persona 5 is amazing.

Damn, the last boss is HARD!

Edit: Ok, so I just finished watching the True Ending...

Holy shot, can anything top this? P3 was amazing, but this game is God-tier!

If P5 comes out better than P4G...damn!

Well done guys. I downloaded P4G last night. Now I need to decide whether to play on Very Easy or Easy. Can the difficulty be changed mid-game? I worry that it will feel like less of a game on Very Easy.

Only in New Game Plus (which also adds custom difficulty options so you can, say, make battles more difficult but make EXP and money drop in loads).

You can't change difficulty midgame, but I found Normal to be pretty much perfect- Only a few instances of grinding and bosses are difficult enough to be engaging. Except for fusing one or two good Personas when I was stuck, I didn't consult a guide at all. I honestly doubt anyone would pick Very Easy for a reason besides caring only for the story (and even then again that's enough justification for me to make the battles difficult enough for them to have meaning but whatever).

Now, to enter despair! (I got Danganronpa :P)

Upupupupupu!

P4G is actually pretty compared to vanilla. I recommend playing on Normal!

The best thing about P4G for me were the characters, their interactions, and all the slower moments such as the holidays. If it's the same for you OP then the Trails in the Sky series is definitely worth checking out. Between the two games it should last you 90-100 hours.

Right now I've got Danganronpa to beat! Always felt curious with this one!

With so many people recommending Trails in the Sky I might take the plunge after beating Danganronpa!

Why is everyone trying to sell me on this series, I have a huge backlog already :c

You couldn't beat the boss yourself? I never thought it was hard but then again I was playing on normal.

after playing Catherine I think the team are still capable of delivering a great and mysteries story.

On the Trails front, although TiTS has its charms, Cold Steel would be a better match for Persona. TiTS (at least first chapter) feels more like Lunar or something. Cold Steel reminds me of a mix of Suikoden and Persona.

If that's your main concern, go for it. You can knock the dungeons out in a single in-game "day" and there is ton of plot and filler in between them. Hell, put the battle system on easy, even. The vast majority of the game is outside of the dungeons. They are indeed bullshit though.

If I play on Normal, I'll be making the same mistake I made with P4 and give up on the dungeons. I won't know if I made the right difficulty choice until 5 hours into the game. If I make the wrong choice, I'd have to decide whether to replay the first 5 hours again on a different difficulty (no way I'm doing that) or proceed for another 50+ hours trying to complete the game on an unsuitable difficulty and not having much fun.

Thanks for your advice!

I think the game is finally clicking for me now. Am an old school JPRG fan and understanding the conceit of Persona games always vexed me.

I've bought it now. There was one boss in one of the dungeons that I just couldn't beat on Normal in P4. It just knocked everyone's energy right down so I wasted all my turns on healing items until I eventually died. I tried twice and the same thing happened both times. I never played again after that.

Still very enjoyable on lower difficulty settings, the dungeons are only a part of the game. The characters, story and life aspects are where thisgame shines. So just pick the one you're comfortable with.

lol yes I beat the boss! It was easier that what I first thought!
