Hmm.. I need to do some research later. I've been curious about how homosexuality and even gender identity was taken in the Roman Empire throughout its life.

Marriage prohibition in the Roman Army would have been unworkable before it was reformed into a profession fighting force (under Gaius Marius I believe), because almost all of the soldiers were farmers and private citizens.

Also, for at least part of the history of the Republic and Empire, being singularly focused on women was mocked as effeminacy. Gay sex was seen as rugged and manly, provided you were the "active" (penetrative) partner. The partner to be penetrated was almost always lower-class and regarded as lesser. Nobility being penetrated was unseemly.

I wouldn't automatically say so. I think it's a limitation of that person's understanding of sexual identity and sexual preference.

However, since most people conflate the two, you get this situation.

Yet, if there were some negative sentiments (value judgement) attached to the label, then, yes, it would be homophobic.
