Kay Plays |OT|

I was actually just about to post, I've been sticking with it and it's getting better! I skipped forward a fair few but I'm on episode 30, she's on her game now.

She only just realised that she can use firebombs on the boarded up door in the undead burg, she spent ages trying to light her club on fire and stuff! I was shouting at the screen as she was scrolling past them. She seems like a smart cookie, I'm surprised it took her so long to click on, haha.

I'll definitely keep watching now, it was just a slow start.

I've been through the undead burg probably a thousand times, lol... I can't picture what you're referring to.

When Kay went to lower Undead Burg, she thought a particular piece of set dressing that looks like a boarded up portal could be lit on fire somehow. She spent quite a while trying different things. This was before she fully understood the possible mechanics of Dark Souls.

Man, it's so nice to see someone so totally blind. Like, she assumed she'd be able to just attack the Colossus at first, and while I never played the game I already knew you should climb them just through popculture osmosis, and the stuff with the beam.

Yeah, I just watched the video where she finally got back there but the firebomb didn't work!

Is there actually a way to get through there?

What do you mean by "the mechanics of dark Souls"?

This is a tough one to watch..."dealing" with the Colossi is something I have a great deal of trouble viewing :( Had a bad enough time of it whilst playing the game myself. I forgot how amazing the feeling of running across that open plain on your horse was...jesus.

I think she's being over-dramatic about her lack of skills.
SotC it's not a very conventional game, let alone platformer, and it's normal to have some time needed to adjust to its quirks, including the very cinematic camera.

I posted some advices in the comments, but i wonder, since she's usually more far ahead than the latest video, if she has already figured that stuff out.

She said in the comments she did these videos a while ago and I don't believe she has asked for no spoilers, my guess is she has finished the game.

I don't think she is doing too bad (as bad as she thinks). The first time I played SotC, I got up the the second Colossi, and had no idea what to do so stopped playing for a while. She beat me on that part anyway.

Also, SotC was the only game to ever give me a HUGE headache after every 15+ minutes I had with the game - so I have a weird experience with that game anyway. Never fully enjoed the game until the PS3 Remaster - no headaches at all there!

Never did figure out what was happening to trigger headaches in the original.

She mentioned "no spoilers" in the second episode.

Ps2 version had dogshit framerate, so that's probably why.

The camera seems to be the main issue right now. She's babysitting it too much, treating it like the kind of traditional stiff free camera in the Souls games. The SoTC camera, despite also being a free camera system, is actually easier to use with only slight adjustments (unless it ends up in a really bad angle) because it's designed to look where the devs wanted it to, and frame the things around you in a very specific way. It's better to approach the game thinking "landscape photography" or "widescreen framing" and try to get a feel for when the game wants Wander and Agro offset so the Colossus and/or environment becomes the focus of the scene. Like when she was crossing the landbridge in the most recent vid- you don't have to touch the right stick at all.

I really, really don't wish to raise any controversy, but the first thing that struck me, and stuck with me, as I watched the entire Dark Soul's episode where she figures out the Anor Londo deal, was that her voice sounds processed. Those who's watched Extra Credits might relate. I really notice it on short things she says. If this was somehow manipulated like it is in Extra Credits, you'd have to bunch together samples to make the frequency higher. This means you have to repeat some of the samples to not create gaps in the audio. The length of the repeats would be short, and that creates the sort of raspy thing on short things she says like "hm." or "well".

The first thing she says here, 'hat of the rogue witch' has exactly that quality of being voice-shifted. This really is just the first example I found. I hear it all over.

I've been contemplating if I should raise that point, since I really adored the Anor Londo video. I don't want to raise any controversy, but I really can't shake the feeling.

You sound like a crazy person.

It's an audio artifact.

Flimsy evidence at best. Even if true, why would it be a big deal? Do people freak out over processed voices?

Just so you don't think you're crazy, I heard pitch shifting artifacting too as soon as I opened one of the videos.

In some of her early videos - even up to her Demon Souls run - she said was fighting against sounds in her apartment. Her mic was picking all kinds of background noise, and she as a result she had to run various after effects to make things sound right. Maybe that is what you are hearing?

She changed the mic setup at some point - I think before the DLC eps started. Maybe that clears up your issues?

i hear what you're hearing and it does sound like processing, or an artifact from compression/streaming. as a male, i've pitched my voice down slightly in the past on podcasts and video reviews i've done, just because i felt my voice was a little high. could be a preference thing. could just be her mic being odd or the stream compression messing with the audio a bit.

Was the text always translated? Why do I feel as though when I played through it I wasnt told where to go?

The text was always there, you might not remember certain prompts because the hints were on a timer, so if you figured out what to do before hand you wouldn't see them. What I don't know is if they tweaked the timing on how long before the hints pop up.

Thinking about it, I find this line of discussion kinda hilarious.

To me, she seems like one of the very few genuine people uploading gaming videos to Youtube. 95% of people out there are either totally unlikeable, sound like overcaffeinated DJs, or are desperate for attention, fame, and money. I have a short fuse for all such people, which is why I watch so little Twitch/Youtube content.

Jeff Green and Kay are really the only two people I enjoy viewing - which is crazy as they are almost polar opposites of each other.

I have to admit that SoTC is still on my backlog. Probably shouldn't watch this LP, right?

Well fighting the colossi is like a big puzzle boss fight in a way. Half the fun is figuring out how to scale them so watching it would ruin that as u would know how to beat all of them. No dont watch it.

Honestly, I specifically stayed away from any conjuncture in my post, for this very reason. I'm just saying I hear it. It's something that's really striking.

I checked out her latest SoTC video, and it's exactly the same.

It could totally be a preference-thing, yeah. I'm really not one for trying to say anything about it, it just really struck me. I'm a hobby studio engineer, and my education in IT focused a lot on sound and compression. I can't think of any way this can come from compression, neither in size, nor in dynamics. I know all studio effects, and this is not the change of the formant, but rather the pitch.

But I honestly don't want to conjunct about it at all. It's just good to hear it's not just me that's hearing it. Your input on how you've used it also gives a sound reason for why this might be present, so thanks for that. It might absolutely be a preference-thing.

I totally agree, and I even said it in my post. She's a fantastic player, and I'm not about to draw any conclusions from it. It's just odd, and it really stuck out to me. She can do it all she wants, because her content's really amazing. I really just wanted to get it off my chest, since it was so blatant. I'm honestly not trying to say anything off of this, I'm just wondering why that'd be there, and as I said above, there might well be logical reasons for it.

Can't wait to see how long it takes for her to figure out some of the harder ones

I remember my first time playing it took me like 2 hours to figure out 15 haha

Her voice definitely sounded really different to me at the start of the Dark Souls LP after watching the Demon's Souls one too, deeper for sure.

I don't know about any sound alterations or whatever, but she had a very light, gentle, high pitched tone in the Demon's Souls videos, straight away I thought she sounded deeper watching the Dark Souls videos.

It's got back to around the same pitch now though, I'm on episode 40. It's wierd!

Female, male, robot, alien, my deceased dog...I really don't care who's voicing these video's. All I know is that I'm enjoying them a lot.

Kay seems to knows how to play a game, but yet seems very down to earth and likeable as well. It's a rare combination on youtube.

I'm loving the commentary, a lot.

Haah thanks Chilly, I wondered why you made the Kay comment in my SOTC LTTP thread, it seemed to come out of the blue so I checked back tot his thread as I had it bookmarked.......It is cool that I am ahead of her so that I can watch her vids as they come up. I doubt I will get done before Bloodborne as I planned though...maybe.

If anyone wants to see how we compare you can find my thread here.

This episode was pretty epic. I never knew how panic inducing it could be to watch someone play the game. Colossi battling should be a sport, it is the most exciting thing to watch ever.

I do hope Kay notices the charge attack. I do not think the game ever tells you directly - which is a pity. It will help keep her sanity in later fights!!!

Seriously, this might be the most amazing game ever made, both artistically and technically. I know exactly how each of those fights plays out and it's still absolutely exhilarating to even watch someone else climb those huge dudes.

I hope Kay is going to play Ico next(-ish), since the story(!) and exploration are the things she's enjoying the most about this game. I usually wouldn't recommend playing these games in that order, but it seems like she's going to get more out of them this way (which is neat!).

Somehow never watched these episodes of Demons from her. Amazing how these are still going on what, 5 years after it came out? Good stuff.

May watch these today at home leading up to 11:00pm. Could be fun since Sony has no intention of letting me play Demons.

She is having a lot of trouble with some mechanics that you could tell were making her frustrated, like the charge attack (each gliph can be takendown with 2~3 full charged attacks), crouching on flat surfaces to recover stamina and not be knocked off, the "leaping climbing", instead of just "regular climbing", she is still strugging with the jumping backward (probably releasing the hold button before releasing the jump one) and so on.

Seing her play this is making me want to replay this masterpiece so bad it isn't even funny.

I've been following her for a long time as well, really enjoy her thoughtful playthroughs. Has she made any mention of moving on to Bloodborne after she finishes Shadow of the Colossus?

Not so soon, since the disk tray on her PS4 broke, and she sent it to fix it. So, right now, she's PS4less

I really don't remember it being that tough to get a charged stab off on these guys.

Did they change something for the PS3 HD remaster?
The PS3 version is a remaster from the EU version of the game that had a slight difference in the physics of the game, so the grip were a little "off" comparing with the US version.

I believe they purposely made the Collosi a bit more aggressive to dislodge players on PS3, but it is not a big change. The issue here, I believe, is some of the mechanics are not spelled out, so she has no chance to learn them.

I am guessing she will find out everything at some point, but the fact she has a long history with Souls game is making it hard for her. 100+ hours of one system before moving onto something with a vastly different mechanic is hard to do - especially for totally blind playthroughs.

Hell no wait until after you do it blind...this is one of the best games ever to do completely blind..so many little secrets and no instructions makes it a treasure trove of exploration and using yor own strats. I would rather spend 3 hours on one colossus rather than look at a wiki, just because I know that if I just figure out a new strat or trick, it will eventually come together...it always does...
