Kay Plays |OT|

Last DLC incoming! Not long now until she's finished.

Guess I'll be the first one to recommend Lords of the Fallen as the next game. Similarly slow, methodical combat and obviously takes quite a few cues from the Souls series. Not as sprawling and varied of a game, with less challenge and less "hidden" lore... but still similar enough to warrant a look, I think. :)

I enjoyed it, at least.

Kay should play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night next. Tons of secrets to figure out, vague (badly translated) lore to piece together, and an awesome game.

I was very concerned she was going to beat fume knight one one go when she got him to his second form on first attempt. Was glad to see she is in fact human, I had a ton of trouble on that boss too.

In terms of playing something new before bloodborne, it's not necessarily very souls-y but I think Shadow of the Clossus is a game she would really like. Minimalist but good story, beautiful world and amazing boss fights.

why or how is it different?

Just the window is much narrower and, especially, instead of having an instant riposte, first you gotta let the enemy fall on their asses and then riposte from there.
I also don't like taking damage during riposte/backstabbing animations, since you can't cancel them.

I guess it's more of a personal preference, but there you go.

Actually I just looked it up and the number of active parry frames is generally larger in 2. Eg: for small shields it's 8 in 1 vs 11 in 2. I agree though that the lack of insta-repostes was a big nerf

Kay's Emerald Herald impression :3
It was bad, but please keep doing it - it gave me the giggles!

I continue to be impressed by Kay's parrying ability in DS2, I just can't get the hang of it at all so I just give up. Parry everything in DS1 and DeS but it's so off in DS2 from how it was before. I think half of it are the weird slow combos a lot of the enemies do. I guess that is what they wanted though, to make parrying more difficult for fans of the series. The enemes in the DLCs hit hard too making mistakes costly, kudos Kay.

The main difference, from what I can tell, with specifically the parry isn't so much that the window size has changed but that in Dark Souls II, the active parry frames arrive much later in the animation compared to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. It makes the system more prediction- than reaction-based and, in my opinion, less fun and reliable.

And then everything about the ripostes is terrible.

I didn't even know there was a special "quick riposte" animation in the game until I saw Kay do one in one of the videos.

That must be it then.
I played DkS1 again after the Steamworks transfer, and parrying felt so good, i was nailing them pretty consistently, whereas in DkS2 it always feels like a crapshoot.
To the point where i'm better off just rolling through the attack and killing them normally.

I agree completely.

Not sure if anyone still follows this thread (Come to think of it, I'm also not sure why the Demon's Souls thread is the active one, rather than the Dark Souls 2 thread!), but wanted to let you guys know that the Minecraft server I've been playing on for the past few months is starting a new map on Sunday, Jan 25th, 8pm EST, and they're looking to add a bunch of new players.

So if any of you are looking to get your craft on, consider stopping by the Reddit thread below and saying hello. We'd love to have you if you're not a serial murderer or the like.

If you're wondering where the next Dark Souls II DLC episode is, it's ... well, it's in pieces. It's several hours of me absolutely raging in the Frigid Outskirts. Definitely my least favorite zone in the entire series, and nearly bad enough to make me ragequit for good. :o No bonfire? Seemingly endless enemies? No way (that I've found, and I've tried a lot of things) to stop or see through the snow? Totally cheaty pony charge move that I SWEAR TO GODS I rolled in time? Standing still for ages after every fight to figure out where the hell I am? Oh, and don't even get me started on the bosses. :[ So much hate. It curls within me.

Anyway, the problem is there's some pretty major video lag in the first half of the recordings, so we're trying to salvage what we can.

So yeah, if you want to play some Minecraft with me and some truly warm and welcoming people, drop on in! Here's the link.

This thread is the active one because it was more recent, no one bumped the Dark Souls II thread like they should have.

I wondered if you would hit a wall with that DLC, I haven't played it, but by reputation it seems to combine everything bad about Dark Souls II and magnify it. Although by the last posted episode I could have sworn you were mostly finished with the zone already.

We'd love to have you if you're not a serial murderer or the like.
Weeeell, would you look at that fancy pants, gated community!
-
On a serious note, i personally never played Minecraft, but if you'll do videos about it, i'll gladly watch them.

As for Dark Souls 2, i was wondering when ep.29 was going up.
That area is understandably draining, the only area of the DLCs where i just summoned the NPCs to get it over with.
You can b-line for the boss once you memorize the way, using the NPCs summons as bait for the reindeers, and then send them back home once you're in front of the fog gate.

As frustrating as that area can be, i have to say i still enjoyed it in an experimental sort of way.

Personally i think the 3 DLCs (bosses aside, they weren't that interesting to me) are better than the whole base game, exactly because more creative and stylistically cohesive.
Especially with the invasions, they did very interesting things.

That area is definately the lowest ebb in the series, which is a shame because the level design of the rest of the DLC areas is some of the better in DS2.

EP 29

It’s the weakest zone of the game. But I thought the boss was alright and it would have been fun to see you beat it.

Anyway, it seems the reason you don’t want to finish the zone is because of having to wait for the blizzard to subside. So here are some tips that allow you to not have to wait for the blizzard:

You can get to the cliff where you need to go by following one of the walls. Run up to the correct wall and just follow the wall and you will get to the cliff. Since you are just running along a wall you don’t really have to see where you are going anyway.

Even faster method: follow the sun! You will see a light in one of the directions, which is where the sun is. Go in the direction of the light until you arrive at the wall, and then just go left alongside the wall until you get to the cliff. You will be able to see the light regardless of whether the blizzard is active or not and you can follow the wall at the end regardless of whether the blizzard is active or not.

I did the area completely solo, but you can use the NPC summons as bait if you don’t want to fight the horses. Then dispel them before you go through the boss fog.

A note on the horses: In contrast to every other enemy in the game, they don’t spawn at fixed locations. As long as you are within a spawn zone they will just keep spawning randomly. So you can’t, and shouldn’t, wait to kill all of them before proceeding, because you’d have to wait for a very long time. Just run past them all or kill the ones that spawn as quickly as possible before continuing to follow the light. Also, in each spawn area, there are only so many horses that will spawn ever. What I’m trying to say is that if you stay put (you may have to move around a little to actually get them to spawn) in one area and kill all the horses that come at you, you will eventually make the horses stop spawning forever. This means that you can think of every horse killed as some kind of progress. This also means that, in theory, you can stock up on lifegems and just go to town despawning all the horses in one single run. Because of my OCD, I wanted to explore the entire area by myself and map it out in my head and, in doing so, I managed to despawn every horse in the level before actually trying to get to the boss. So when I actually started dealing with the boss, I didn’t have to worry about the horses.

Don't blame you at all Kay for being done with that area. You saw everything it had to offer, there's nothing there except frustration and a cut-n-paste boss.

All 3 DLCs had these optional cut-n-paste recycled bosses with long frustrating gauntlets to get there, it's a cheap design decision imo and not something I'd like to see again in Souls.

Caught up with Ep.29.

I don't think i've ever heard her this annoyed with the game, damn.
Make sense to drop the area if it was that aggravating for her.
Personally i didn't have as much problems with it, simply because i didn't seem to have as many problems orientating myself in the blizzard, but it's definitely a subjective thing (for example i can't fathom how she's able to remember all the names and little details so well).

I think they should've just put a bonfire somewhere near the bridge or make those reindeer less annoying.
Removing the blizzard would've made the area completely pointless, as it's meant to be disorienting.

A cool idea would've been to only aggro the reindeer, if you move while the blizzard is down.
Sort of an impromptu stealth segment, where you need to visualize and memorize the area while the blizzard dies down, but you can only move while the blizzard is up.
That way you'd still have all the elements in place, but it would become an interesting area, and far less annoying.

Proof that she is at least a mere mortal! I did not play the DLCs, and from what I've seen don't feel I missed out all that much.

You did, the three DLC are the best part of DkS2, to me, the three combined beat out the whole of the base game, basically.
The Bosses are somewhat cheap, but the levels are much more creative (game design-wise) and stylistically consistent than the whole base game is.

Frigid Outskirts in particular can be annoying though (like all the gauntlets before the optional multiplayer bosses, in the DLC).

Good points but I will add that 60 FPS is imperative if you are having difficulty parrying...the visual cues are so much easier to benchmark.

Zelda!!

Just realized how hilarious it would be for Kay to do Simon's Quest haha. But now after Zelda, I think I'd die from joy if she ever plays Super Metroid.

No love for the Zelda videos? They are awesome. She is making terrific progress, too. I see a lot of people saying that Zelda 1 is impenetrable by modern audiences but she is making great time in the game so far and hasn't missed very many secrets to this point.

Kay is just an amazing player. Not surprised she is plowing through it. But man...I knew she'd hit a wall at Level 6, lol. Hate that place so much! She makes me want to replay LoZ on my 3DS. I hope she does the 2nd quest too.

Woah, I wasn't aware Kay had an official thread here, neither that she posted here as well.

She's the only YT let's player worth watching!

Also I agree that the Metroid Prime trilogy would be a perfect treat for her exploratory way of playing.

That's what I did. I hadn't been watching Kay play stuff since she started Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2 DLC since I haven't played those yet. But I saw her playing Zelda and remembered I got it with coins at some point, so I played through it again before I watched her videos. Doing that renewed my appreciation for the game.

Would definitely watch her go through Prime, but Super Metroid in particular would be interesting for me. Would love to see someone play that who's fresh to the game and knows how to use their brain.
That'd be you, Kay.

I've been watching this the last few days and I'm enjoying it in the main. I never finished it so I'm enjoying watching someone who knows their stuff playing through it. Some comments:

- She has a lovely soothing voice that makes these excellent videos to chill with on an evening

- I appreciate her meticulous attention to detail

- She's seems to be fairly decent at combat with a good handle on parrying

BUT

- She often has me shouting at the screen to check for enemies properly before admiring the scenery or opening her inventory

- Her meticulous nature sometimes irritates when she's pouring over every scrap of lore and such (obviously this is subjective)

- She makes some daft decisions

- She dawdles sometimes

When all is said and done, she's definitely one of the better LPers I've watched, I'll be checking out her other series when I'm done with this.

Thanks for the heads up OP!

Thanks Kay, you're the hero of Hyrule.

This kinda makes me want to see her playing The binding of isaac rebirth
On the plus side, it'd be insanely fun to have her analytical mind try to memorise the hundreds of items (as well as try to make sense of the endings). On the other hand, the content doesn't really seem to be her style.

I'm still throwing my lot in for Lords of the Fallen. A solid, shorter Souls-like.

I'd be saying Shenmue if there was an easily available HD version on Steam.

Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Shadow of the Colossus, Metroid Prime are all great suggestions as well.

I will watch anything she do but I think I prefer when she is figuring things out and finding secrets rather than showing awesome combat skills.
Parrying the dragon slayer arrows in Anor Londo was really awesome though!

Because of that I think Grimrock 1 and 2 would be great. They have tons of secrets and puzzles.
Perhaps they are a bit too easy for her but I bet she will find secrets everyone else has to go the wiki for.
Since she does not mind to go retro I could also see her do the original Dungeon Master. One of the best games ever made and insanely advanced for its time.

Watching her solve the investigation missions in The Secret World would also be great but from what she have said earlier she might be scared to be totally consumed by an MMO again.

What other games filled with secrets worthy of her batman status are out there?

I played Atari ST and PC so I missed most of the early console generations, but I bet there are gems with super obscure puzzles and I would love to experience them through Kay. Any suggestions for those kind of games.
Come to think of it, I should probably play them myself.

Miss your cool streams Kay. I stopped watching after you beat Demon's.. Don't blame you for putting down Dark Souls 2.

My heart belongs only to Jeff Green, but I shall watch again. I'm just worried there aren't enough cool games out there for you to really enjoy. Most games just pander to the player.. Awful.

Yay she finally won! Loved her playthrough. Games where you have to figure stuff out are a perfect fit for her.

I finished her Demon's Souls LP today, I liked it a lot. It was really nice to just sit and watch someone play through it at my own pace, best LP I've seen.

I started her Dark Souls LP today, the first thing that struck me is how different her voice sounds! She sounds a lot deeper. Also, she seems pretty clueless about the basics of how to play games, not sure I'll stick with this one. Might skip straight to DS2.

DS1 was her first Souls game and Kay very quickly gets up to speed and is parrying enemies like nobodies business, so it's worth sticking with the DS1 run! :)
