Kiefer Sutherland Talks Metal Gear Solid V

Sn4ke_911

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
When I recently sat down with Kiefer Sutherland to discuss his return as Jack Bauer in 24: Live Another Day, I was also able to briefly speak to him about another notable action role he has coming up - playing Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Sutherland is both providing the voice and doing the motion capture for the role.

When I asked Sutherland about his experience working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, he replied, “Oh man, that's been a gig and a half! I've been working on that for over a year.”

“You know, I've got, like, 50 metal dots on my face, 50 cameras recording my every facial movement,” Sutherland said of the process of making the game. “The process and the technology and what I have to go through just to do a line, and what the engineers and technicians have to do, it's unbelievable. But then when I saw it… There was a guy who was applying the dots and was just in charge of that part, and he was making his own game; he's some technical wizard, and this game is supposed to be really cool. But they were showing us some stuff that they had just finished in Japan, and they were showing it back to us. It was this one little clip that’s final, final, final, and it's me on a horse. I'm riding the horse, and then I go from a run to a lope to a walk, and then standing still. I don't know a lot about games, so I'm watching it, and the guy who's watching it with me goes, ‘Oh my God. Your ears moved.’ Then he was looking at the throat, and he said, ‘You can see the pulse.’ I mean, it was so real, and all I kept thinking was, ‘This is how they're going to make movies soon.’ They're halfway there now, you know, but they're going to make films like this. This is not far off. “

Sutherland said, of Snake, “The character is one of the few things that they say is, "Lower!” He then affected just such a raspy voice, looking at me as he asked, in Snake style, "What are you gonna do?" Sutherland added, with a laugh, “I’m talking, and I start sounding like Tom Waits. But I've really enjoyed it, and they're really good people.”

And then after the interview, tackled a Christmas tree.

I'm getting a little tired of these actors who make such a huge deal about "white dots, tight suits and dozens of cameras everywhere". This isn't ten years ago.

Honestly I don't think Snake could have gone much further with David Hayter.

Crab Battle!

It took a little bit but I welcome a fresh actor in the role.

HOW DARE YOU!?

when are you guys gonna get it? It's kiefer fucking sutherland. David Hayter was not on the cover art for Metal Gear 1 or in the character portraits...American action stars were. Pretty sure kojima is creaming himself on a daily basis about this, which is gross, if you think about it. why did you think about it

MGS4 and PW were absolute worst performances by Hayter. He sounded bad, and not only because Old Snake plotline in MGS4. MGS1 Hayter is the best Hayter.

I'm open to Southerland, he can hardly be worse than Hayter was in last few games.

As much as I try to, Hayter's performance in Peace Walker makes me cringe. Some really terrible delivery in that game.

His regular Snake delivery is good, but whenever he tries to 'grit' it up it comes out horribly.

I have a suggestion for a new Solidus

Kiefer Snake kept us waiting. I think this is the first time he's talked about it after the initial reveal.

Real Snake > 24Snake

Sounds like most of it is about his one day in mo-cap. Still not buying it that he's playing Snake. Kojima said after MGS2 with the current way the world works, it's impossible for him to pull one over us but especially after this interview that has no specifics and last year's video of Sutherland looking like he was barely in the studio, I still think it's a hoax.

We'll see in two years! lol

His voice has been going for a while now, it seems like it's been harder and harder for him to use the "Snake" voice past MGS3.

Maybe that's a reason why he was replaced, quality just went down too much? It's hard to keep a consistent voice that you have to force for 15 years.

Does anyone still think that all of this is a giant masquarade concocted by Kojima and that when people put The Phantom Pain disc in their console and start playing, Snake will totally be voiced by David Hayter ?

Hayter's Snake became more like an imitation of Snake with each game that passed. Eventually it seemed like he was so focused on capturing the sound of the voice that he forgot how to actually act while doing it, so everything sounded forced and unnatural

Most probably Kojima wants to open a possibility of Big Boss and young Solid Snake meeting in TPP. That would open up possibility for Hayter to return.

That's the only logical reason I can think of. I'm honestly expecting another time skip during the TPP, and they might plan to do something with Solid Snake,
Big Boss recruiting him in the 90s or something like that because that would be full circle and I can't see why they wouldn't want to do that.

Then he would have changed the Japanese VA as well. It's really not a big deal, they got a chance to hire a Hollywood-tier actor and protagonist of a TV show that is both similar in theme to Metal Gear and pretty popular worldwide and they jumped on it. Will he ditch Konami after a couple of games at best? Most likely, but that's life.

Kojima has always wanted to make movies. He's a lover of film more than video games, and I think with motion capture tech he's getting closer to his dreams of being a big feature director. He's also a lover of particularly cheesy/pulpy/not great films, so when the chance came to grab a B-lister like Kiefer... well, he was in heaven.

That's my theory anyway. Nothing to do with Hayter, Just Kojima trying to fulfill his dream of being a movie director in a game.

I dont think so, timeskip between TPP and MG1 is 11 years [1984-1995]. Solid Snake become part of Foxhound after he was deployed in Gulf War [1991].

If BB and Solid Snake meet in TPP, SS will be a kid, just as Liquid. No timeskips.

Kojima talked how Kiefer ended up as being the lead. Ari Arad pushed for it, and put them in contact.

I know, I'm saying there could be another time skip.

I still like the theory that scarred up snake=keifer and no scar snake=Hayter. Plastic surgery imposter.

That would be clever.

Honestly though I think Sutherland will be fine.

This speech almost made me cry, for the wrong reasons.

I imagine Kiefer could do a far better job with the role of Big Boss. Hayter's voice is a good fit for Solid Snake, particularly in MGS1, when he speaks laconically. It works for Solid Snake, a man of few words, but sentences of philosophy sound ridiculous coming from Hayter's growl. His last decent performance was in Brawl.

I'm not saying Hayter isn't somewhat to blame over his performance in 4 and PW, but does no one think that the voice direction partially pushed him to that? "No, no, MUCH raspier! Peace Walker era Big Boss is all torn up by war now!"

MGS4 Snake was completely unlike MGS1 or 2 Snake, and was probably very hard to do. How do you take Snake's voice and turn it into an old Snake voice without doing what Hayter did?

That all being said, I'm curious if Kiefer can pull it off. The only thing I don't like about Kiefer is that he has no idea about the history of the games and how important/nostalgic lines like, "Kept you waiting, huh?" and "A surveillance camera!?" are to the fans.

Good. Even if his acting ends up bad, at least he seems genuinely excited about the project. I'm fine with Hollywood actors as long as they respect the medium which Sutherland seems to be doing.

Wasn't Raiden a child soldier in the 80s? That would make him not much younger than Solid Snake.
