Kiefer Sutherland Talks Metal Gear Solid V

I still can't believe Kojima decided this was a good idea. I'm far from a rabid MGS fan, and even I find the voice change really weird.

I'm not saying Hayter isn't somewhat to blame over his performance in 4 and PW, but does no one think that the voice direction partially pushed him to that? "No, no, MUCH raspier! Peace Walker era Big Boss is all torn up by war now!"

It was the voice direction. You can see an example on the making of MGS 4 Blu-ray.

Wasn't Raiden a child soldier in the 80s? That would make him not much younger than Solid Snake.

First Liberian Civil War was 1989-1996, TPP is 1984. But we saw briefly that game will have focus on Africa and child soldiers who are already trained for combat.

If my theory of Ishmael being Solidus comes true, then we will possibly see young Raiden being recruited by Solidus.

He was a child soldier in the Liberian Civil War (1989-1996) which would put his birthday in the early/mid-80s.. Solid is 1972 (according to wiki, this sort of thing could be retconned easily enough). Solid would be 10 or so years older than Raiden, although Solid has advanced aging while Raiden's aging is presumably slowed by cyborg tech.

Interesting interview. It's unfortunate that Sutherland can't appreciate the character Snake and the whole franchise, the way Hayter did. Hayter is Snake to me and Kiefer just a paid actor who is supposed to act and speak like Snake did before. The voice actor is the most important person in order to represent a character in video games, imo. They can make or break a character and changing them is like killing off and replacing that character. Changing them for the wrong reasons is even worse...
I hope Kojima can achieve his new vision of MGS. Hopefully it's better than his weird Moby Dick "trolling" or whatever this was supposed to be.

Kiefer is the reason MGS V will be the first MGS I buy. I'm hoping that Snake shouts either
DAMMIT
or
SONUVABITCH
in the game. That would be streets ahead.

Still my main problem with GZ even more so than length.
I would consider the PS3 digital version for $20 if it still had Hayter.

At least 2 other series vets could have done this role and yet Kojima sells out to get Kiefer to phone it in.

This speech almost made me cry, for the wrong reasons.

I imagine Kiefer could do a far better job with the role of Big Boss. Hayter's voice is a good fit for Solid Snake, particularly in MGS1, when he speaks laconically. It works for Solid Snake, a man of few words, but sentences of philosophy sound ridiculous coming from Hayter's growl. His last decent performance was in Brawl.

Man, I forgot how HORRIBLE he was in Peace Walker. Jesus, that was horrendous.

Kiefer is one of the sole bright spots to come out of this MGS V mess Konami has cooked up

Although I was a little vexed at Hayter's removal, I can't imagine a greater replacement than Sutherland. It's like the wildest fan casting idea made reality.

LOL

I'm fighting with myself on if I wanna know context or not on this.

I dont think so, timeskip between TPP and MG1 is 11 years [1984-1995]. Solid Snake become part of Foxhound after he was deployed in Gulf War [1991].

If BB and Solid Snake meet in TPP, SS will be a kid, just as Liquid. No timeskips.

Unless they're planning for yet another Big Boss prequel, then an epilogue/time jump would feel pretty appropriate in this case I think. It would be a great ending to either give us a glimpse of early Foxhound or Operation Intrude N313. I don't think Big Boss meeting Snake as a kid would have a real significance to it, really... I mean it would be a nice fanservice moment, but it's like Big Boss told him in MGS4 "I never really thought of you as a son, but I always respected you as a soldier and as a man." A father/son bonding moment with Snake as a child isn't really consistent with that, unless maybe it's the scene where he told him he was his father? I don't know.

But despite their genetic connection their real relationship was of a soldier and his commander, Snake didn't even confront Big Boss about being his father before he'd already killed him for betraying his unit, he had to learn he was a clone in the first Metal Gear Solid from Eli/Liquid (which is probably why he's a main character in the game, they can bring up the elephant in the room unlike David and have more freedom to explore his and Big Boss's relationship in a different way). By the end of this game I imagine "Snake" in his iconic form will be all but gone when it comes to Big Boss, so what better way to see Solid Snake again than for them to pull a reverse MGS4 ending and seeing Snake the young man's initiation as opposed to Big Boss meeting an unrecognizable kid that we're simply told will grow up to be Snake? I mean imagine seeing David receive his bandana/codename for the first time? That would be an amazing scene.

That's the kind of Solid Snake reveal I think would be really appropriate, it would gives us real hope and familiarity again and it would only be better if David Hayter came back and voiced him obviously.

I'm getting a little tired of these actors who make such a huge deal about "white dots, tight suits and dozens of cameras everywhere". This isn't ten years ago.

You wrote what I thought.

Why cant they do one scan of actor who is then free to go. They know hiw hunan body moves etc.

I like Sutherland

He only does the facial capture, so that's probably what's majorly new to him. You have to acclimatize to that many balls on your face.

While we know that Solid Snake will not find out the true indentity of Big Boss for a long time, that doesn't mean that we wont have some "father-son" tension with Liquid during TPP. I fully expect him becoming mad because he is "inferior clone" and that his "daddy" doesn't want him. :D

Sutherland is one of the things Im most hyped about when it comes to MGSV. Richard Doyle did a fantastic job so Kiefer has a lot to live up to.

Well if they really went full mocap for everything and there's that much detail then I can see why Hayter was replaced. I don't think he would have had the acting chops or little nuances to pull it off as well as Sutherland.

I'm actually looking forward to a change with Snake, he's been a bit dull and samey for a while now

That's what I meant when I said they can explore Liquid and Big Boss's relationship in a different way than Solid Snake. Obviously, the whole "clone" thing for Liquid was a big chip on his shoulder. Snake knew nothing about it and was simply told by Big Boss that he was his father, he never thought to question it and they had a more subdued and complex relationship, but that key difference gives them the liberty to do a lot more with Liquid/Big Boss if he's Eli and would explain why he's the major supporting cast character.

I don't understand why people are still crying over the lack of David Hayter.

He's never been a good Big Boss. And why use the same voice actor for Solid Snake as Big Boss? It is a stupid as using Otacon's voice actor for Ocelot.

Well for me I'd be okay with Big Boss's voice changing, I can understand why that would be logical to give Big Boss his own voice. The problem for me is that I don't think separating Big Boss and Solid Snake as characters is the reason Konami changed his voice! That's what gets to me. The way they discarded Hayter just doesn't seem right to me and neither do the reasons to cast Sutherland in his place at this point beyond starpower.

The first red flag for me was the fact Ground Zeroes was set only a year after Peace Walker and Akio Otsuka was still doing his voice in Japan, that implied that Big Boss's voice in the context of the story wasn't supposed to have undergone any change. The second was casting Christopher Randolph as Huey again in Ground Zeroes/the Phantom Pain, when he should only be Otacon's voice the same way David Hayter should only be Solid Snake by that logic. The third red flag was that pixelated Solid Snake in the Deja Vu mission is still not voiced by Hayter, but Sutherland. And the final red flag was when Christopher Randolph and Robin Atkin Downes both implied on twitter that they're doing the facial capture along with Sutherland... so those other voice actors can do it but Hayter isn't more than capable as well? I thought the technology required a hollywood actor?

And the character is still called "Snake" in both games and behaves like him, uses his famous catchphrases like "Kept ya waitin', huh?" in spite of Peace Walker's ending. It's very difficult for me, because it feels like Hayter should be there when he isn't based on everything i've seen! The completely understandable fan reasoning of wanting an actor to make the transition to Richard Doyle's Big Boss doesn't seem to have been a factor at all in this recast and I find that disappointing.
