This is fucking EVERYWHERE and I wish people would just explain what it is.

It seems that despite being a human rights issue that needs attention that I'm instead seeing an attempt by the Twitter/Facebook/GooglePlusverse to be somewhat elitist.

Granted, I also subscribe to the "if you're confused about something, then Google it" camp, but seeing KONY everywhere with nothing else is irritating to me.

What's the problem? That always works. We helped Afghan guerillas get rid of the Russians and the Russians stayed away! NOTH1NG bad happened from that.

Some people made a half hour documentary about Kony and what he's done to children/people, forcing children to become soldiers for his army and basically being a despicable evil tyrant and so on. The documentary went viral and now everyone is talking about it. The people who made it have said they did it because they want it to catch enough attention that the US might say something about it and make an attempt to go after him. Apparently at one point the US had interest in going after him but they didn't take it too seriously and instead sent a group of military people for intelligence purposes rather than a full on assault on lord's resistance army.

I've recently watched some other Uganda video though that said Kony has been out of Uganda since 2006 and that these acts aren't happening anymore (at least where it used to). I haven't seen the Kony documentary though I don't know if it addresses this or not. Or if Kony is still dangerous and not just Sadaam-hiding avoiding authorities. I don't know that's just the gist of it.
 
A lot of questions being raised about this IC organisation that made the video. I guess things are never that simple. I think their heart is in the right place, but it's a tangled political situation they're involved in.

Still, I think it's a worthwhile social experiment that could lead to perhaps an even better one. Even if only a few people decide to do something pro-active as a result of the awareness raised, that can't be a bad thing.
 
Seriously...WTF America. Thanks for giving a shit about this inhumane crap but lets focus on shit that affects the world. Cancer...AIDS. I don't give a fuck...just SOMETHING else..what is the point in this? I hate when they try and act like killing one person will solve so much shit. People are dumb..Kony 2012 is pissing me off.

If we could just take all the money they are making for this campaign and put it towards cancer research. I would be happy.

1. There's no reason to be either cancer OR Kony. You can do both.
2. The money going into this Kony thing wouldn't put 1% of a dent into Cancer research. Not that it wouldn't be welcomed but billions have already been 'spent' on Cancer/HIV stuff.
3. Why would you be against raising awareness for the US to potentially go after a horrible and murderous tyrant (and his army)? If it works then a good thing has happened, if it doesn't work it's not a loss. People donate at most 15-20 bucks. I don't know where the money is going but I doubt they would make a ponzi scheme out of such a public effort.

To be fair it's not like everyone can know everything about the world. If someone learns about this and didn't know about it before there's potential they'll want to do something about it. Most won't do anything about it besides update their fb status, but a few might. And if that's true then it's all good. Raising awareness towards injustice is always a good thing unless there's a for-profit motive in the background which seems to be the controversy in this case.
 
IC can claim they are only spreading awareness but when your organization supports MILITARY intervention and support a president and an army who have committed the same crimes even if its on the lesser scale than Kony, you don't become an awareness organization, you become a political organization

The problem is the timing if the campaign. If the Guy has been gone from Uganda already, this campaign is useless. You're getting people riled up for essentially nothing with the purpose of furthering your organization's name. You also have yo consider the fact that this campaign won't last. Campaigns like this nrvet last. People will forget and shrug it off in no time.

And this whole thing was targeted at Unhands... a small ass country in the middle of Africa. What about all of the other countries? To place such an importance on just one guy in one play and call it a day afterwards makes me go, "WTH?".

And of course all of the financial iffiness of it all. Now, tell me you're behind this 100%

My issue is that it becomes almost a frat-like, inside joke thing when I see people on Facebook only posting "KONY 2012". It makes it out to be something almost hip and "if you don't get it, you never will".

If it's truly a humatarian crisis, fucking explain what you're talking about to spread the word to those who might not watch the news or are fairly self-centered or refuse to use Google and instead just skim to the next Facebook update ("OH GIRL HE SO CUTE").

What pisses me off most about this is most of the people spamming this shit would bail on this Kony 2012 crap the second any real effort or action is involve. YAY I SPAMMED 20 YT VIDEOS AND PLASTERED IT ON TWITTER AND FB. I'M FIGHTING KONY! No you fucking aren't. And what the hell is the point of plastering shit all over cities for? No one is FOR Kony. You don't need to convince us he's a bad person but what the hell is spamming shit EVERYWHERE going to do? Do you want people to form militias and fly over there? The part about spamming cities and FB/twitter is to bring awareness to the problem not actually fight Kony. I had no idea who the fuck he was up until last night when I logged onto FB only to find the newsfeed was now Kony central. I must admit it certainly is motivating people to read up on who the hell this guy is.

for maybe...5%. for the other 95%, they're even more ignorant than ever. that's my problem with the video -- it's motivating them to listen to the extremely one sided view (which contains white god complex, guilt tripping,, celebrity worship, advocating military involvement, the whole nine yards) and yell at the top of their lungs to everyone else YOU HATE AFRICA.

You don't need to spam it everywhere to bring awareness. And this guy has been around for decades, in fact most footage they showed WAS nearly a decade old and apparently Kony has been pushed back and back for years deeper into the jungle. And this shit happens everywhere and for a very long time and yet so many of these people would just go "Idi Amin? Who? I don't care who that was! Kony would be much worse!"

The shitty thing is that people back this whole thing up with "at least it creates awareness", but awareness isn't necessarily good when it's misguided and misinformed

I watched the 30min video yesterday, it is really moving. I heard today though not to donate any money because that was a scam? I wouldnt anyways but I do think we should stop this guy. Stop Kony2012

It isn't educating at all. It's totally one sided and uninformative. There is also a point where over saturation can bring a negative effect. If this keeps up till April most people will stop caring and grow a negative feeling towards Kony 2012 because it's pissing them off.
