Kony 2012

People's reactions to this KONY thing are really insane. The internet is totally nuts. It's almost as if these Invisible guys were advocating for abducting children and forcing them to kill, instead of trying to help the situation. Suddenly they're being attacked and scrutinised in a way our corrupt leaders sadly never are, just because they used the internet effectively. Mad, mad world.

Hasn't Kony been doing this for over 20 years now? Interesting how people started to care now.

I concur. Since I'm not really into the social media thing I'm only hearing about Kony 2012 in the context of controversy (if it bleeds, it leads). I've known about the LRA and child soldiering throughout Africa for years though from Human Rights Watch and Amnesty Int'l.

At least all of this chatter has been about disbelieving the messenger and not the message.

It had the same impact to me *started a thread but it didn't really got picked up (sucky op)

I hardly get emotional via these kind of campains, but the video is so well set up and the message is so compelling I couldn't hold back tears. I already donated $25 and am trying to share it with as many people as I can via facebook.

*sigh* good job funding the Ugandan Military. The same Ugandan military that's keeping Kony in power to justify themselves keeping power. The same Ugandan military that butchers civilians.

Where does it say the donations go to the Ugandan military? Please provide a source.

It doesn't. They debunk this claim (and a whole bunch of others) on their website. They don't give the Ugandan military a cent. They're just forced to work with them, as well as the Ugandan government, in certain instances to get shit done over there.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Some people seem to insist on perpetuating bullshit.

Not sure what to think on this one.

On one side there seems to be a worthy cause if you go in blind and watch the video without any knowledge of the events going on. On the other you have tons of people acting elitist like they know everything and anything going on in the world and do nothing but act superior. Simply because they read a few articles that question Invisible Children's legitimacy.

Frankly I am sick of both sides. I don't know how many times I have seen that Gene Wilder pic now on my Facebook or the Kony video itself.

I was reading this morning that last year Invisible Children spent $8.6m but only 33% of that went directly to the cause itself...the rest was blown on travelling, viral marketing, film making etc etc...

How can Invisible Children be called a charity when they spend just over 30% of funding on the actual cause...

no, you know what is insane? people caring about an issue which is not even an issue in Uganda anymore since 2006.

so who do they give the money to? Oh the Local services which they didnt mention in their 30 minute video? Not a SINGLE ugandan local official/service person was shown/mentioned/talked to.

Talking out of your ass is not better than anything. IC has already helped many people. Whether or not there will be a long term benefit to Africa/Uganda as a whole is another matter entirely, but they aren't even trying to suddenly make all of Africa's problems go away, they're addressing one certain issue and doing a pretty good job at it. I don't see why people need to literally make shit up and try and piss on them for that.

Are you for real? No large registered charity ever donates 100% of its funds to its relative cause, as there are expenses; administration, accountancy, management, wages, fundraising, travel, equipment, so on and so forth. Just because it is a non-profit organization does not mean that it does not have costs to pay. It's a sad fact, but not one that should be ignored.

no...but..

OXFAM American Donates 90 cents for every dollar to direct services

Smile Train donated 78 cents for every dollar to Direct Services

Invisible Child donates 32 cents for every dollar, It gives 31 cents to its employees, 10 percent on filming and 30 cents on logistics.

The problem is now not even Invisible Hand anymore

its the fact that Ugandans themselves are saying WTF you guys doing? He is not even in Uganda since 6 years and no incident has occured in northern Uganda since 2006. The people in Kony's army are down to just 100-200. They attack rarely and only for food. So the question is..Why the uproar? Why now when his movement is already dying.

How is that a charity?

IC makes more use of filming and "logistics" than other charities in order to spread further awareness and for fundraising purposes. There you go.

If you had bothered watching the video, you'd know that they acknowledge the fact that he isn't in Uganda. They openly state it. You think it's fine to just let a lunatic run free just because he has less of an army and poses less of a threat? What about the times he does attack? Even so, he's a war criminal and must be brought to trial. You don't let a murderer go free just because they got away.

To spread awareness for what exactly?

So the question is..Why the uproar? Why now when his movement is already dying. He is irrelevant to Ugandans so why do YOU care? Why not let the people in Africa deal with threat which is dying anyway

To spread awareness for what exactly?

Of the cause. You do realize practically fucking nobody in the general public knew about Kony? Even though IC has been operating for years now, they have only just started to use social media extensively to spread awareness of Kony, and look at the explosion in awareness already. It will be interesting to see how much donations they get now with the increase.

Why are about him NOW that he is irrelevant? This would be ok when he was relevant in the 90s and 00s but he is not in Uganda anymore and has less than a 100 people left who attack for food. So if the Ugandans dont see him as THE singular threat, why should we MEDDLE like imperialists and colonists

IC is an independent organization and they realize that a war criminal is still at large. The International Criminal Court already has a case against him. Are you trying to say that he should be left to roam free and potentially build up his army again somewhere outside of Uganda?

Oh, you were serious... smh.

I won't pretend that I agree with everything IC does, however I do prefer facts over bullshit spouted for the sole purpose of attempting to damage their credibility. If the organization is so evil, you shouldn't need to make things up.

No I am saying that Africans themselves have been dealing with him and dealing well. He is not an issue for Uganda and his movement is dying off. What is up with the sudden uproar of selling $30 kits to stop Kony. The only reason this happened is because IC wanted to remain in the headlines and relevant because there were rumors Obama would pull the 100 troops out of Uganda because they were really not required any more.

I do agree that the U.S. troops are not needed in Uganda. However, whether you like it or not, the LRA is still a threat to innocent people outside of Uganda. http://www.lracrisistracker.com/

In regards to your criticisms of IC, please read this article. http://www.invisiblechildren.com.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/critiques.html

Dude, @planar1280 already explained it to you.

If some charity gives only 32 cents for every dollar. What kind of charity is that? Do you need any more facts than this one?
When you're donating less money than what you spend, then it is not charity. I won't say it is a scam, but surely it isn't far from one.

Raising awareness means a cash infusion is needed to save our jobs as NonProfit executives.

Yep.

its not whether I like it or its whether they are relevant to suddenly become the ISSUE number 1 in Africa. There are dozens of other people around the world which do things much worse, but I don't see arm chair activists up in arms over that.

The organization spent 80.46% on our programs that further our three-fold mission; 16.24% on administration and management costs; and 3.22% on direct fundraising in Fiscal Year 2011. Invisible Children is independently audited every year and in full compliance with our 501(c)3 nonprofit status.

The only issue with IC's financials is that they spent a lot on awareness. However, they appear to acknowledge this. And it should be noted that many charities spend everything on awareness and don't have any practical programs. I suppose they aren't charities?

Invisible Children's mission is to stop LRA violence and support the war-affected communities in East and Central Africa. These are the three ways we achieve this mission; each is essential:

1) Make the world aware of the LRA. This includes making documentary films and touring them around the world so that they are seen for free by millions of people.

2) Channel energy from viewers of IC films into large-scale advocacy campaigns to stop the LRA and protect civilians.

3) Operate programs on the ground in LRA-affected areas that provide protection, rehabilitation and development assistance.

As you will see, we spend roughly one third of our money on each of these three goals. This three-prong approach is what makes Invisible Children unique. Some organizations focus exclusively on documenting human rights abuses, some focus exclusively on international advocacy or awareness, and some focus exclusively on on-the-ground development. We do all three. At the same time. This comprehensive model is intentional and has proven to be very effective.

its not whether I like it or its whether they are relevant to suddenly become the ISSUE number 1 in Africa. There are dozens of other people around the world which do things much worse, but I don't see arm chair activists up in arms over that.

Nobody ever said it was issue number 1 in Africa (a clusterfuck by any means). Hyperbole won't help your criticism at all. Again, the attitude you're advocating is "fuck it, bigger fish to fry". You're ignoring the fact that it is an issue and IC feel strongly about it (hence why they even exist), and are doing a very competent job at providing programs to help people affected by it and making an active effort to stop it.

So I guess the fault lies in the people especially on social media who went all #kony2012 clusterfuck as if they knew everything. from all the people who I talked to who posted that on their walls, they thought Kony was still in Uganda, the biggest monster in all of central africa and he is the worst man in the world right now...did I get that right?

Bullshit...

I donate to 4 different charities monthly...every single charity covers admin+fund raising from the tax re-claim they get from the government...

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/gift-aid.htm

Before you talk please educate yourself on how charities work...IC is taking the piss and it's clear.

This thread was a really good read I have to say.
I haven't seen anything on FB about it, but the only people I have on their are family and really close friends. Luckily my family isn't that dumb and the only friend I have who would spam something like this has been busy spamming Ron Paul stuff lately.

I kind of wish I had been paying attention to the initial flood of 'support.'

That's just stupid, inattentive people. I don't recall them being part of any of my responses. Where's the part where they are IC?

IC is not a UK charity; the same rules likely do not apply. I'm not sure what the US equivalent laws are.

Anyone else find the comments towards the end of the video regarding "propaganda" and what we "want" REALLY out of place?

I'm totally for this guy being brought to justice, but it goes against everything this guy was saying in his video ("it's ALL about Kony") to start ranting about corporations and society.

Hate to say it, but I turned it off right after I heard that. I don't need someone preaching to me that I "like" what I "like" because someone told me to "like" it (plus I don't even drink soda, so his point is fucking moot).

wow its gone truly mainstream!!! :O:O
Just saw a segment on my local tv news about it.

wow :O

If you agree with it or not they really succeeded in bringing it attention.

The part in the video about consumerism besides being pretty irrelevant isn't smart if they seek bipartisan support.

In America you fill in a form called 1040 (schedule A)...it's works the same as it does in the UK the charities and donors can re-claim tax...

What % of people who shared or liked it on Facebook actually watched more than 30 seconds of this video?

I just don't think most people have the attention span for 30min youtube videos on things like this.

Dude what are you talking about, Kony has never been irrelevant. He just moved from northern Uganda into neighboring countries were he continued his shit, i think they even mentions so in the video.

The LRA was a formidable and terrifying force when it was based in northern Uganda in the 1990s. But it was chased out of Uganda in 2006 and is now increasingly weak and desperate, constantly on the run from U.S. and African military pursuers.

Sheltering deep in the remote jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it operates mostly in small groups of five or six, raiding villages for food and sometimes abducting one or two villagers to work as porters, reports say.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, keeps track of the LRA’s impact on civilians. It says the rebel militia has launched 20 attacks in northeastern Congo this year – but most of the attacks were low-level raids with little impact.

In total, the LRA killed just one person in Congo this year, while abducting 17 people and displacing about 3,000 people, according to the UNHCR. Those numbers are far less than the toll it inflicted at its peak in the 1990s or even as recently as 2008.

The attacks by the LRA in Congo this year are “the last gasp of a dying organization,” says Mounoubai Madnodje, spokesman for the UN peacekeepers in Congo.

“They used to control villages and take hostages,” he told the Reuters news agency. “Right now it looks more like people trying to survive. … It’s small-scale attacks.”

The LRA perpetrated massacres of civilians in Congo in the Christmas period in 2008 and 2009, but more recently those attacks have been halted. In the second half of last year, its attacks began to decline dramatically.

There is your answer.

Now tell me he is as relevant as he was in say..2006 when this should have been the time to make it viral

Like i said they moved out of Uganda into neighboring countries, the countries that the LRA are located in has no defense. The 200 of them are capable of wreaking havoc because the countries they reside in cannot defend against them, again it was addressed in the video if you watched it.

As far as Kony is still on the run he is capable of reorganizing and rebuilding a formidable army, it wouldn't be the first time it has happened. Kony is weak now and this is the right time to take him out, we never know what the future holds.

He is not as strong as he used to be and his movement is dying. The notion to release the video and make money off it to make aware of a situation which is already dying down is the issue here. They are playing off the emotion making people buy $30 kits for something which is not as high risk as it was in 2006. Most of the video shot is from 2006-2008 for God's sakes. Africans have been dealing with him successfully as you can see yet not a single african or ugandan or congo official or local helping affiliate was shown, interviewed or discussed. NOT ONE>

You seem hung up on their intent of selling the kit and i do agree that it is a very cheap way of doing business. But 3 days ago 40 million people did not know of Kony, today they do. Whether you agree with their tactics or not you cannot deny that it opened peoples eyes to something they did not know about, like i said Kony is weak and it is the right time to take him down. A weak man can always climb back up and wreak havoc, a dead man can't.

Plus I have another question. You agree he has not been in Uganda since 2006 but Invisible Child provides those measly 32% of direct resources to Ugandans? For what purpose exactly?

Assist those affected by Kony.

3) Operate programs on the ground in LRA-affected areas that provide protection, rehabilitation and development assistance.
