We talk to people. It's part of our job. And lately we're not hearing any big bombshells about the next generation of game consoles, but we're hearing the same buzz we've been hearing all year: the next generation of Xbox and PlayStation are right around the corner.

If you talk to people about the next-gen games at, oh, I don't know, a major gaming trade show or a major gaming awards show, the persistent impression given is that these new systems will be powerful. The old comparison I heard—and saw backed up by a solid report on IGN—was that the new Xbox would be eight times more powerful than the 360. That's old reporting, from earlier in the year. We've also heard that Durango is roughly as graphically capable as the second-most powerful PC on the market today, which, yes, is quite the indirect statement. The chatter we hear is that Durango and Orbis are close in power to each other or at least both in the same league past the current gen. Much may have changed since then and, as any Wii U owner can tell you, it's damn hard to assess how powerful a system is even when playing the first batch of games a developer made for it. (Or don't ask a Wii U user... ask an Xbox 360 user to compare 2005 360 launch games Kameo: Elements of Power or Perfect Dark Zero to 2012's Halo 4).

The vibe I get when I hear about Durango is that Microsoft is on the mark. Sony appears to inspire less confidence, though I've had a hard time nailing down why and discerning how much lost confidence is due to the on-and-off troubles of the PlayStation 3 and the struggles of the Vita vs. how much lost confidence is due to any problems looming for PS4. What I do know is that confidence is high that the next Xbox will be out in time for next Christmas. Confidence is less high that Sony will pull off the same feat, though they want to.

Uh oh. I love my PS3 and its exclusives are some of the best looking console games on the market, but it's no secret that I get pretty much all multiplats on the 360. If Durango is more powerful at a base level than Orbis then Sony is in REAL trouble.

So what would 2nd most powerful mean in PC terms. Something like a gtx 680 as the gpu since 690 is the top?

I would guess they're talking about single core GPUs from AMD and that they mean that in terms of what you can do optimization wise instead of the literal part.

I could be wrong.

It seems the consensus that Durango is going to deliver in terms of specs- the wait till release of the next generation will be painful!

What they said about Sony doesn't surprise me at all. They have a lot on their table... controlling all of it on top of releasing a new system in 2013 may be too much for them.

The next Xbox coming in Fall 2013 is almost guaranteed at this point though.

I don't know what that means. Is that the entire package? Because the most powerful gaming computer is probably in the 12k$ range.

Do they just mean 'as powerful as the GPU'?

yeah that's how I read it in terms of the less confidence thing. That it was referring to being able to launch in time and all that.

I don't think they meant it that way, more like they don't think Sony will be able to release it in 2013. Besides it's written in the article that they're both similar power-wise.

Just what we already guessed reconfirmed.

The idea that MS will make next Christmas and Sony won't seems highly ingrained without any proof at all.

I read it less as a power thing and more of a "this is probably not going to sell nearly as well, and likely release later to boot" kind of thing.

Though, the rumor impressions also lend that Microsoft goes out and meets with way more third parties, so that's also probably a big boost to confidence in Microsoft's system.

didn't we have rumours a bit back showing that Sony is even further along in the process than MS. It does seem like one of those things that's picking up steam by word of mouth rather than by evidence.

They basically gave a really vague answer that's only going to be more vague when the system comes out since 2nd most powerful now will not be like that in december 2013.

These systems need to be revealed asap. The speculation and vagueness is driving me nuts.

As long as both can handle Crysis 3 at MAX settings, I'm happy.

AFAIK, neither 360 or PS3 is able to run Crysis 1 at PC max settings....correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, really. I feel like a lot of developers are sick and tired porting their games to three, four, five different similarly powered systems.

"Sony" & "lost confidence" seems to be the ubiquitous & good pals this gen. They might as well leave the HW industry gracefully.

lol

Anyway, it confirms what any rational person should realize that both the PS4 and the Xbox whatever will be similar in power.

Which could also be related to where decisions are being made (PS4-Japan) and what publishers/developers (I bet all NA based) have been asked by Totilo.

I think both Sony and MS have contained leaks very well for these consoles. Sony probably slightly better than MS.

Combined with their current company wide problems, the gaming press seem to be jumping to the conclusion that Sony may not make 2013.

I ain't betting on that just yet.

Obviously this all has to he taken with a (huge) grain of salt. But some of these statements is clearly speculation. Some of the doubt re: sony's new console can be based on how quiet the rumors mill has been. Very unusual for them. All the major leaks have been about the Durango. Also, there are rumors that MS may delay launch because they are having troubles with the system (processor I think?). They're both rumors, and there's no way of knowing which is more accurate. I'm not a fan of these types of rumors because they tend to becway off based, and just diappoint

What I would like to see is:

6-8 core CPU, 12-16 threads don't care about PPC or x86 (I would bet on IBM ahead of AMD though if I had to choose)
160ALUs on the CPU
Dedicated audio/video decoding hardware with compatibility for the latest codecs (HEVC)
GTX670 equivalent dedicated graphics power
80GB SSD
802.11ac
BDXL 100GB triple layer discs
8x read speed with acoustic silencing
4G radio for future proofing

I think that can be done for $399 with a small loss up front, maybe $50.

Sony is launching first! I can make baseless assumptions too! :P But seriously, I expect both systems to launch around the same time and I don't see anything to suggest otherwise.

In all seriousness though, the frustrating part as a person who expects PS4 to be "good" is how they allegedly still can't inspire confidence amongst third parties when the next gen developments are already under way and the launch schedule for next gen console is perhaps just over a year. Sony aren't Nintendo. They aren't competing with Nintendo and definitely can't tell the third parties to effectively piss off and still WiiU in large numbers and make profits because nintendo makes consoles for their own games.

:lol

You wont given up the gloom and doom will you ?

lol this guy won't leave it alone apparently

your posts are getting more and more annoying. Time to add you to the ignore list

bwahahahaha XD

Well according this rumours both the consoles will be quite similar to an extent

So pretty much this proves his previous theory wrong since he basing his opinion on every ps4 rumour-

120W, 1.2TF (AMD 76XX) discrete GPU, 2GB DDR3 RAM, AMD A10 5700K, new and mind bogglingly innovative controller.... Yup we'll be lucky to see PS4 get even close to this.

It's means they can claim victory when the actual specs are announced? No matter what the specs are?

Just like PC gamers will do when specs are announced xD

yeah. MS has done a good job getting the next xbox out in the hands of developers.

Its why we have been seeing so many leaks about it for so long and why talk on the ps4 front has been so quite. Sony just isnt as good as MS when it comes to the whole developer relations thing

Still lets not place bets on who is going to crash and burn just yet but I will say if Sony cant get it out in at least one region in 2013 then they are boning themselves pretty hard.
