Kotaku: Three Weeks Later, DriveClub Still Doesn't Work Properly

Love the game, preordered it, preordered the season pass, got a T80 wheel too...but this situation really sucks.

No challenges...
Online works...sometimes...
Leaderboards work...sometimes...
All the fame you earned "offline" wasn't retroactive...

Now, the updates and DLC seem to be on hold until they fix the issues.

Aside a "we're still working on it", they haven't said anything else. But still sell the game digitally and across retailers.

Heck, makes me wonder if there is a compensation, how non-digital owners will qualify for one?

I look at my massively-grown friends list (as a result of DRIVECLUB GAF) and the amount of people playing have dropped off significantly. I have a feeling that Y2Kev is right.

yoshida is racking up disaster after disaster, there's driveclub, millions wasted on santa monica's canned game, the last guardian, overseeing the death of gran turimo, plus i'm sure there's many more that i can't remember - it's a joke, not even big phil harrison was this bad.
I don't disagree, but at the same time the ps4 is the hottest selling console on the market, so he must be doing something right. Or maybe the competition is just doing things so abysmally wrong that Sony can just coast.

Not sure about the PR strategy here and whether it is better or worse to not mention it until they have a solid ETA. All the facebook updates are coming from devs and their current focus is on getting it to work. I agree that they should absolutely reiterate in every update to allay such concerns that the PS+ version will get axed.

One way or the other, it's going be a rough ride till they fix it. But I don't think "not fixing it and letting people move on to other games" is an option for Sony. That will destroy the studio and Sony's image. The press and the gaming community will make sure of it. The PS+ version is coming. Only question is when and whether it will help lift the game out of the grave it is being buried (half) alive in.
Yeah, that does seem like a balanced way to look at it.

Well, hopefully developers will be more inclined to use open betas for online-heavy games so that they don't repeat such an awful launch.

My one critique of the article, and it's an important one if you ask me, is that it fails to mention the fact that the PS+ version is nowhere in sight.

Yup, hes in the Calvin Coolidge position. Dont do much of anything, reap benefits of a boom you had little to do with. Few people get fired during good times (and underlings are scapegoated) and too many are fired during bad.

It's dropping off for the more obvious reason that the game isn't fully functional yet. The rest is just wild speculation, which all seems to make sense only because everyone is understandably pissed.

Try playing the campaign on TitanFall. Doesn't work, cause no players. Where's my refund?!?!?!

We gave BF4 a chance, after months and months of "updates". But now that (almost) everything is fixed in 3 weeks, people are demanding refunds left and right.

Oh and are we gonna get anything in place if Driveclub PS Plus edition for October or are they just gonna pretend like its a "gift" that we didnt pay for?

Reeeal tired of PSN giving me indies. Some Ive enjoyed, but I could have bought those for less than 50 a year, much less if Steam sale.

Why would you get anything in addition? DC wasn't a replacement for a October PS+ title, it was in addition to them. If the PS+ version comes out in November, you'll get it in addition to the normal PS+ titles as well.

They have the most powerful console to play multiplats for non-PC gamers, and that's a TON of gamers. The most popular franchises on the planet are not exclusive in any way, shape, or form. The constant "this company needs to get their exclusives going in order to succeed" mantra is simply not true. Now for the gamer who plays multiplats on PC and only gets a console for exclusive, obviously for that gamer this situation is pretty bad for Sony as they continue to swing and miss on their exclusive games this gen.

Sony has been disappointing thus far and MS has definitely brought the exclusive game quality this gen so far, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking these exclusive games drive the industry or console sales.

Ding Ding Ding.

Sony fucked up so bad with PS3 that the Red Ring of Death could not slow down Xbox 360. Microsoft fucked up so bad with Xbox One that PSN issues will not slow down PS4.

We are witnessing the same thing with third party games. Destiny is probably going to be the best selling game for a second month in a row, and you cannot even play the thing right now without getting disconnected. Companies seem content to just let their competitors trip all the way into the end zone.

Battlefield 4?

Isn't it still relatively popular online? I rarely see anyone complaining about the launch issues any more, unless it's in a point scoring debate.

Evolution Studios have really fucked this up. Someone needs to be fired.

No, no-one needs to be fired. They need to be left to fix the problem and then make sure it doesn't happen again. Some slapped wrists and maybe a hit on bonuses, but nothing else needs to be done.

I never play racers online, but the rest of the club stuff has worked for two weeks for me. Such drama from mostly people who don't own it, such concern.

I assume you can back up such a claim or is this a poorly thought out attempt at damage control?

I really do hope so. I also hope they fix other issues that this game has. I have put in tons of hours and there are just some things that bother me a lot. I have some videos I took that I need to clip up a bit, and post (as I mentioned before that I would post).

Are there really no players on TF any more?

Looking forward to the video

Yes I shouldn't be concerned at all about a product that I paid 50$ for and still doesn't function all that well, and was even worse less than a week ago. As much as I enjoy the game, this game has issues, big ones, and people need to discuss it. If they never get discussed than how is anything ever gonna be known and how will anything ever be fixed. Just because someone makes a complaint about the game doesn't mean they don't own it, people can find faults with games. Like to fix multiplayer they should be making the cars ghost through each other. So many people dismiss and attack those who sometimes do have legit complaints. I still wonder what's keeping the challenges back at this point.

Edit: I am happy now that I can upload videos to youtube though, can finally start having fun making some Driveclub videos.

Hard to believe they shut Studio Liverpool and kept Evolution Studios.

I miss Wipeout T_T

Thanks for this thread. Just put in for a refund...

Hopefully getting a refund on a game doesn't lock out the ability to re-buy the game in the future, but who knows. I'd be open to it.
Store credit != refund. That refund thing was a problem on Xbox right? it was due to the dumb nature of their DRM. Hopefully Sony doesn't have a similar implementation.

Imagine wipeout ps4 instead of Driveclub, I would day one that so hard. I'd rather evo did a destruction derby game using their motor storm experience and if Sony could get it, get them to make a micro machines game like the motor storm rc game from a few years back

It's an absolute embarrasment that we haven't gotten so much as an update on plus edition. To think, I'll be playing FH2 todat, before I ever even got DC. Never thought that'd happen

I've got to ask. All these heavily touted "social features" like club tracking, friend tracking, all that shit. Was it worth it at all? Would a more traditional racer with less emphasis on social features have been better? Was all of this an idea that spawned into someone's head thinking that social features were the next big thing and it turns out it really doesn't enhance the experience all that much and was basically a waste of time?

I'm genuinely curious.

I initially paid with psn store credit, but I get what you mean.
Oh okay that's completely fair. I hate it when you pay by bank card and then they try to give you store credit to preserve their sales figures.

Might be seen as worse that they are addressing freeloaders in their messaging while those who paid $60 are still having issues. Sorry but PS+ people can wait for now. I know you're disappointed, and perhaps some of you even deserve extra PS+ time but the focus should be on getting it working for those who paid full price.

Been working great for me the last few days - instant leader board updates, accolades and face-offs all updating.

I must admit I have forgiven quite a bit as the driving is sublime

Hard to believe they shut Studio Liverpool and kept Evolution Studios.

I often tell myself it was either an accidental finger-slip on a touch-screen decision box and nobody wanted to back down to save face, or an especially cruel coin toss. Theres too much of a gap in quality and reliability between one groups output and the others.

I'm sure there are some lovely human beings with mouths to feed at Evo, but they flubbed this big time when they got a pretty big stay of execution for like 2 years running now.

Such a shit show. Everything about this game has just be a train wreck.

It was the same last generation with Motorstorm, so I guess they just thought they could get away with it again.

Eh, DriveClub is a great driving game underneath all the online problems. The track design is really good and there are a healthy number of courses, the driving itself is great from handling to the sense of speed, the face-offs bring a nice extra spice to races (when they work), the club stuff & progression gives a pretty decent sense of mini-community etc.. If they'd just get the online working better, DriveClub would easily be one of the best arcade racers in the last few years. It's too bad Evolution screwed it up so badly. They should've done an open beta test for the game months before release and maybe this could've been avoided.

I think it is two factors.

1. Driveclub was promised before launch for free, later understood as a piece of the game for free (but much bigger than a demo.)

2. I know we get shamed for saying this, but I want some damn AAA games on Plus. Id take Knack over yet another artsy well reviewed sidescroller (though something better like AC4 would be nice too). And I think many feel this way even if they wont say it. I wasnt a plus member on ps3 before, but was assured not to worry about it becoming mandatory for online play because it was such great value. I understand they had no AAA games to give us at launch, but its been a year now. Even a piece of a big budget game woulda been nice.

So ya, I dont feel like Driveclub is an "addition". It's the indies that should be the nice cherry on top, not vice versa.

Well this kinda confirms that this will be Evolution's last game. Zipper didn't come back from a bad (horrible) online launch and it wasn't even their fault. They've also been advertising the PS plus version of this game for a while on the PS store so there's that too. Just a hot mess all around. Smh.

PSN is perfectly fine. This is the studio's problem. Just like BF4 was.Or is that because of incompetence from both MS and Sony according to you?

Huh? Driveclub is a first party, AAA game. Evolution is owned by Sony. It's servers are Sony's servers.

BF4 is none of these things, it's all Electronic Arts and their servers.

Sony is totally responsible for all of this, because Evolution is part of Sony.

FH2 is fantastic. After playing it I was looking forward to trying the plus edition of DC, but I've basically given up on it now.

I don't recall any major issues with any of the MS games. There was the unfortunate timing of Apocalypse, but none of the games had any real issues.

I have very fond memories of playing PR with an old Gamesradar crew back in the day. Was fantastic.

It's almost a month with no sign of when they're going to have this fixed.

There's no excuse at this point. They can't even give an ETA.

Heads need to roll. This isn't an MMO, it's a damn driving game.

SMH at all the drive-by posts of "frustrated" people who are waiting for the PS+ Edition. Don't you guys realize that once it's available you'll get a much better experience than people who bought the game on launch!?
