Kotaku's new, old editor sets out direction for the site (sort of)

People love to smash Kotaku, and when I say people I use that term loosely. Patricia is a talented writer who's been honing her craft for awhile, she's never particularly been my favorite but she's somebody who's committed to the industry and making changes in her own way, hoping things work out for her

Kotaku/Deadspin used to have some really talented writers but those days are long gone

Ok Kotaku, money where your mouth is, let a writer that voted for Trump publish an article
Let's not. How about publish an article by someone who voted for neither Trump nor Biden. The Right Right and Left Left are both utterly unbearable.

Wasn't shthey primarily an agenda writer? Everybody knows the direction the site will take. The same as it's been going. Into the landfill.

Back in the day I used to visit Kotaku frequently, until slowly I started seeing more and more stupid articles, increasingly woke crap and terrible hot takes. By the time I decided to no longer go there I remember noting how a good 2 thirds of the type of articles that pushed me away from the site were from her.

And I thought Kotaku couldn't get worse lol.
Well, one more reason not to visit I guess.

I cannot wrap my head around how she thinks explaining things for a broad audience is limiting that audience. That isn't how it works. We'd all love to be writing exactly like we would when talking to out friends on Facebook but that isn't journalism.

The only, and I mean ONLY way to redeem Kotaku would be to fire everyone that works there (or who has ever worked there), change the name of the site, change owners, become independent, psychologically screen everyone who applies for a writing job for “Dark Triad” personality traits (Narcissism, Machiavellianism, Psychopathy), have everyone submit a sample piece on a game review that doesn’t feature preachy inter sectionalism, have them all sign contractual agreements to not write victim diaries and problematize video games………

Okay nevermind, this shit is impossible

There is no need for a "gaming website" on a premise of Kotaku/IGN/GamingBolt all these useless sites. Goodbye.

Kotaku, just fucking die already. There are much better places for gaming news and there are no real gaming journalists on that site anyway. Just 'journalisming". All they have are activists that would rather be working at Vox, CNN or some other extreme left shit-rag and are hoping for a future job.

For me it's just "you're a slut and I don't want to read your opinion disguised as a videogame article , open your own blog for that".
I don’t think so at all. That game certainly makes you think about the exact issues she raises and I think she was honest in how it made her feel. You seem young to not be able to see that.

Hahaha, so I start reading the OP, after a few sentences I get really annoyed, so I open the article to Kotaku to see who wrote it. who is it? Yup Patricia Harnedez,

I stopped reading Kotaku when she started writing for Kotaku. I don't share Patricia's ideas and preferences in videogames.
I diden't finish reading OP's post, this is the only way to deal with this Kotaku crap, just stop reading, it's gone and it done.

Video game websites, as they exist now, repeatedly fail to represent the wide swath of people who play games.

Umm.. their job is to cover games, not to represent gamers. Write articles about games. The game's industry. The game MAKERS. I dont ever see Sports writers write articles about fans after their team loses a game. I dont understand this nonsense.

If you believe that a VERY diverse set of people play video games than the industry has already done its job catering to or attracting a diverse crowd. Diversity is a non issue. A mexican gamer doesnt love Destiny because his struggles in a country ravaged by a drug war were accurately portrayed in PvE raids. He loves it because its a good video game.

If they want to cater to the gaming audience then give them what they are logging in to read. I.e., GAMING news. We had the Bluepoint acquisition news leak yesterday and yet I havent seen a single journalist call Sony and ask for some clarification. Some did reach out to Sony and Kojima about the whole Silent Hill ARG but settled for a no-comment. I dont know. Maybe do some actual investigative journalism for once? Get some people to go off the record? You know. do your job?

Game blogs are just no longer relevant, they haven't been for a long awhile.

Kotaku isn't and hasn't either, they've hardly been video game related for years. It's just overflowing with a bunch of radical opinions being shoved into and around video games and other pop culture hobbies.

But much like THAT other place, people keep talking about them, and keep giving them clicks. I don't get it, lmao.

Who gives a shit about Kotaku, besides cormack obviously. The fact that you wasted time reading that blog piece is troubling to say the least.

I am just going to lay this here and be done with it.

She had me in the first half, not going to lie. The second half though, shaking my head. She lost the message and vision she wants to morph the site into moving forward.

At the end of the day the average person that happens across a Kotaku article/site is going to see this.

Super relevant gif.

The problem with Kotaku isn't that "we have to explain social issues because we're writing to bigots and not oppressed people," or whatever, the issue is that Kotaku feels so erroneously superior and lofty to it's peers and the people that GIVE THEM WORK. They act like they're journalists on the front lines of a war, ducking bomb fire and diving into the trenches to tell the gracious masses what they've seen. Truth is, most people who have never heard of Kotaku experience something like this:

I WONDER HOW THE NEW RESIDENT EVIL GAME IS! I REALLY LIKED THE 2 REMAKE

*reads three lines of a Kotaku review*

"And quite frankly, being a Dunce-presenting transsexual illegal immigrant former emancipated black-ish peoplekin, I have to wonder if a game about a viral pandemic was what we needed in the midst of COVID stricken political climates! And don't get me started on all the female gazing tentacle rapey stuff!"

*never visits site again*

Yes, you need to change your site's direction. Mostly because you need to stop detesting the culture, properties and people making up what gives you money. Imagine being a vegan working at a slaughterhouse or a pyromaniac being a firefighter. Largely the same energy here.

This is the kinda writing you can expect from Kotaku

"CONTENT WARNING: Usually, these pieces are labeled Not Safe For Work (NSFW). This is still true, but today, I have another warning for you: This piece is Not Safe For Anyone Drinking Liquids, Eating Oatmeal, Or Any Other Viscous Slash Chunky Liquid (NSFADLEOOAOVSCL). You’ll soon see why."

These people need to get it through their heads that the only reason people are interested in personal and subjective pieces is because they are already invested in the writer/commentator as a personality.

This is why YouTubers are putting them out of business. You can't do it the other way around, especially so when you aren't a brilliant writer.

But also, I want to dismantle and redefine what a video game website can be. I do not like what I see. Where to even begin?

Quit your job, create a site dedicated to politics, skin color, and gender first but fun gaming last. Then name the site Offworld.com....oh wait, someone already did that. :pie_roffles:

Read through a few of those bits, felt like rambling and like no lessons have being learnt.

I take it she is saying this because the site is in trouble?

My favourite part is her saying they want to reach a wider audience... Ya in your dreams.

"I want to print stories that you’d be able to tell a friend about at a bar, even if they don’t play games."

Yeah, that's not gonna happen. It's not gonna happen for the same reason you can't walk into a bar in Italy and expect someone to be interested in NFL.

"I do not want to tell my writers to grow thicker skin, though inevitably they do. I want the world to be a kinder place. It shouldn’t require bravery to write about fucking video games."

This bravery comment need explaining. Is it also brave to make videogames? If so, does that mean the people making them are more brave than you writing about them? Of course not. Writing stuff on the internet in the face of angry hardcore gamers doesn't require bravery. Just patience.

"But also, I want to dismantle and redefine what a video game website can be. I do not like what I see. Where to even begin?"

Kotaku is exactly what it wants to be already. No need to desperately ascribe some greater purpose. They provide general coverage of the industry through the Kotaku lens and write reviews. They've reached their peak by hiring a team of writers all cut from the same cloth. That's fine. I'm not into hating Kotaku as much as many here and I can enjoy something they've written on occasion. They lean into woke and it has its audience. Meh. 🤷‍♂️

...didn't the last editor in chief also come out and say "we don't want to cover new games, we wanna cover shit people are playing"?
Just cover videogames, video game lore, stories, etc. Theres all sorts of small YouTube channels that make 30 minute videos covering the history of _______ that get a ton of views.

The idiots/mental patients who write for Kotaku/Giant Bomb/Polygon etc. all seem deeply invested in the idea that there is an 'Apocalypse Now' level of fearless truth telling and uncompomising creative integrity in video games, and I agree with them as I press X to blow man's head off and match these gems to see anime boobs. Truly, 'Life Is Strange' is like Proust.

They're activists, not journalists. The new G4 hired a new female 'journo' and I kid you not, her qualifications were she has a Bachelor's in Communications and she remembers having fun playing Smash on her brother's Nintendo

They are the epitome of what ideologically possessed is.

Of course people who have the same backwards crazy political ideas are going to defend them and their agenda.
