"The Cubs will never-ever win the World Series" ~ John Oliver, 2008
I used that Daily Show segment a bunch to point and laugh at the undecided vote.

I don't think I can use it anymore.

I dodged multiple MLM bullets in my lifetime. This is one thing I can be truly thankful for.

I'd be a terrible salesman anyway.

EDIT: Holy crap, the video is 31 minutes long?

Last Week Tonight - Multilevel Marketing

Partway in, they show a clip from a marketing convention from a company called MarketAmerica. I have one question.

Who the FUCK goes willingly to something like that!? Who is soulless enough to say "You know what....I wanna go to a corporate event designed not to entertain me but to try and slowly drain what little humanity I have left." There is a huge fucking audience there! Who are those people!?

I had the bullshit It Works all over my Facebook feed. I had to take care of that nonsense

Woooo! Glad to see my work making it to LWT! :D

I live in Vegas and these events are hosted here (and Florida) a lot. I've gone to a few, because I got free passes. The food is AMAZING, you have an open bar at a top nightclub afterwards, and you meet all sorts of people who want to try and partner up with you (in the business sense, but probably in the familiar sense too).

I have zero clue what the fuck anyone was selling, I happily play zelda on my 3DS while they drone on but damn the food is top tier. You also sometimes get free tchotchkes like toys and office stuff. I'm married so I immediately go home afterwards but I imagine a lot of hooking up goes on at these things too.

Didn't they already do a segment on this? Or was it something similar? I remember Oliver talking about people who were in MLMs and got screwed hard.

I think he did a segment on pyramid schemes, or ones the SSC would classify as such in an earlier season, but this about things like Amway who go around trying to look like legit businesses, but are clearly pyramid schemes

Oh gotcha. Okay, these bigger MLMs are significantly worse then.

I totally have a former school colleague who is a higher-up in one of these companies. Crazy. I thought everything about her company felt sketchy as shit.

What was your work?

I do litigation support for the FTC. I (along with many other EDU people) did work on that case processing discovery data for the lawyers to use. I'd have to double check, but I think that included the FTC's forensic team cloning some of the servers at Herbalife offices.

In addition to the settlement against Herbalife that is mentioned, the FTC took action against Vemma, also mentioned in the John Oliver bit.

Well, this week's episode should be interesting.

I am half expecting the first 5 minutes to be john oliver to merely say
"fuck you america" and walk off set and then it just to be a recording of the set doing nothing for 5 minutes until they do a transition to something like "the next president of the united states" with a collection of scenes reminding people what they just voted for before moving on to the main story.

Hell, this should be the main story. Or a 20 minute retrospective comparing his rise to the presidency with the election of Hitler.

He should just just stare into the camera with a face of surprise for 20+ minutes and just before the end say 'fuck you'.

I'm more curious how Samantha Bee's episode tonight is going to be. I don't know how funny they'll be able to be with how angry they'll likely be.

Colbert, Bee, and Oliver are going to be depressing as fuck. And keeping it 1600. All the shows that gave me so much hope and entertainment will now have to face reality.

We already got a taste of that last night, during Colbert's Showtime special. The show started out with everyone joking around, but by the midway part of the show when it was inevitable that Trump was going to win, the jokes stopped.

Watch Colberts show from last night. He actually ended it early I think. You see him laughing then he just trys to keep it cool.

I watched the ending segment. Yeah it was depressing as fuck.

I'm not familiar with this Bill Maher but his last tweet in very on point and one of the biggest cause of this shit and I've been saying it for years.

As for John Oliver I wonder what would a meeting between him and Trump look like

They didn't even bring out half of the guests.

It just turned into an improv "what do we do now?" with an anxious and visibly upset audience.

In hindsight I'm glad I made a thread for it, but looking at the OP and what was planned, holy fuck.

Yeah, it was kind of surreal seeing the show transform from a typical Colbert Late Show, to a depressing mess. I'm really interested to see tonight's Full Frontal and Sunday's Last Week Tonight.

I think the more likely, actually relevant, topic is how the hell everyone missed what was actually happening. Whether that kind of postmortem is possible within five days is a different matter, but that should really be the first thing to address. Because apparently, that white rust belt and white women voting against women can get shit done NOBODY else wants or even considers a good, decent, human idea. Or relevant for any kind of future generation. They probably don't vote under that motivation, but that's what they've sown anyway. They'll never blame themselves, because "they're all good people". Buuuut that's what needs to be addressed and called out for the future.

It was pretty clear the major city states, much like with Brexit, were in favor of Clinton.

I got tired of the wall to wall Trump coverage months ago and stopped watching The Daily Show and Colbert. Now I think ti's finally time to take them off the DVR schedule.

An entire episode on the rural/urban divide for 30 minutes, or 25, with 5 of John weeping.
Have Andy on to console you John, it'll be fun :)

nothing can be changed now.
I'd rather we just move on... hope for the best, and move onto things that we can maybe change.

like people's preference of chocolate ice cream over vanilla.

you are all crazy... vanilla has unlimited possibilities while chocolate is just chocolate.

Just ignore it, and it will go away.

Hopefully he'll use the power of the "John Oliver Effect" to good use and continue to expose the waste and corruption in our society. The man actually makes an impact, an important one. Not many people have that ability.

Regarding Trump, I expect him to address it briefly at the beginning and probably let us know that they will be doing a segment on the "how this happened" later on down the road. Being fairly self-deprecating, I also expect him to admit that the hubris and arrogance of the media that dismissed Trump as a joke was at least partly complicit in his getting elected.

Salena Zito said it best:

The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.
