To be kinda fair to your GF, if she's talking about the anime then it's okay since the anime does not have this as the ending. Neither does the live action movie. They both end with the girl staying as a little kid going to school with the guy staying as the surrogate parent.
Yeah I was wondering about that. I know at first he is against it and can't even grasp the idea of seeing Rin as anything more than a daughter but after she tries to run away and then goes and visits her mom he's okay with it as long as she waits til graduation? I was so confused.
Korrasami.
I was firmly a Korrasami shipper from the start of Book 3 onwards and my reaction to it actually happening was crazy.
On a negative side, Samurai Flamenco.
It had the most obvious and sweet gay love story I've ever seen in an anime. My shipper heart was on cloud 9.
And it ended with this scene:
There was even artwork of the two characters married.
And yet apparently in interviews the creators said they were both straight and just friends. It was mind boggling.
It wasn't even subtext.

What annoyed me about the ending is how close the author got to Ranma and Akane tying the knot and then chickens out at the last second, only to imply a page later the they'll get married eventually. It felt like the author was afraid to really commit to it.
No no no no no... why did you have to remind me of that? I try to remember Usagi Drop as a story with only 4 volumes that was cancelled before the author could get to her as a teen.
What am I reading? Zoro x Robin will always be way better than Sanji x Robin, even though both don't even make any sense.
Nothing in the entire show hinted she liked him until the convenient flashback and then she immediately goes "oh yeah shove that tongue down my throat"

The explanation given made it worse. "She's technically not related to him and if you remember back, she didn't want to be adopted. So that's all ok"
At the very least the downfall of Sakura into a needy idiot unable to move on gave us one of the best female characters in the franchise.
