What about Letterman himself?

When Leno decided not to retire, NBC Execs offered him several options including daytime and a show on one of NBC's other networks like Bravo and MSNBC. Leno turned them down to stay on one one of the big four nets.wadsworth said:I wonder if Leno's contract stipulates that he needs to be at nighttime... they should totally move him to daytime... I think he'd kill in ratings at the time... way more old people awake at that time!!!

O'Brien is averaging 2.5 million nightly viewers, compared with 4.2 for Letterman's "Late Show," according to Nielsen figures. And the younger audience that O'Brien was expected to woo has been largely unimpressed, with O'Brien and Letterman's shows tying among advertiser-favored viewers ages 18 to 49.
Makes sense. In my 21 year old opinion, censored Conan ~ usual Letterman. And by censored, I mean middle-aged person censored.Plinko said:Since in the last thread people were stating Conan was doing well with the 18-49 demographic, I'll post this:

New Conan should be just Conan. Richter really ruins his flow.

Everything about Jay Leno makes me want to kill Jay Leno.TheGreatDave said:Everything about that advert made me want to kill Jay Leno.
The pipe dream idea of Conan to Comedy Central would be amazing, but that will never happen. It would have to be too much of an audience cut and pay cut. Plus, IIRC he used to bitch about how it's so unfair that The Daily Show wins all the late night awards, so there might be some bad blood. But that would be an amazing fit.
Fuck that trash. If Adam Carolla couldn't have the American version of Top Gear, no one can! >:|VGChampion said:NBC should just give Leno a car show. Sort of like his garage Internet site. I don't have any of the old interviews on hand, I just remember him sounding really bitter. And I would assume most people in the business would care about pay and audience. I'm not going to pretend I know much about any of this or am good at predicting the future. I would of course much prefer to be wrong, because giving Conan a Comedy Central time slot would be like a dream come true.BrandNew said:What? I can't imagine Conan of all people giving a shit about that. Besides, him and Jon (and Stephen for that matter) are really good friends.
Yup. Couldn't let jay go, and moved conan up prematurely. Canabalized the ratings for both shows, local news, and had less opportunity to score strong dramas that might have gotten followers for future seasons. What we are seein here is just desperate ass NBC tryin to fix their fuck up. Whatever they do, letterman will continue to own for a long whileWrath2X said:Hey GAF, I like both Conan and Jay.
Anyway, NBC are a bunch of fuckheads.

Conan wasn't even that great with ratings on the Late Night Show, I even remember Fregusion beating him in ratings a few times. People gave his schtick on the Tonight Show a chance & left in masses.
VistraNorrez said:It really isn't that bad. I don't know why anyone expects dominance straight out the gate it doesn't happen. It took Leno a while before he was beating Letterman. Not to mention Letterman has been stirring controversy like crazy lately. It's been a perfect storm for him really.

He skews much younger than either Letterman or Leno, in fact even younger than his Late Night show. Which would be better in the long run because he could a more loyal and longer lasting audience.
ruby_onix said:Leno needs to fucking retire already. That's the source of everything that's gone wrong. Why is he still working anyways? From what I've read, he has *shitloads* of money and he prides himself on not having touched a dime of the money he's gotten from NBC since he landed the Tonight Show and became financially secure, because he wants to be able to honestly describe his profession as being a comedian, not a talk show host. All of his Tonight Show (and Jay Leno Show) millions are sitting in the bank earning interest. His ridiculously expensive car collection habit is funded by the pocket change he earns by being famous and getting paid a fortune to do side jobs.
Why is he doing the same thing day-in and day-out that he's done for decades when he doesn't need the money and doesn't even respect the job and he has to step on people and ruin lives and be generally hated to do it? Does he have Asperger's syndrome or something? Retire you bastard! Quit while you're ahead. Spend the rest of your life doing the "side jobs" you love and earning more of the kind of money you can actually spend.

teh_pwn said:Yep. Late night talk show hosts are about familiarity, and ratings take time. The other thing to consider is that Conan gets a lot less popular guests because Leno is also in LA and is on prime time. So if you're an actor in Hollywood wanting to promote your movie, wouldn't you choose to go to the guy that's had the highest ratings and is on prime time? The whole thing is really NBC's fault.
As much as Leno is a jackass, I don't think he's really the problem this time. Having his show gutted into half is probably not ideal for him either.
The only thing that makes sense about NBC's decision of having Conan start at 12am ET/11 pm Central is that a lot of Conan's younger audience will tune in after finishing Colbert. But that alone isn't a good strategy for something like the tonight show, which should have a much larger audience long term.
NBC needs to think long term. In 5-10 years, do they want to have some new guy like Fallon/etc heading the tonight show, giving CBS the opportunity to replace Letterman? Or do they want to have Conan as the well known host heading the tonight show with built up ratings against some new guy on CBS?
Hell, if things go more sour, I wouldn't be surprised if Letterman made Conan his heir. Ferguson just isn't suited for the late show.
AlternativeUlster said:Dave on air years ago talked about pretty much doing the show until he dies and then Paul taking over whenever that day does come. I think this was around when NBC announced that Conan was taking over the Tonight Show or something of that sort. Who knows if CBS would allow that to happen but hey, it was something to the extent of what he said.
