Played almost 10 hours so far. I really don't get the negative response (was to be expected though).
Some random thoughts:
Pros:
-Battle system is exciting! Some tough battles that require good planning, strategy and execution. One of the series' best battle system.
-Customization system is deep, it's really fun and addictive to mess around the garbs, weapons, abilities. I was surprised by the amount of different shops and fusion systems that add to the whole experience.
-Amazing soundtrack. The quality, quantity and variety of tracks has no equal. With some of XIII and XIII-2's tracks used here and there, we've got 12 CDs of music used in the game. The wandering musicians are a really nice touch.
-Some of the areas are huge and actually filled with content.
-I thought the clock system would be annoying but it's a welcome change of pace. The EP management adds a bit of strategy and it's totally possible to do everything you want anyway.
-Cutscene direction is cool. Some very stylish FMVs so far.
-Lightning's nonchalant reactions to NPC's requests are hilarious. A bit of self-conscious comedy is exactly what this game needed.
Neutral:
-I like the artistic direction. I could see why others wouldn't though. It's definitely rough on the edges in some sections.
-Same thing for the writing. I liked XIII/XIII-2's, but for those who didn't, it's more of the same here. I can definitely see how the over-the-top, serious feeling and Hillis' stilted delivery might turn away people.
Cons:
-The way they tried to implement a kind of "sandbox" feel to the game is a bit weird. They didn't quite pull it off and we have some weird annoyances as a result. NPC AI paths are all wrong, the cities never feel "alive" as a result.
-The Assassin's Creed "stealth" section was laughable.
-The in-game graphics are rough. Environments feel dated and the game as a whole looks worse than FFXIII which came out 4 years ago.
-Pretty much all of the sound design is rehashed from XIII.
-I like the shop and menu UIs, but the HP/EP/ATB thingy is kinda ugly.
-4.99$ for Yuna's costume? No thanks. Should've been in the game.
-Villain so far isn't convincing. Caius was much more intriguing.
Looking forward to the rest of the playthrough. In the end it does feel like more of a spin-off than a mainline FF. It's still a solid and very enjoyable RPG.
FFXIV: ARR, Bravely Default and this in less than 6 months is a pretty impressive showing from S-E!
Only played 4 or so hours but so far your post is spot on.Played almost 10 hours so far. I really don't get the negative response (was to be expected though).

It's really an FFXIII title. Lots of 8s but also lots of 7s. I dismiss any other score below that though. Good game, just not a masterpiece?
Although I haven't played as far as you, my impressions so far are pretty positive. I think the more action style gameplay is a breath of fresh air for the XIII trilogy and is making the game more fun than it would have been if they just recycled the same battle system again. And yes, there is a lot of potential for the customization. My feeling is that SE should allow this deep kind of customization for all of the characters in Final Fantasy moving forward, or at least something close to this. I know this isn't going to happen, but that kind of player agency would bring a lot of goodwill back to a mainline FF title that has a big budget production like XV.

Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes!
By far my favorite part of the game. I love tweaking stats, bonuses, weapons, accessories, etc. It's so awesome. The costume changes are nice, too. I always liked a visual representation of new gear on characters. If FFXV has this system in place for every character, that's like, a whole point in its favor.
Readjust your expectation, because I don't believe equipment will change character appearance directly in FFXV. Though I think there's a chance there would be alternative outfits strictly for aesthetic purposes, some obtainable in-game and mostly via DLC, like what the Tales series does.

But Tales does it with DLC, mostly. Also, I hate the Tales series....so....nah. Gonna be wildly optimistic for FFXV anyways. It's still like, 8 years away so they'll have plenty of time to make adjustments!
It's 2.5 years away at most, but to be honest, after Xenoblade, I'm tired of equipment having direct impact on appearance. I mean, yeah it seems cool in practice, but most of the armors that I happen to want to use look so unappealing or silly or out of place, I would much rather them creating several sets of outfits strictly for aesthetic you could choose from status menu and let the armors affect only stats/abilities.
Besides, knowing Square Enix, I doubt they would wish to miss the chance to push for some costume DLC.

If 67/100 is better than what you guys expected...exactly how badly did you expect this game to do? It's 16 points lower than XIII and 12 points lower than XIII-2.
Poor Perfo![]()
To be honest it's getting better scores than I expected; seems like a solid effort, but if you consider that this is a mainline Final Fantasy game we are talking about.. yeah

Around 60/100 for me.
Time to start requesting a tessellated bald head, because there won't be an agent forty-fail DLC until that happens. I'm joking of course..
I think the Lara DLC was announced only last week or so, but her dlc picture is even in last year's asian version so everything announced so far was planned far ahead before release.
Pictures of all announced DLC are already on the disc and considering they kept quiet about Lara until now, they may be done with the game's content for good, who knows. They'll all be for sale sooner or later though but that much was already said by SE.

I think I made it pretty clear what is and what isn't real. I just switched off the hair and changed some colors. It's some other garb normally available in the game, purple by default. What the...this picture is on the disc?

Put a couple hours in yesterday, and it doesn't seem as bad as expected so far. I'm playing with the Japanese VA pack, and the dialogue and story feels less stupid in Japanese for some reason. Also, the Japanese VA for Lightning seems much more suitable.
All the DLC equipment feels overpowered so far.
I had no idea the aggregate was so low. That's really dismal. Considering developers do look at review aggregates, SE must be highly disappointed (unless they expected it, although I doubt they expected that low).
dude, it's called moving the goalposts
Magnificent. I have to admire how they managed to pull this out of context, despite the fact that Kotaku's review ends up bashing the game.
Being happy with a 67 is pretty sad.

It's not "bad" per see, but I think we can (almost) all agree that we expected better from a Final Fantasy game. All things considered, including the rather short development time and bad rep surrounding the trilogy, this game comes off with a honorable score.
Oh well, we will have to see if FFXV can redeem the franchise (at least in my eyes). They can't possibly do worse... OK, that's tempting fate. They certainly can do worse, but considering the team in charge we can expect a decent to very good game.
