Played almost 10 hours so far. I really don't get the negative response (was to be expected though).

Some random thoughts:

Pros:
-Battle system is exciting! Some tough battles that require good planning, strategy and execution. One of the series' best battle system.
-Customization system is deep, it's really fun and addictive to mess around the garbs, weapons, abilities. I was surprised by the amount of different shops and fusion systems that add to the whole experience.
-Amazing soundtrack. The quality, quantity and variety of tracks has no equal. With some of XIII and XIII-2's tracks used here and there, we've got 12 CDs of music used in the game. The wandering musicians are a really nice touch.
-Some of the areas are huge and actually filled with content.
-I thought the clock system would be annoying but it's a welcome change of pace. The EP management adds a bit of strategy and it's totally possible to do everything you want anyway.
-Cutscene direction is cool. Some very stylish FMVs so far.
-Lightning's nonchalant reactions to NPC's requests are hilarious. A bit of self-conscious comedy is exactly what this game needed.

Neutral:

-Same thing for the writing. I liked XIII/XIII-2's, but for those who didn't, it's more of the same here. I can definitely see how the over-the-top, serious feeling and Hillis' stilted delivery might turn away people.

-The way they tried to implement a kind of "sandbox" feel to the game is a bit weird. They didn't quite pull it off and we have some weird annoyances as a result. NPC AI paths are all wrong, the cities never feel "alive" as a result.
-The Assassin's Creed "stealth" section was laughable.
-The in-game graphics are rough. Environments feel dated and the game as a whole looks worse than FFXIII which came out 4 years ago.
-Pretty much all of the sound design is rehashed from XIII.
-I like the shop and menu UIs, but the HP/EP/ATB thingy is kinda ugly.
-4.99$ for Yuna's costume? No thanks. Should've been in the game.
-Villain so far isn't convincing. Caius was much more intriguing.

Looking forward to the rest of the playthrough. In the end it does feel like more of a spin-off than a mainline FF. It's still a solid and very enjoyable RPG.

Although I haven't played as far as you, my impressions so far are pretty positive. I think the more action style gameplay is a breath of fresh air for the XIII trilogy and is making the game more fun than it would have been if they just recycled the same battle system again. And yes, there is a lot of potential for the customization. My feeling is that SE should allow this deep kind of customization for all of the characters in Final Fantasy moving forward, or at least something close to this. I know this isn't going to happen, but that kind of player agency would bring a lot of goodwill back to a mainline FF title that has a big budget production like XV.

Only played 4 or so hours but so far your post is spot on.

The timer does make me nervous tho but we'll see I guess. Managed to secure an extra day on my first return to the ark...

Are you playing it at normal or easy mode? Do you see the doomsday clock a possible early game over for you or you think you'll be able to do most of it before the end?

It's really an FFXIII title. Lots of 8s but also lots of 7s. I dismiss any other score below that though. Good game, just not a masterpiece?

Judging by my playtime so far, yeah. It's solid, I think you're gonna like it. At this point it's just about what appeals to you individually.

By far my favorite part of the game. I love tweaking stats, bonuses, weapons, accessories, etc. It's so awesome. The costume changes are nice, too. I always liked a visual representation of new gear on characters. If FFXV has this system in place for every character, that's like, a whole point in its favor.

Also...guess HD towns weren't that impossible after all, eh? The town layout, sans the stupid time locked gates, was pretty neat.

All in all, this game is rough, but it's by far the best thing with FFXIII on it and it shows that SE is looking at how it fucked the series up and are trying to wrangle it back into some semblance of the FF games we know.

If nothing else, I feel as if LR is a good sign that FFXV is going to be legitimately good.

Potentially a good game indeed, though I fear it has a lot of flaws. At least everyone seems to agree that the battle system is rather good.
Also, kudos on respecting your bet. I disagree with you most of the time, but I can respect a man who keeps his word.

Readjust your expectation, because I don't believe equipment will change character appearance directly in FFXV. Though I think there's a chance there would be alternative outfits strictly for aesthetic purposes, some obtainable in-game and mostly via DLC, like what the Tales series does.

But Tales does it with DLC, mostly. Also, I hate the Tales series....so....nah. Gonna be wildly optimistic for FFXV anyways. It's still like, 8 years away so they'll have plenty of time to make adjustments!

Yeah, judging by how much style and importance was put into the cast of characters' appearance, I doubt they will change physically. In fact, I bet the game might bet back to just using relics and rings as equipable items, besides the main weapon.

I'm not, because it's a rarity and when playing a game for 40+ hours, it's great to have a change up every so often. It's cool in practice and execution. It's super silly to gain New Armor of the Fallen God King and you're still in the scarf and shortpants combo from your humble village or whatever.

My Shulk had never looked more manlier in his briefs whilst wielding the Xenoblade. And Sharla, boy howdy did she have the goods.

There are sensible ways that changing equipment can be designed. They could adapt specific pieces of clothing/armor for each character that goes with their general aesthetic. I agree that Xenoblade was quite ridiculous at moments, although there was some cool stuff to be had. It would be nice though to have some kind of adaptability in armor though for main characters.

Is it though? Seems pretty side story ish, like FF X-2. Aren't mainline titles considered the proper FF1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. 10, etc? It doesn't have a party, it's a prologue story and it's even got a side story title. Doesn't feel or sound like a mainline title to me.

That has more to do with Xenoblade though. If the armor design is decent, it's not a problem.
 
If 67/100 is better than what you guys expected...exactly how badly did you expect this game to do? It's 16 points lower than XIII and 12 points lower than XIII-2.

I had no idea the aggregate was so low. That's really dismal. Considering developers do look at review aggregates, SE must be highly disappointed (unless they expected it, although I doubt they expected that low).

What the...this picture is on the disc? So weird...I bet it'll just be the suit...no way they'd let the Waifu goddess look like that with a blocky head. Looks so...well, it's cancer patient Lightning.

I think I made it pretty clear what is and what isn't real. I just switched off the hair and changed some colors. It's some other garb normally available in the game, purple by default.
There's nothing hidden left on the disc because they officially announced everything that is referenced on the disc. If they decide to actually do post-release work on the game is another matter. I hope they don't and instead focus on something else.

Put a couple hours in yesterday, and it doesn't seem as bad as expected so far. I'm playing with the Japanese VA pack, and the dialogue and story feels less stupid in Japanese for some reason. Also, the Japanese VA for Lightning seems much more suitable.

All the DLC equipment feels overpowered so far.

Heard the JPN dub is superior from fluent-GAF. Lightning's VO is less shitty than Hillis at least. Heard Snow and Hope are still stupid tho.

Magnificent. I have to admire how they managed to pull this out of context, despite the fact that Kotaku's review ends up bashing the game.

Also, it's best to be wary of Metacritic in general. Relying only on scores can give a pretty limited view of a game: it's always best to read thorough tests.
