Myself as well. Sometimes I really just want to appear offline and game solo and don't want to deal with "social gaming". No idea why Sony is so adamant that this feature not be implemented.

It was a band-aid for not having the Friend Notifications in the first place.

Yep. If it can't be toggled or at least limited to just some friends, I am not using it.

That's actually better than the online notification. First, you get the party notification even if your friend simply creates a party consisting of no one but themselves. Basically, the notification tells you that friend is now ready to socialize. You can take a look at the party they've joined/created, and join at your discretion. That's more useful than simply knowing that same friend came online, because maybe they're just grabbing some DLC before work or something, and aren't really here to talk to anyone.

Speaking of parties though, I was also thinking an auto-party option might be cool. If Tom ticks Auto-Party on Dick's profile and Dick does the same for Tom, then the system automagically puts them in a party together when they're both online. When Dick's friend Harry comes online, it can put him in the party too, unless Tom has Harry blocked or something.
