LTTP: Dark Souls: That one Archer Sucks

I want to play it again one of these days. While it is my favorite of the entire series it's also the one I've played the least (while DS2 is my least fav but I've played that one the most). Last time I played it was probably when DS2 was announced.

A fond memory of my first play through was discovering Ash Lake before I've gotten the warp and or even beat Quelaag.

The other games in the series all have some things that they do better, but I think Dark Souls is hands down the best one. The world design alone is almost enough to make it that for me. But it also feels the most crafted, has the best NPCs, best Estus system, Poise that is actually useful, best music etc.

4 Kings gets nasty in NG+ / NG++.

And have fun with the last DLC Boss
shout out to my boy Manus
. Challenging but fun fight. Try to breathe.

To this day I've never solo'd Smough and Ornstein. I feel ashamed.

I surprisingly managed on my Solaire build (where I killed Solaire (thus no summon) for his armor, I apologize for my sins SoulsGAF) by sniping Smough with Lightning Spears and taking down Ornstein by poking him with a blessed blade while never leaving their personal space which caused thrm to not hit me when I was positioned right.

Had to pop 6 humanities for it, but surprisingly enough in the end I did manage.

I´ve owned Dark Souls for a couple of years now and always played for a bit, got stuck somehow or frustrated, and put it back on the shelf for a while.

I also have the tendency to delete old saves and start over, so I´ve been playing the Undead Burg section for at least 8 times already.

During each attempt at the game, I always learn something new, like how upgrading weapons works, how to get to certain parts of the games earlier, how to distribute stats etc.

I started a new Knight save a couple of days ago and then just for the hell of it started yet ANOTHER file as a sorcerer. Finding that smith hidden in the New Londo Ruins, making a magic weapon, farming for green titanite shards in Blighttown...

...I learn something new EVERY time I play the game. There´s always some way to make the run different. By now I should be burned out by attempting this game so many times, but it´s like I´m not just making progress in the game, but learning new stuff ABOUT the game.

And that feeling when I beat the bell gargoyles on my first attempt when those gave me so many problems back when I first played the game... It´s such a rush.

I don´t think I´ve ever had so much fun with the first few hours of a game. I´m actually enjoying it MORE than the more often I play it, not less. That´s the sign of a brilliant game right there. Feeling confident and knowing stuff about the game after being in the dark about many of the systems and secrets for so long is very satisfying.

What's a good weapon to play through the game with? I started with a Battle Axe +5 but I've moved onto the Zweihander. Think I'd prefer something quicker though.

I just started a new play through yesterday. I think this is my 3rd or 4th. I've never beaten Ornstein & Smough, but I feel good about this time.

As much as I do like the game, I have to admit, I kind of wish it wasn't always so opaque.

I had to rush the first Archer. That's the only satisfying way of taking card of that issue. I made sure to eat a bowl of Wheaties before the rush.

I still need to beat Dark Souls one of these days. I always beat one of the Lord Souls bosses (usually the Bed of Chaos or Seath) and then I just sorta lose interest and stop. And then months later I'll play it but start a new character because I wanna try a new build or something.

Dark Souls feels very front-loaded in terms of quality, with the early and mid-game areas being the most fun. I'm really not a fan of Lost Izalith, the Crystal Cave, or the Tomb of the Giants. Meanwhile, I adore the Undead Burg, the Depths, Anor Londo, Sen's Fortress, pretty much every area except Blighttown (because dat framerate on console).

I did it on my first playthrough, and on hard mode where you have to kill Smough first. Git gud, scrub.

I did it solo with no upgraded Estus and no kindled bonfires. In fact, I completely forgot that was a thing so I finished the entire game without upgrading my Estus or kindling a single bonfire.

Just finished the spider queen and have entered Sen's Fortress. Where am I in the game?

About to begin the second arc of the game.

Sen's is one of the best parts of the game, it's probably the funniest too. The enemies have as much trouble with the fortress as you do, which can be hilarious.

I just watched a snakeman start to walk towards me down a corridor. Out of nowhere an Indiana Jones boulder took him out in a flash. I jumped them laughed.

EDIT: Found it. Even that was a joke of a place to place one. Ugh. lost 15k souls along the way.

Good luck with Kalameet OP!

Also I really recommend (to everybody) to play the game while online. A huge part of the challenge of the game is dealing with invaders. Many times I have been invaded and lay in wait for the unsuspecting fool running around my game thinking they're going to cause me grief.....oh the surprises I had in store for them. Just makes me giggle with glee catching these would be miscreants. Muhahahah ahahah ahahah

Smough and Ornstein are definitely doable solo, and I say this as someone who isn't very good at these games. I've only taken out Ornstein first, but super Smough is pretty manageable if you take it slow.

"definitely doable solo"?! It is a requirement that every boss be beaten solo, if you haven't done so then you haven't beaten the boss. Simple. Nothing can be learned by summoning help.

Of course it's doable solo. I played the entire game without any help.

They took many, many tries for me though. Easily the hardest boss in the game.

I never summon any NPCs or other players during my first playthrough. That stuff is saved for subsequent runs for me.

This feels like such an empty game with no online components (PC version still borked?). Maybe it's just Anor Londo. Fucking this empty trek back to the buttress with the archers shooting...

Agreed. So far only Demon's comes close, but Dark Souls 1 is the perfect, finished article that I doubt FROM will ever beat.

DS1 was the first one I beat, but I'd put it tied for 3rd in the series personally. BB > DS1=DS3 > DeS >>> DS2. DS1 is probably the most memorable one though.

It is a requirement that every boss be beaten by farting on a guitar hero controller. If you haven't done that then you haven't beaten the boss. Simple. Nothing can be learned by playing with a gamepad.

I'm debating getting DS2 or 3 after this one. Why is DS2 so disliked? Is it only because it isn't a tightly made metroidvania? Friend says more builds are viable.

The level design isn't as strong and the combat feels different in some ways. A lot of DS1 fans don't like it, but I personally think it's a great game.

Thing is, I think Dark Souls 1 has much higher highs than Dark Souls II but it also has lower lows. DS2 is more consistent overall, in my view.

It also has amazing DLC. I'd recommend the Scholar of the First Sin version of the game, which has all the DLC integrated into the game.

Those two had me blocked for the longest time on my Cestus only run. I had over a hundred deaths on that fight alone. Took me 2 weeks of off and on play to finally beat them. The sense of satisfaction when I finally beat them was the best.

Yes yes yes. I absolutely agree, I'm just surprised by some people here saying they've never tackled them solo and have no regrets etc. There are other Souls bosses that scare me more, S&O just take a long time hehe.

But DS3 is so pretty. Haha

Dark Souls 2 is well worth playing. Might as well just play them in order.

I beat them while fat rolling!

I can't do it. I can't get through these archers. I'm a sword and board magic missile hybrid motherfucker and I just can't. The one on the right just point blank arrows me and I can't even get a sword hit on. I can't soul arrow because the arrows hit me first and kill me (plus the area of lock on is so fucking miniscule compared to these snipers). I can't seem to roll past them to get to wherever. Going for the left archer is suicide since the one on the right gets a direct shot on me.

Time to look at a video.

Poison arrows work wonders here. You'll have to aim high to compensate for gravity, and it takes a several hits to poison the archers, but two cycles of poison will kill each one. It was the only way I could ultimately get through.

I feel like I'm going blind from my rising blood pressure. Like, this is trash game design. This is retroactively making me hate video games. Fuck supporting these trash developers with their subsequent games.
