They took a really long time developing it and it's the most linear FF ever with a big lack of sidequests compared to past entries. Also is it shorter compared to past games? Or maybe the length of time the story takes place over is much shorter, makes it feel less epic.
Not really shorter, it just has whole sections/chapters where pretty much nothing worthwhile happens, or the events that do happen are underdeveloped and could've been condensed into another chapter.

Characters were awesome, I really didn't have a problem with any of them. Sure Hope was a little whiny, but he was a kid and I could relate to his plight.
Have you had conctact with another human being in the last ten years.

OMG best sidequest EVAR

OP: how did you feel about XII?
i dug the battle stuff mostly, music and transitions were great...characters had their moments, i thought acts 6-9 or so were pretty good
sazh with gun to vanllle's head in the rain was a pretty tense scene
but i hated how they had me start to dig lightning then just kinda gave up on telling me about her, or anything in vanille's village (which was really a great setting, with that music), and yeah, the endgame shat all over itself plotwise which makes it hard to stand out in my head as being a really solid entry.

its not nearly as bad as GAF/others give it, i think, but im not sure if it makes my top 5 FF games of all time, its close though.

This will end in tears.

Anyway, I thought XIII was OK, and certainly not as bad as GAF makes it out to be (besides Hope and Snow). But XII wasn't only a better FF game, but one of the best games I've ever played.

XIII was one of the greatest art portfolios of all time. I think the story scenario design was gold ("cocoon and pulse"), the level artstyles were the some of the best in gaming, and the music was post-modern originality....

I just think that they utterly failed in stitching these "assets" into a game. The development process has been confirmed to be a rush job though Famitsu interviews. Most of the development was spent developing the Crystal Tools.. and those beautiful art assets. The "game" itself was not really begun until 2008 apparently.. (This was years after XIII had first shown trailers, keep in mind.) when they focused their resources on developing a thrilling battle system, because it was too late to craft any kind of sophisticated level design....

I enjoyed FF13 a lot.

It gets too much hate, but then I remember this is GAF.

Even Uncharted 2 and MGS4 are hated on here, even if the majority of the community voted them for GOTY!

I'd like to jump in on the FF13 love, or whatever is going on in here. I liked the battle system because it allowed me to do a lot of cool stuff with minimum effort. The linear story line meant I always knew where to go next. And while I thought the story was just okay, it kept me interested until the end and seemed like a genuine effort by Square-Enix to appeal to a western market.

My increasingly busy days mean my video game hobby is turing into a form a relaxation, and I could relax while playing Final Fantasy 13. I haven't liked an FF game this much since I played 8.

(Since I liked 2, 8, and 13 does that make me a weirdo?)

I had likes and dislikes with this game. On one hand, I didn't really like the story and dialog, or the linearity, or the lack of traditional towns but on the other I thought the battle system was one of the best ever in an RPG. The paradigm shifting is really fun, especially in harder boss battles. The art, sound and production values are all top notch as well. Overall I wouldn't call it an amazing game like some of its predecessors, but it's still a really good game.

My main issue with the game is that it wasn't a game. There isn't one single part of it's interactivity that isn't broken and braindead, you can't find a dumber RPG than this.

Largely It's for people who want to oogle the pretties, which is OK, except it wasn't really as pretty as I was expecting either. :p Doesn't help that the creative spark in just about every part of the fluff bits felt so ridiculously hollow. Halfway between fetish and focus group. They didn't know what they wanted to do, so they hit their own tropes so hard it became self-parody.

Maybe XIII-2 will be better, if it's really real. X-2 should be, by all merits, absolutely terrible, instead it's XIII done right. It's still embarrassing schlock, but it plays well!

Yeah, I really hated it. The battle system (I'd say "auto-pilot" is pretty accurate) and the hyper linear environments are what did it in.

I think I could have gotten into (or through) this game if there were no cutscenes and dialogue was text-only. I can't remember the last time I experienced any media so completely sabotaged by mere voice acting.

Put me in the FFXIII was great camp. :) I need to start a new play through.
Not in an RPG game. Explorations (literally non-existent), sidequests (uninteresting and boring), story (this needs no explanation), characters (with the exception of Lightning and fang, the rest can burn in hell for all I care), poor design choice (switching between characters & the summons looked ridiculious).

Oh lord, this. I can honestly say Vanille ruined the whole game for me. Everytime I hear her talk I want to bitch slap her to get her to shut the fk up. Her voice has been so sexualized it felt like she got a dildo stuck up her ass the entire game. The way she laughs, giggles, and moans. It was terrible.

Nah that was MGS4.

Seriously though, the game may be a disappointment. All those years and we got something with less "game" then FFX.

How do horseshit statements like this even get to exist. I mean honestly, can you give at least one example of how there could be any truth to this statement? This is obnoxious level hyperbole..

The game took my 70 hours to finish, I agree with many here that the Pulse hunting was one of the nest parts. I spent a lot of time just exploring the world.

OP I agree with everything in your post.

Right up until you mentioned the ending. Worst ending to any game ever. Also the bosses sucked for the most part in this game. Top 5 of all time? I wouldn't say top 50 this gen. It isn't a great game, but it's a pretty good one.
I get your first point, but terrible bosses? I thought a lot of them were pretty sweet,
Dahaka, Cid, and Proudclad were my favorites.

My least favorite Final Fantasy and my most regretted purchase of 2010. I hated everything about the game except the gameplay, graphics and music, but in the end I could not pull myself together to finish the game. The characters were shit with the exception of Lightning and Fang. Vanille......is my most hated video game character ever. I hated everything about her. If I could have muted her for the whole entire game I might have been able to finish the game. The story was shit. This was the first JRPG that I've played that required the player to switch between characters and quite frankly, I fking hated it. Dumb decision. It's a shame that a game with such great gameplay mechanics was packaged into such a poorly designed game. No exploration? F u Square-Enix.

Why all the hate for Vanille? I loved her upbeatness, and her twist kept her intriguing.

Definitely agree with you on that Sazh scene; had me yelling at my TV.

Dude, that's exactly what I told a buddy the other day. Word by word.

I'm doing the game those days too, and feel kinda mixed about it.
The game is absolutely gorgeous, some characters are nice, but Sahz and Vanille are so fucking incredibly annoying ! I choke every time I see that there's a passage where I have to play with them.
Their story is useless, don't fit, and is really not inspiring compared to the other part of the story line ...

Loving the fighting system so far, pretty refreshing. It lacks a bit of specialisation in character classes, but it's pretty interesting.

The cutscenes are totally incredible.
The music can go fuck itself. The same shitty voice-track playing during nearly 10 of the 20 hours of the beginning of the game killed me ...

Overall, the tone of the game is really too ... light I think. Characters are too much happy-going (blame Sahz, Vanille and Snow).

But the game still has very high production values that make me come back to see what's next.

Will see how the rest of the game goes.

FFXIII is to RPGs what Wii sports is to sports games.

If you're looking for that sorta thing you'll be happy, but otherwise... no way in fucking hell.

Not the most popular opinion perhaps, but I don't care.
It actually seems like fans of XIII are generally not fans of XII and vice versa. Makes sense since they're polar opposites.

I wouldn't say 'polar opposites.'

One sucks, and one sucks a little less cause you're not running through a hallway through the entire game.

Heh, you and me both. There's actually a decent chance my love of XIII comes from my hatred of XII. There is absolutely no way I can make an unbiased opinion about either of these.

I like XIII and XII a lot.

XII is great. I like the customization that comes from setting up your party and gambits. It offers a lot of in-depth party management, which is a plus. I like how detailed and interesting the world is. It feels like a place thanks to the history it has, pretty amazing. I also like how the world is connected and how big the zones are, it adds to the sense of being an actual world. I do like some of the characters and parts of the story. Parts of it are subtle and pretty well written, it's just that the story just loses steam. I also overall like the look of the game. I don't like that the characters really become pretty unimportant, because they are all pretty much the same. A big negative for me.

I also like XIII. The characters overall were far more likable then most jrpgs, I don't think I disliked any of them. The story loses it at the end, but I didn't dislike it before it. It was focused on its theme and I liked it. I do like the battle system, because it always felt tense and fast. It's like it can change any moment. I do like the fact that the characters have some importance and the party playstyle can change based on what your party is. The game may be linear, but that's fine with me honestly. I can take that every ounce in awhile. As long as the experience is fine that is, and for XIII it was.

Maybe make a Japanese game you dumb cunts, not a muddled, boring attempt at pleasing Westerners.

FFXIII is possibly the biggest un-western title out there.

Like I'm not sure how it's not very Japanese.

i forced myself through this game and nearly gave up console gaming because of it. FFXIII is an addict simulator, where you have a shitty wasted life, spending your dole money on Special Brew, drinking it the park with all your tramp mates and wondering why you even want to live anymore. Selling the game was like going into rehab.

Not saying you're wrong in enjoying the game, varied tastes are a good thing. I just ended up hating the living shit out of it.

Also, I remember reading Kitase being inspired by Western FPS games to make FFXIII or something.

The Pulse quests feels like a western RPG. The MMO quest log and all. They took two extremes in the same game. A completely guided linear experience and a completely open-ended MMO style questing.

Yes I remember the 1up interview, but that seemed to be more of an excuse like "hey yeah it's like CoD and not because we fucked up".

But other interviews (like the the post look in Game Developer mag I think) really seem to go against that. Didn't they mention that western feedback came late? It makes it seem that really the reason it came out this way was more because of management and the problems with it.
