LTTP: Resident Evil 4 (and the entire series)

I cant really appreciate the game too much-- I bought resident evil 4 for wii-- and everyone says its suppose to be easy with the wiimote controls-- but I cant get past the first 20 minutes-- i end up getting killed the first time i get to town. and I've tried 3 times-- I have no skill when it comes to its controls.
Had the same problem, but it was because I played the GC version to death. After sticking to it for a while ,I prefer the Wii version. Now I can't play RE5 without shaking my PS3 controller when I get grabbed by any enemy.:lol But yeah try what TheSeks suggested. Using the shotty on groups also helps.

Well you could always use a standard control pad and see if you fair any better with that (I know it has a Gamecube Controller option, not sure about the Classic Controller though).

As far as I’m concerned it’s 100% perfect and the pinnacle of videogames! <3

Nailed it.

ETA: Okay, one of the pinnacles. Super Mario 64 is pretty bloody fantastic too...except without the blood.

4-2: Yay villagers! I prefer them to the monks! Except for chainsaw guy arrgh! Fighting two giants was way hard since they were buffed up over the old ones. One got dumped and the other ate up a whole magnum rounds and all of my green grenades -.- Then lots and lots of bugs. They weren't tough but still took awhile ta clear out.

4-3: Haven't seen bear traps in awhile and they still hurt! So do chainsaw guys and other baddies that appear outta nowhere. Mine cart riding is rough riding since I didn't even bother to try and snipe dudes on platforms cause I woulda just missed anyway.

4-4: Lotsa dying in the first room thanks to crossbow guys and others sneaking up on me and me not realizing the room was 3 stories tall for the longest of time. Giant statue chase was weird... Climbing up to the top of the tower was hard but it was fun using those exploding barrels on some of the dudes. Died on the way up cause of crossbows once still got hit by them but made it up the second time. Lost many lives to that kid but eventually brought him down with the rifle! Using a launcher wouldn't have seemed right.

After all of this time playing I'd totally forgot there was a second disc! You all say the toughest parts have passed but then I got mowed down by guy with a giant gun which made it time to quit for the day...

Don't hoard ammo, use it! I've gotten so good at it I often find throughout the game I find that I actually have way too much ammo and health and have to toss some.

I am a hoarder! I can't help it! And while I'm not good I currently have 4 first aid sprays, 6 g/r mixtures, 2 g/g mixtures and a regular green herb cause I'm to cheap to use items unless I'm actually getting somewhere in a major fight >_<;

You're not supposed to stick to an area.

I still keep sticking to one place in battles and often end up killed from behind. Stupid super close camera perspective! Stupid me!

TwinIonEngines said:
Protip: Usually only the capacity upgrades reload your ammunition. However, every final "exclusive" upgrade gives you a full load of ammo, even if it's not for the ammo capacity attribute.

Waaaah! I needed this tip way earlier! My shotgun/rifle/butterfly are all fully capacity upgraded already!

Salazar isn't very tough at all after you figure out his pattern. Easier than Bitores IMO.

Lindsay don't read this until you get past Chapter 5-1:
I can't wait to read her reaction when she gets to

It's gonna be brlliant :lol

I finally played RE5 last week. Went the co-op route with a friend. It was really fun. But no, it isn't nearly as good as RE4. It kind of confused me at first as to why I wasn't all that impressed with it since it everything is solid and barely diverges from the successful RE4 formula. Reflections:

- It lacks any novelty. The gameplay engine is essentially the same. The weapons are the same. The method of progression is the same. The enemies and bosses feel like retreads.
- RE4 was exceptional for its time. RE5, both with respect to gameplay and graphics, didn't try to break any ground and for this reason can't impress like RE4 did.
- The environments aren't nearly as interesting. Small village and castle >>> everything in RE5.
- The story was more neatly integrated with the enemies and environments. In RE5 the enemies often seem out of place. I rarely 'bought' their role in the story.
- The RE5 inventory system was a step backwards. In some ways it was better (assigning weapons to slots for quick swapping), but the small size meant that I was constantly managing items. The lack of an expansion was also a disappointment. I actually think this design flaw had everything to do with the inclusion of co-op and the need for two inventories on one screen.
- Level design was just not as interesting.

I'm probably exaggerating certain differences. But the fact is that RE5 really only tweaked the RE4 experience while not adding anything too interesting. Certain bosses and sequences were interesting and a step forward, but overall it didn't really engage me like RE4 did.

And yeah, RE4 is one of the best games of all time. So it's really no surprise that RE5 was such a disappointment.

Its hard to replicate the impact that a genre redefining game has, especially when its a game like RE4 that completely reinvented Survival Horror.

My TV zoom option >> the game zoomed widescreen

I ended up playing it in 4:3 with no zoom and it looks good now, even if it feels like I'm "wasting" more than half the screen [gray and black bars everywhere] :lol

Anyway, FUCK YOU MENDEZ!
His second form kills me in on hit with my health almost full [playing on professional]... =\

5-1: Another freaking long one! lol mini-gun guy can't climb ledges = death by rifle from just a couple feet above! Why are so many guys spawning parasite heads... oh ya nearing the end of the game. My inventory is so stuffed with healing items and ammo I'm having to drop or leave behind grenades! I still hate crossbow guys they always get me and even with this fancy new vest a shot takes 3 bars of health! Whats with the giant biker looking guys o.O? Noooo not automatic opening/closing doors the sound they make and the fact that I don't know if its me making them work or some unseen enemy makes me hate 'em! A crane mini-game? I suck at those! Regenerating guy with spikes? Just end my suffering already! Shoot crow, gain 300 moneys? I'ma smash all these comm tower windows for all the crap they've put me through, have fun paying that bill! Oh nuts I'm attached to Ashley again...

@ 18 hours now. Really taking my time and being extra paranoid cause until the battle music dies down ya just know there's more enemies somewhere! I dunno if I can take much more but after all these years I want closure!

My reaction?! "oh gawd get away from me get away why won't you die?? don't clobber me over the head arrggh!! this is like those leech guys super run away!!" back in the hallway "uh who's laughing and why?" carefully creep around the corner only to see another immortal guy "stop throwing me against enemies I can't kill but can kill me! *dies*

Did you get the scope in the freezer room?

Yes eventually after many wasted ammos and health stuff (which is just as well since it takes up a buncha inventory slots) and deaths and then when I got it another one appeared and attacked which was unpleasant! I beat like I guess 3 of them and one of the spikey guys. Hitting those specific points isn't easy. Leon needs some of that calming stuff Snake uses to slow down the dang gun/arm movements!

I love it when you blow their legs away thinking "phew.. that should stop them", only to see them jump around like fishes and moving even faster! So god damn scary.

You think you're bad about hoarding?

I'm about to leave for the island with the following:

Red 9 with 10 + 95 bullets
Striker with 15 + 25 shells
TMP with 200 + 475 bullets
Butterfly with 0 + 21 bullets

6 grenades, 4 flash, 1 incendiary
7 first aid sprays
1 RGY herb, 1 RG herb, 1 GG herb and 7 individual greens
1 gold egg, 1 brown egg

No empty spaces. I guess I could free up 6-8 squares by combining herbs, I'm probably going to have to when I want to buy a rifle.

The chat with Saddler when you get to the island is so goddamn awesome. "I hate to break it out to you", "disillusioned with overconfidence", "You're small-time", and "Writhe in my cage of torment" all in one conversation. Absolutely amazing.

So I've played a bit more and reached the castle. Jeez, this game is kind of stressing me out. In a good way. Not Silent Hill levels of course but there is A LOT of tension. Also the difficulty is higher than I imagined. (Yes, I'm seriously playing this the first time). I've only watched a friend play through it a couple of years ago and I hardly remember anything.

Not being able to switch weapon in real time is kind of a bummer nowadays. Not being able to reload in the inventory increases the tension I guess.

I haven't been able to play in the past couple days but hope to finish up this weekend if I can handle it.

I forgot to mention I screamed when some guy on fire came outta nowhere and attacked me >_< seriously wtf another genuine scare that was. I mean sure ALOT of guys come from seemingly nowhere and attack but this one was on fire and the room seemed damned empty to me!!

How come this game don't have item storage trunks? Sure that concepts kinda unrealistic but it sucks having to discard a item instead of dropping it or leaving it in a trunk. They could've let you leave stuff with the merchant... for a fee!

That's some nice stockpiling! Where is does Leon keep this mystical attache case anyway...?

YES. This game does put me into a state of super high tension. And not the good dragon quest kind, the exhausting kind!

This game is getting better by the minute. Really prefer the castle over the village.

Anyways, after the initial shock over the image quality of the Wii version with component cable + hdtv, I've done quite a bit of testing to get the best out of it.

- Set your Wii to 4:3 and let your TV zoom in. It does a better job than the game (at least in my case)
- Set TV type to 576i instead of 480p. The game indeed seems to run in a higher resolution when doing that. It reduces the jaggies and the dithering by a good margin. Only downside is that the game will run slightly slower because it uses 50hz now (I don't know if US Wii consoles actually have that option)

I like the iq now! Not zooming in with 4:3 might be an option if you have a huge TV.

5-2: Ashley got killed right off the bat but on the next try I was able to get out of the room and move along. Buncha more regenerating guys in this one which I hate!! Then another vehicle segments which was failed twice. Overall not to bad and thankfully not long!

5-3: Death by lasers, freakish boss, and so much more. Running around like a chicken with my head cut off waiting for a stupid door to open, this tough dude to get off my back and collect some dumb puzzle pieces! My dodging an everything else sucks so beating the boss was so so painful.

5-4: Hiding while other people do my work for me? Sounds great! Except he didn't spare me the onslaught of giant gun guys! There was a super regenerator that killed me it leaped at me like no other and my aim was especially bad =_= Which led to fighting even more guys afterwards which took some tries.

Final Chapter: This boss wasn't so bad, prolly woulda been less hurty if I had used the fully upgraded butterfly instead of the shotgun... oh well! Some item organizing and discarding led to one super rocket launcher victory! And then failure during the escape once e.e;

Those end credits were surprisingly short. The music was good like all RE credits but not top tier I'm afraid.

I didn't think I could do it and wanted to quit many times! All of the tips an reassurance an some help from guides now and then helped push me through though! GAF Voted and got what it wanted and so my failure backlog is much less fail now! Overall I had lotsa bad times but lotsa good ones now. Dunno if I could ever replay cause I'd still freak out and get Leons head handed to me on a silver platter however it was a pretty great ride!

Mission complete~

Hit ratio 78%
Enemies killed: 893
Number of times killed: 105
Clear time: 23:14'28"
Number of saves: 73

I thought the super gun and infinite launcher were give to you for free but they're way expensive >.< It'd take a whole other playthrough to earn enough money for the launcher!!

Congratulations though!

Now you can move to the good part.. Mercenaries!!

See? I wasn't overexaggerating how crappy I am! And still no to other modes!

I did however load up a round two game and finally made it through that opening area without damage thanks to magnum/rifle. Sweet sweet revenge. Then I kept playing and made it all the way to the lake boss with relative ease (no deaths!) but then I stopped and fired into the lake and let it eat me and quit cause I gots a backlog to take care of!

You really should fire up mercenaries a bit and try the other characters. Wesker is so bad ass.

What I want to know is how a helicopter can
sneak up on a group of enemies and they only realize it's there when it's knocking over their water tower

Awesome!

Being drowned, church tentacle wolves (since I just ran right by them), Luis, cable car, swinging blades, spike ceiling, dragged into lava pit, crushed by statue, wrecking ball, shooting Ashley (wtf), post-knife maniac battle explosion, island explosion were all new to me! That 12/83 according to the comments count. Cutscene dodging did me in many times cause I'd sit back and watch and not see it coming!

Mercenaries is like a little time trial where you need to get as much kills before time runs out.

4 Stages, one is a new area, with a new miniboss and 5 different playable characters.

You can even use a bow!

I love the Waterworld level...but I absolutely hate the new miniboss that comes with it. I always get careless around him and it's instant death. :(

Hm... I'm probably a third to half-way through REmake and I'm starting to realize that I'm just not really having fun with this game that much. I mean, the back-tracking is pretty bad (although, I stopped halfway on Zero and the backtracking in REmake isn't nearly as bad as it was in Zero) and Crimson Heads really suck, especially when I'm like "I'll make a mental note to go back to the save room and get the equipment to burn this body. *10 minutes later* Hey, wasn't there something I was supposed to do in-HOLY SHI-". Hell, I was even starting to fall asleep at one point, as I would have to back-track to a storage box to activate something to get something in order to get to some door that I forgot about around an hour ago.

Will I finish it? Most likely. Why? I have no fucking idea.

Sounds like the game is doing its job to me.

Round 2 complete~

Hit ratio 82%
Enemies killed: 963
Number of times killed: 8
Clear time: 11:02'43"
Number of saves: 18

Did I improve?

Death 1: village chief, went in with to low of health missed a shot an he got me
Death 2: water room, trying to save ashley an got snuck up on and maced to death
Death 3: el gigante, the one I dropped in the lava somehow pulled me in O.o
Death 4: knife fight
Death 5: knife fight
Death 6: knife fight
Death 7: knife fight
Death 8: lasers!

3 deaths due to carelessness and 5 to stupid dodging actions.

I dunno what came over me. I picked the game up friday really really wanting that infinite launcher but not having even close to enough money. Something clicked in my head and my mission was clear. Not no one not nothing was gonna give me trouble!! Everything that previously gave me trouble was blown through, I sniped everyone on the gondola, beat the right hand & salazar with the magnum, got hit by bow guys only a few times, regenerating dudes weren't a problem since I had the scope from the previous game, it all just came together! It wasn't until 5-2 that I had enough money to get the infinite launcher since through the course of the game I bought and fully upgraded Red 9 & Striker but boy was it worth the wait!

I feel much more satisfied with the game now ^.^ Maybe someday down the line I'll give RE5 a try!

RE5 sadly might just sully your experience with RE4. Unless you're a HUGE fan of the series it's probably best just to quit while you're ahead. Time for that RE4 pro run? :D

Just ended my first playthough of this on the Wii.

Finished it in like 21 hours with 26 deaths and some 860 odd enemies killed. It's outside the usual types of games that I play, but I found it really solid and I'm glad that I gave it a shot. It wouldn't end up on any type of top X list for me, but that's mostly because I'm a bit of a wuss and even an "action" style Resident Evil was a little unsettling and nerve wracking for me. I recall the burning zombie in the lab, Krauser hiding around a corner, the final regenerator in the prison and a few other incidents all giving me quite a scare.

The highlight was the shooting mechanics combined with the Wiimote aiming. All through out my 20 hours it was fun and satisfying to pop off heads with a good clean shot. Plus weapon selection was really nice and they all had really good visual and audio feedback to use. You can tell that Capcom really took the time to even make stuff like the reload animations look really slick.

The downside, will I actually though it overstayed its welcome a little bit. Fighting a mob of standards in the village is much the same as fighting one in the lab near the end. All the same basic tactics work just fine so by the end of my playthrough I was pretty much just looking forward to the bosses as I was getting bored with the standard combat with the infected. Also, not a big deal for me, but I was skipping cutscenes before halfway though the game, just not worth the time and attention to follow what is going on in the bizzare story.

You're dead to me.

Only kidding, but if you were trying to follow the story you were doing it wrong. The cutscenes might not be the graphical showcases that they were in 2005, but I think they still have some really cool moments and bits of silly dialogue that will be remembered for a long time to come. Something something you're small time something.

I still love Code Veronica, one of the best alongside REmake/classic RE and RE2, if I was only allowed 3 games of the series it would be those 3.

The Chris entry will be scared into my brain forever, most wtf and dramatic moment ever in a RE game :lol

OK, big bug/glitch just happened...

I have been upgrading Leon's health bar through the game... by the time I got to the garden labyrinth, the bar was way above half.

Then it's time to rescue Ashley [I haven't spent a single green herb on her]. So I get to the chapter where I'm controlling her and she appears with Leon's health bar (or at least really close to it).

After Leon and Ashley get back together, Ashley's [normal half circle] bar is almost fully upgraded and Leon's is back at the beginning (like in the village when you start the game).

I saved the game without realizing it first (a monk killing me with one grab made me aware)...

WTF? Anything like this happened to any of you?

That is a strange glitch, never heard of that before. What system do you have?

By the way I'm playing through again with the infinite rocket launcher and Chicago typewriter, very satisfying to mow everything down. :D

I just started replaying RE4 today, not had it for a couple of years, don't remember what happened to it, and I traded in some games today, saw it and picked it up on PS2. It's every bit as incredible as I remember. I'm really not a fan of the series, I think RE4 is the only 'great' one, but it is so amazing, can't wait to play more.

I've played through this game probably a good 25 plus times on the GC/PS2 versions and god knows how much time into mercenaries mode.

I just got a Wii the other day (my dad had one but literally, never unboxed for over a year so I yoinked it) and couldn't resist picking up the Wii version since its so damn cheap. Probably been a solid 2 years since I played through it but am already looking to diving in again.

Such a shame about 5. :(

KilgoreTrout and myself used to hold frequent races in re4... we'd set up two TV's next to each other and play it from beginning to end.

just to show how serious we were....

ix4dw4.png

GC version I have played beginning to end around 30 times... Wii version around 12 or so times. I am currently playing it through from beginning to end without skipping any cut scenes for my lady to enjoy. She likes watching (i'm serious).
