LTTP - The Mist

A couple of months back I was really feeling in a Cthulhu mood. Around the time a friend had mentioned The Mist, a movie I should have heard about when it was released, but for some inexplicable reason I didn't. A few weeks later I came across an article that stated the movie had some really awesome monster. Well, I just finished watching it and Holy Shit! This movie is awesome.

The whole thing is just bleak as hell, and I felt Darabont did a masterful job manipulating the audience not only with the characters, but with the pacing as well. I really wish I had seen this sooner as it would have explained how Frank Darabont went on to get involved with the Walking Dead.

I watched the color version on Blu-ray and the image was superb and crisp and the special effects hold amazingly well. Overall, a great movie for any horror fans.

To me this was a really gory and grotesque film that struck me harder and all the gore porn shit that Hollywood produces nowadays.

This was the first time in a long time that I cheered when a character got killed. That fucking bitch deserved the bullet to the head. Finally, I really enjoyed the ending. I mean it was truly heart breaking, but I'm glad that this movie stuck to it's guns and gave us one of the darkest endings just full of despair.

you should watch it in black and white. I love the ending, just wish it didn't end with that bullshit mother and her kid she saved because she went out of the supermarket.

I remember renting it and exceeding my expectations. It was one of those rare occasions when a movie blew me away. I went out the next day and bought it on Blu-ray. Love this freaking film.

Fantastic film, one of the best King adaptations for sure. I had no idea there was a black and white version. Is it on the Blu ray or do you just turn the color setting on your TV to 0?

Fantastic film.

Didn't Stephen King say he liked the ending of the movie better than the one he wrote for the novel?

It's a bit long winded, but perfectly fine. I get depressed by the opening scenes though because we'll likely never see a Dark Tower series.

Just checked my Blu-ray copy and it says you can play the movie in both color or black and white so no need to adjust your TV.

Yeah, I wish I would have seen it in theaters. Great film and I imagine the audience would have cheered at a certain part.

Ending was super bleak. And that
Giant monster walking in front of the truck, I felt the helplessness just watching that.

Team Carol.

Dead

well not really...yet
Yeah the B&W version is the definitive one for mood and atmosphere. It also makes a lot of the effects look much better.

In case people are wondering the ending of the book in comparison to the film:

Plays out pretty much the same. Leaving the market and going out in a car. They see a giant monster in the Mist and get scared for a bit. But they end up stopping in a building and while everyone is sleeping, the main character listens to the radio and hears a ton of static and only one word - Hartford. He takes everyone back into the car in the morning and they set out for Connecticut. End of the book.

While I liked it I saw the end coming a mile away and always felt the overall film was a little too close to being
Half-Life
The Movie.

Gonna have to hunt down the B/W version.

That's what was strange to me. How in the hell does the guy that directed the Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile go to something as bleak as the Walking Dead. Then I watched this and found the missing link. After this, The Walking Dead was the perfect next step. Also, Darabont has some really fucked up mind after seeing this.

Ollie was the best character hands down.

Really good film, loved how it paced with just the right amount of violence and slow terror. The ending
could have done without the silly reintroduction of the woman and her kid but the black comedy of everything that occured just moments before more than made up for it.

One of the few modern horror films to do it right.

Haven't seen it in a while, but I recall that you could really tell the story influenced Half-Life.
Never thought about it that way but good point. I was more reminded of Cloverfield being it was the last monster movie I had seen before The Mist.

If anything, this was probably the best H.P. Lovecraft movie without actually being an H.P. Lovecraft movie that I've ever seen.

Good movie, but the whole
crazy woman in the shopping centre
scenario dragged on way, way too long. It just felt forced to me.

Loved the ending though.

Dat ending. I was just like "What. WHAT. OH NO." Lol very good movie, I'll have to check out the black and white version, I was not aware of that either

Good movie but I was a little let down by how it ended. It was more crushing to the main character but a less bleak a message overall.

a friend also felt the same, mainly because he hated that character so much. I thought the character was pretty true to life and intentionally annoying. it makes the payoff so satisfying.

the ending fine in concept but the delivery is garbage.

What differences are there in the book for those who've read it? Or even maybe more exposition? I'll agree it's a great film, we watch it at least once a year, black and white.

Always wondered if they delve into the cause at all or any other hints

They talk about a portal in the movie at the military base, but nothing more. I know that's the point of the story that everything is just chaotic and nobody knows what's going on but I want to know more about this world.

Yeah I didn't much care for Cloverfield.

The Mist was so effective because you pictured this hypothetical "Dimension X" and you wondered what else was there.

Those spiders and giant walker things just...wow.

And what did those tentacles come from?

That and
the chubby dude shooting the crazy religious woman. He had the gun the entire time. He could have done that sooner! Dumbass!

I think it's fair game in a thread like this. Knowing what happens doesn't make it any less fun.

I figured but just in case I took care of it. I don't know why someone who hasn't seen something go into a LTTP thread about that thing.

That's one scary as fuck dimension. But it did make my imagination run wild.

Wasn't there big controversy over the ending, like the studio wanted a happier ending (of course) after focus testing but Darabont had a clause in his contract that dictated he had "final cut" on the production so we got the ending we got?

One of my favorite recent horror movies based on one of my long-time favorite short stories. I didn't go in expecting the movie to live up to my expectations, but it ended up exceeding them. Some of the highlights for me include the new ending, and the fact they did such a good job capturing the epic horror of the huge skyscraper-sized monster briefly mentioned in the book.

Some of the tentacle effects in the store were kinda iffy, but overall I really enjoyed how brutal it was.

Great movie.
