LTTP - The Mist

That's what was strange to me. How in the hell does the guy that directed the Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile go to something as bleak as the Walking Dead. Then I watched this and found the missing link. After this, The Walking Dead was the perfect next step. Also, Darabont has some really fucked up mind after seeing this.

Darabont got his start in horror. He wrote Nightmare on Elm Street 3, for example, along with The Blob remake, and did some episodes of Tales from the Crypt, I believe.

So it makes perfect sense that the guy who came up with the idea of pulling a kids tendons out of his body and puppeteering him off of a building could come up with the ending to The Mist :)

The movie does improve on the book in almost every way.

Not a surprise it tanked at the box-office. They released this thing right before Thanksgiving.

King said one of his major inspirations for the book were H.P. Lovecraft, of course, and Night of the Living Dead. Darabont, in order to keep the thing feeling as high-strung and tense as it does, basically got the crew that was working on The Shield at the time, and just went off and made a monster movie with them

Best ending ever. That took some balls. Also you can't fault the movie for not doing a good job making you hate the antagonist.

Wasn't there big controversy over the ending, like the studio wanted a happier ending (of course) after focus testing but Darabont had a clause in his contract that dictated he had "final cut" on the production so we got the ending we got?

I went to a pre-screening of it (Darabont attended) and we filled out the cards for the testing and many in the group I was with as well as quite a few movie goers who I overheard after were upset at the ending. It wouldn't surprise me.

That's one scary as fuck dimension. But it did make my imagination run wild.

Yes it did. I wanted more. I wanted to see more stories in that horrific environment with more horrific creatures. I guess in a way that's a good response though it's sad we'll never see any more. That premise would make for an interesting survival horror tv show.

One of my favourite horrors, and I am also a Lovecraft fan, you can see his footprints all over some of the creature design.

What I want to know is, re: the ending, how would the military so casually take back the area, with flamethrowers? The Mist was withdrawing but the portal must have been huge, how much came through?

How the fuck did they take down that giant fucker as well? That's the movie I wanted to see actually, that thing made the Cloverfield monster look small.

I read the book awhile before the movie was made, so I forget the ending at first. Enjoyed the movie, but the ending sticks with you. Seeing the huge walker was pretty cool as well.

I usually enjoy Frank Darabont's work and hated to see him leave/get booted off the Walking Dead. Laurie Holden was also chosen to be on the show because of her work with him in the past. Many of the people who were cast for the Walking Dead because they had worked with Darabont in the past. I think they have killed all of them off now though.

i think walking dead season 1 made me retroactively dislike this film. because it reuses the same shit actors, and they're tainted after watching that show.

the film itself though is pretty decent though, not that great but i did like the ending.

you should watch it in black and white. I love the ending, just wish it didn't end with that bullshit mother and her kid she saved because she went out of the supermarket.

That was kind of symbolically important though, if you didn't have that the ending would be very, very different.

in the mouth of madness is creepy as hell. definitely prefer it over prince of darkness which gets kind of goofy.

Yeah it has that 80's goofiness to some of it but It does bring it round to utter creepiness in the last 20 mins.

As for the Mist great movie I remember seeing this at the cinema and it was one of the best crowds ever as people were not sure what the hell was going to happen. And then that ending.

People leaving afterwards were exhausted. I think Darabont would have been happy people were really feeling it.

What differences are there in the book for those who've read it? Or even maybe more exposition? I'll agree it's a great film, we watch it at least once a year, black and white.

Always wondered if they delve into the cause at all or any other hints

They talk about a portal in the movie at the military base, but nothing more. I know that's the point of the story that everything is just chaotic and nobody knows what's going on but I want to know more about this world.
If you're interested in the other world, read the Dark Tower series and From a Buick 8. They tie in with the Mist and are quite enjoyable reads.

I worked at Blockbuster when this DVD came out. Man, people did NOT like that ending. I thought it was great, a happy ending is not always the best ending.

I was rather surprised by how many people hated the ending. I saw this movie in the theaters and recommended it to everyone I knew. Probably like 90% of the people I spoke to absolutely hated the ending. I loved it. I can't remember ever walking out of a theater feeling like shit like after The Mist. Was like someone just punched me in the stomach.

Fantastic movie still have it on Blu Ray. Very to the throat movie and you can feel the intense scene's like it's real same with Shawshank and Greenmile since it is Frank Darabont who directed also those other Stephen King movie's.

And Ms. Carmody...the hate gets in to you when you are watching the movie (so well played by Marcia Gay Haden). And yes that dat ending..never felt so miserable but so damn good.

To echo what others have said, it's an incredible movie and yes, the ending is like a punch to the gut.

Side note, the B&W version of the movie is superb. Really well done...

No one's mentioned him yet, but I felt so bad for the military kid :( That was one of the most horrifying scenes in the movie for me.

The ending, I actually had to laugh at it. It's amazing, but it's so uncomfortable to watch that I ended up howling with laughter.

That part was just as depressing as the ending. There were quite a few moments like that during the entire film. I just couldn't believe that they had gone ahead and left those scenes in what previously appeared to be a more mild film to me. I was on the edge of my sit, something that films of recent years have failed to do.

fantastic movie. Highly recommend the black and white version to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Actually, the origin of the book was King thinking of people being stuck in a grocery store and what the social dynamics would be like. All the monster stuff was just an excuse to trap the people there. The
military base and Project Arrow
were just designed to be McGuffins.

Didn't like it that much in theater, but loved it on my 2nd viewing.

I have the Blu-ray and totally forgot about the B&W version. Will definitely put that on my to-do list.

The Mist is probably my favorite novella of all time, even more than I Am Legend, which is painful for me to admit.

The weekend I read it, the sky was dark and rainy and I could just imagine these beasts coming out of the mist that rose from our asphalt roads. I was utterly horrified all weekend and for some days later had troubles sleeping.

I was excited for the film and I acknowledge that the ending is unique and fits the film, but I prefer the novella ending because I actually thought it was more bleak -
despite everyone surviving, they are going off into the rest of the world and the mist doesn't seem to ever end. No bullshit flamethrowers clearing out the problem - this world is over.
I still want a sequel so fucking bad, but it will never happen.

Yeah, I wish I would have seen it in theaters. Great film and I imagine the audience would have cheered at a certain part.

Ending was super bleak. And that
Giant monster walking in front of the truck, I felt the helplessness just watching that.

Team Carol.

That scene in your spoiler was the thing I paid $12 to see. I told my wife three times after the store scenes that it had better be in there and it was not disappointing. Those sounds. So haunting. I grinned even as the hairs rose on the back of my neck.

I thought The Mist was outstanding but I showed to my cousin and his wife and they both said is awfully boring. I was almost offended because I pride myself in enjoying quality cinema.

this right here is frightening just thinking about it.

For those that read the novella, wasn't it implied that the
dimension Mist monsters did not "leak" into this world, but rather it was the town that was phased into that dimension?

Just thinking of that vehicle driving further into the nightmare....
I thought the same would happen in the movie, but that movie ending is just cruel to the characters, I love it. Pure and true horror in the irony of life

Glad you enjoyed it OP. I just saw this recently as well when I went on a monster film binge. Definitely my one of my fave monster flicks. Loved the ending too.

Does the King novel differentiate enough from the film to warrant a read?

Man, I love The Mist. The creature designs are pretty great and I always feel legitimately scared about what the heck is wandering around in that mist.

I really need to check out the black and white version too apparently.

Definitely. it's still a similar story, and I wouldn't even say the differences are BETTER than the films (they're mostly not) but it's a really interesting read - there's a reason it's grabbed the imaginations of so many creatives even before it was made into a movie.

I think the film is the definitive version of the story, myself, but even thinking that, I have a hard time believing a fan of the movie won't find a lot to enjoy about the novella.
