Does anyone else think that the company manga idea is actually way better than the single person/assistants methods?

I mean, having one person work 100+ hours a week to produce a manga seems ridiculous. It would make a lot more sense to do it the movie way with writers/directors/artists/etc. I can't say I really know much about a mangaka's life, but I saw the schedule posted here for one guy and he was basically a slave with the amount of free time he could afford without missing his deadlines. He had like 2 hours a week open and 4 or 5 hours a night worth of sleep.

I mean, Hunter X Hunter would be on chapter 400+ now if it didn't rely on the health and schedule of one dude.

Don't let Bakuman fool you, the only people who would be against Nanamine's argument (his actual practice is a bit of a different beast) are morons like Saiko and Hattori.

Manga jobs are not the only jobs have crazy working hours .
Still to answer your question i like the way how it is now , 1 person doing the main work with assistants .
He has way more control over his work and that always a good thing in the creative industry IMO.

Still you are going to find some manga authors that work way more crazy than others cause that just how they are .

On side note if HxH had stay on it's weekly schedule it would be over 525+ chapters since it started in 98.

I suppose, but movies haven't really suffered for it. The mangaka/creator could take the director/head writer role and still delegate things out and control the direction of the manga. It would be someone else drawing, but that just means they have to hire a person that fits the style they want instead of it defaulting to their art style.

True. Mangaka seem to be a pretty hardcore bunch of people.

This is such a ludicrous (and hilarious) manga.

It's not like the only solution would be to have those series be written by committee. You could also simply give some authors more time instead of having them all follow the same rhythm.
Nanamine's analogy is ridiculous: writing a manga and making a movie aren't comparable enterprises at all. And what he's doing isn't "directing": it's paying a bunch of people to direct in his stead while he's goofing around in his new office. That wouldn't fly in the movie business either.

I find it a bit baffling that some find his argument convincing or even valid in any way, but then again, some were somehow defending Kira's in Death Note...

Hunter X Hunter would be on chapter 400+ now if it didn't rely on the health and schedule of one dude.
And talent. People tend to forget about the talent. They just want 400+ episodes, it seems.

I wrote a big post and it was all lost due to internet falling out. Fuck my life. Anyway as I was saying

3 problems I can see with this:
1. Funding
It's just not sustainable to pay a big team off one series. And if they work on more than one, well, their schedule would be just as busy as if they each worked on his own series (like it is now).

2. Overlapping areas
Between story and art, there's really no room for anyone to specialize if it's a big team. It will just be a mess of "teamwork" and people trying to do the same thing together. Projects need to be broken up.
The only correct way to do a big team with 2 areas would be to have 2 "chiefs" and the rest working under either of them, but.. this is basically the current system, only story can't and shouldn't have assistants, so only art does.

3. Coherency
Movies are released once in full and manga are released periodically and progressively. Also, movies are given far more time for the same amount of content as manga (if we give 1 chapter 10 minutes of movie time). Thus, manga will be way harder to maintain coherency with a big team.

Nanamine also sucks for his director metaphor because while a director takes the pieces and puts them together, Nanamine built a system which put the pieces together for him. He doesn't even look at the names. He has no input.
Nanamine can drop dead right now and the company would continue like usual. A director could drop dead and the movie would stop production right then and there.

All of Nanamine's ideas have been good and valid Jump/Japanese Manga magazine criticisms. The only problem is that he's been turned into a horrible cliche villain character who's "always wrong", goes over board, and screws up his own ideas.

The "company manga idea" is actually how most american comic book companies work. However there are draw backs between all the methods, and in the company manga method it's control. You can only have so much say when you're on a team of people, and especially when you work for someone higher on the food chain, regardless of where you are on the team.

That being said, Nanamine is right about this method being great for mangakas who are older and can't keep up with the "Jump" way of doing things.

Does anyone know a website where I can make a list of all mangas I'm following and that it updates when new chapter is out, not necessary but would be nice.

Site I used before doesn't have new stuff and no updates in a while so I lost track of some stuff I was reading :/

Bakuman's biggest problem currently and always will be is that its a "SHONEN JUMP Manga" and thus must toe the company line at all times.

Well that and its horribly written "romances".

I like to use Feedreader and follow the RSS feeds of groups and individual series on MangaFox that I'm currently reading. I get updated instantaneously since FR's always running and doing periodic updates in the background and it's really convenient. Mangaupdates works, but sometimes releases that aren't by a major group are not recorded.

I think it's been a long time since they gave a damn about the main romance plot. I just hope they don't go back to it after this horrible Nanamine arc.

It'd be better then this Nanamine retread though. To have him back after so soon reeks.

Exactly, at least a romance plot with Saiko would be "progress" for the story. Nanamine's BS is just going to end with him being wrong and everything going back to status quo, maybe with the old authors learning to do things the Jump way again and having semi successful series. It's like trying to get excited about the "monster of the day" formula in a monster battle series.

The ONLY good thing that can come of this arc is if Nanamine pushes Saiko and Shujin to write their new manga. Otherwise it will be a big waste of time like Nanamine's last encounter, possibly making the series worse off than it was by the end of it (Nakai's return).

Actually I got some good vibes about that from this chapter, when Nanamine talked about PCP. It definitely seems like a possible end to this arc would involve progression on Ashirogi's part.

Naruto

Genin arc impressions

Pros:
  • Ah, character development!
  • Very good art, especially the backgrounds. Characters are expressive.
  • Humor is pretty funny.
  • Fights are pretty boss.
  • Training arcs don't suck and actually give more in-sight to the characters than the usual training arc.
Cons:
  • Characters designs are mixed bag. Some are good like Kakashi, Zabuza, Haku. Some are meh like Sakura and Naruto.
  • Why is everyone either lonely or have dead parents?
  • Haku's motivations for living are dumb, what a terrible character arc.
  • I want someone to make a chart of every moment in this series when someone stops in the middle of a fight to talk about their feelings.
Also just some questions:

How does the government work in the Naruto universe? Do the Kage rule, or are there actual political bodies?

Do we ever see samurai again? I don't remember ever seeing them, and it seems like an important part of the setting.

Do they not notice the fact that Nanamine is actively annoying combines with the large amounts of text to make this arc unreadable?

The kages rules the hidden villages. There are lords who rule the entire country. Like there is a lord who rule the entire fire country that includes Konoha. Konoha is somewhat independent but the Daimyo has influence on Konoha´s decisions. You will read that later.

Yes we see samurai again.

Oh no...you're reading this too? What's next Death Note? Bakuman? Eyeshield 21? Hitman Reborn? Fairy Tail? Hajime No Ippo? Claymore? Psyren?

Well at least it's different from the usual Bleach roller coaster rides.

I've read a good portion of those already. I'm not new to manga. To quote myself for the new page:

So I'm thinking about reading Narutu and giving impressions ala Bleach. I've read a good portion of it like 7 years ago, but it's been so long that I've completely forgotten about it aside from personality quirks of the central characters.

Is it better or worse than Bleach?

I wasn't trying to say you were new to manga. It's just that you gave impressions from one "train wreck" manga a little while ago and now you're doing another one.

Well I only did Bleach mainly cause that's all people talk about anymore. Now I'm doing Naruto for a similar reason. Unlike Bleach, however, I have finished Part 1 of Naruto a long time ago, but it's been so long I've forgotten pretty much everything about it aside from major characters.

I thought of the american comics business model too when Nanamine described his idea. The big problem with the American business model is that writers/artists do not have that much creative control in large companies(Marvel/DC) and often a lot of them will quit due to creative differences. You will often get inconsistent art and storytelling in comics because of this issue.

I have always favored manga over comics because they are relatively consistent each chapter. Successful manga also tend to end on a finish note(even if they seem rushed) when their popularity wane, but the artist/writer can always come out with a new manga afterward.

Tokyo Girls Destruction - Chapter 4

like a japanese version of Lord of the Flies just with more violence and high-school girls

Fairy Tail 248

tumblr_lqm3lc5qTX1qi8cdmo1_250.png

Their best panel. I must say that this has quickly rose to become my second favorite arc in the series. Mashima kept the surprises going by not blessing them with an day 0 power up, but rather, having everyone rely on their own strength, dedication, friendship, teamwork, and pride for their guild to make this conclusion of Hades as thrilling as the phenomenal dragonslayer team up and the epic magic of tomorrow of the previous and my favorite arc.

The last chapter with Natsu, Erza, Gray, Wendy, and Lucy teaming up to propel an attack with all that they had to Hades and this chapter ending it with an onslaught of attacks from them all was excellent and will be amazing to see animated. I did enjoy the use of the lighting too from Natsu. I wish Gazille was around to be in it, but, hopefully next arc and hopefully Ultear joins Fairy Tail

No 6 1-5

The artwork in the manga is nice. Plot feels more direct and more enjoyable than the anime.

Welcome back DTL.

Nononono

Negita fucking up those monks has to be the best part of this arc. Man he really beat the shit out of them.

But just how many times can these guys 1-up each other? I don't even know if Terashi will be able to get more than 120. We have to be hitting a limit at some point, right? I mean geez.

Tokyo Girls Destruction 4

I was wondering who the girl with the eyepatch was when looking at the raw, and now I know. Some more trouble for poor Amasu as the story progress, I'm sure.
Now I'm curious about what Amasu will answer. I hope she won't get tricked in helping that sadistic bitch.
Also, Betten Court has such a sexy drawing style.

Saru Lock

This is like an Oh Great! manga that decided to focus solely on 'hip' shit & sex. Which would be cool and dandy if it came across organic in any way--it doesn't--at all.

I'm interested in seeing the live action series though. I have the feeling it might actually be a bit better than even the source material.
