I was going more for comparison with the rest of the world, I guess. It also changes if you count or don't count the lewd stuff versus the implied/anything-but-full-sex stuff.

Not really. Much of those stuff still have negative view from mainstream masses. We can see this reflected on many stereotypes in Japanese popular culture like manga or anime, the mainstream one off course. It is just somehow in Japan expression through creative work have much more freedom so we could see many strange stuffs like guro etc.
