Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

I brought this up a while back (constant running being a problem) and I've weighed how legit the issue is over time. I definitely think there's something to it.

EDIT: Can't find the NickMercs short, but he's bringing it up too. He references games like Counter Strike and League of Legends giving players "breaks" mid game.

Not sure how Marathon solves for this but I think it's something they should look into. The constant zig zagging across the map...there's something not good about that.
Just camp Station, problem solved.

Personally I'm still loving the game but I really would like Bungie to tell us what is coming.
BF6 did this two weeks ago and it totally reignited my interest in the game.
I want Bungie to do the same, it doesn't have to be an exact roadmap but just show me what you plan to do for the next twelve months.

That's coming. They'll hype up Season 2 in late May / early June.

They are literally called runners…

That's great but if they have 400 devs now working on the game then show us what you've planned for the next few seasons.
It doesn't have to be exactly what you have planned but roughly let us know how many maps, events etc.
A general roadmap is all we want to see, Marathon has replaced Arc as my favourite MP game but it would be nice to see more of Bungie and the Marathon team.
I still believe that Bungie can turn Marathon around even with the absolute crazy behaviour around its player count behaviour that's feeding the YouTube algorithm.

They layed out the first 2 seasons at launch. With a vague 3rd season tease.

Expect thing will change but we'll get more info at the end of next month I'd expect.

I think they need at least 2 more maps. One that fits in-between Perimeter and Darsh and one before outpost.

Then you could have a proper climb through the maps with loot to match so there would be no reason for high level folks to be fucking around on the low level maps. Right now the difficulty ramp is way too steep for your average player.

Then I'd have night versions of all maps as limited time modes every few days for 24 hours with high level loot.

Now is not the time to be drip feeding content they need to come out all guns blazing, no fucking around. I'm not having they don't have at least 2 more maps almost ready to go after 6 years and a decent delay. We'd be at season 3 by now if they would have released "on time"

If they don't have a load of content almost ready then they only have themselves to blame when it goes tits up.

I'm not a fan. The PvE isn't fun enough (yet - hopefully) to fill the down times between PvP engagments. I'm surprised they did it considering you can't get too upset for dying in that mode.

Edit: Here's a pretty insightful review if you guys are interested...

Yeah the pve and events are lackluster and this mode shows it. There needs to be a lot more happening on the map

I don't think that would alleviate the issue.

There's a degree of constant stress in this game that other titles don't have. I'd find a way to break it up in more enjoyable ways.
Fucking hell. Not every game needs to hold everybody's fucking hand.

We get it. You fucking suck at the game. Go hold hands with somebody in Arc Raiders or something...

It's not about hand holding. It's about the constant pressure to move forward. That's fine a percentage of time, but too much turns people off.

I had this same observation in The Finals. A great game that never reached the popularity it deserved. These games produce the feeling of having a shopping list in a grocery store. We got to go here, there, and then back over there.

It's an album that's filled with up tempo songs. You got to throw in some slower tracks to give the album more flow.

Loads of guns are harder to obtain for some reason making using some of them easier said than done.
Yeah i really dont like it. I dont remember the last time i found the brrt smg for example and i dont think i ever used the copperhead smg lol.

Also the heavy ammo AR is really rare aswell

Yeah, I wonder if their plan is to "rescramble" guns each season so the Longshot is rare and the Ares is common, for example? Would help to keep each season feeling a little fresher.

Think thats probably the plan.

Although you can just buy the Ares from the shop whenever you like btw. I quite like it but it makes a fucking racket when you charge it up.

The AR isn't that great although I've not used it much. I have the gold mod for it that overheats targets but thats fairly useless with the ttk being the way it is.

On a different note im coming round to thinking that the game isn't that hard after all (Cryo aside). Position well and play smart and you'll extract a lot more often than you don't. I've died twice all day. Maybe tomorrow I'll get my shit pushed in and change my tune.

Step 1: Make door locks more impactful around the map. Harder to get into, take longer to unlock, make a bigger noise.

Step 2: Door locks should have some kind of interactive puzzle based game to them.

Step 3: Introduce a hacking based Runner that can tackle door locks more efficiently.

Step 4: Marathon is now a better game.

Definitely think they should take a minute or two to unlock and the chime just keeps getting louder. Get the whole lobby involved.

In 50 hours I've never once used
  • Copperhead SMG
  • Impact H-AR
  • Twin Tap HBR
  • V85 Circuit Breaker
  • V99 Channel
  • Misriah 2442 (technically looted one of these and extracted but died immediately in the next match without really getting to use it)
Which I don't really think should be a thing. I've thought about buying the H-AR a couple times from the store but never felt like spending $7K on it when the M77 is so good and when I found the HMG so terrible.

I got a Gold Brrt the one time I did Cryo, and I have a purple one in my vault but I've been saving it. I think maybe I've had 3 total?

100%

I definitely play the game more casually then a lot of people here (I'm not out here min maxing loot, only Lvl 51, barely even touched Outpost with probably less then 5 hours on the map out of 50) so maybe I'm just not playing it the way I should be but I would say I use the V11 Punch, M77, Bully, Volley, and Retaliator 90% of the time.

That being said, I'm still having fun, and I'd love to get the platinum but I think I'm gonna need them to continue to support the game because it'll take me awhile to get the 100 levels (that's the only trophy I have left).

Most of those guns become available for barter later on but should be available way sooner. The twin tap comes with a thermal scope when its available. Really handy for Dire marsh but needs stability mods to make it decent.

Im happy VBMM is being added right after I posted about it. Bungie seems to have a good grasp on the game's pain points. I think they will execute well.

I don't like the change. Teams already rushed to fight at the main Poi before the change. One fewer team makes the map too quiet after the initial burst of violence.

The impact feels pretty good after being modded up a bit to reduce recoil. It occupies a weird place as a specialized gun sandwiched between more useful generalists. The bully hits hard and has a higher RoF than the impact. The M77 out duels the impact at most ranges and is fine for PvE or pvp. Id play it more if it were cheaper/more plentiful.

Welcome lost soul!

It's not cumulative across seasons, you need to do it within a single season, which means committing to the grind. I'm going for it this season because who knows what happens next.

Alright well Outpost is not my favourite map right now. Three runs in a row now we've been shot up within 30 seconds of spawning. It's fucking miserable. The second fight was back and forth but the other two were just massacres. Not fun tbh.

Happens on all maps tbh. The Spawns need serious work. Especially now most know where they are.

Its kinda surreal. Dunno whats the plan here really. Is sony really okay with how it performs right now or Bungie just hoping for the best

Marathon reviewed well, has a decent retention rate, and is still selling copies. Giving Bungie a chance to grow similar to other games that had rocky starts makes more sense than writing off the game and shutting it down after less than two months.

Clearly the Steam CCU and budget guesses don't show the whole picture, if they did they'd be ramping down, not up.

Still loving it myself dispite all the running around and wet farts.

Agree. I'm still yet to extract from Cryo, but I can't see that happening this season. Just not interested in that map at all in its current form.
Have you run it much? I have probably have about 15 unsuccesful runs in total so far. Not taking it too seriously and never expect to get out. Been really close multiple times.

Honestly the map is gorgeous, worth the 5k entry just to have a mooch around. I just have a couple of cracks each weekend with randoms, an LMG and a load of bullets. Its not as bad as everyone makes out as long as you go in with the expectation of dying. Just learning the map is my goal, death is the first step after all.
