Mario Kart 8 200CC (speed) announced

200CC speed that sounds rad. Now I almost want to buy this Mario Kart game just to experience it. I've given up on the MK franchise (too many balance issues introduced with their item selections), but that really sounds fascinating. Decisions, decisions..

Item balance is just as bad all other Mario Karts.

Hell in the Gaf races we played with overpowered items mode cause that way everyone got them and that was more balanced than normal lol

Not as all other Mario Karts. The Mario Karts without blue shells alone are by default more balanced ;)

To say nothing of other items like Bullet Bill. I'm not sure how the Boomerang Flower is balanced though, is it bad?

I'm sure, lots of people praise it. But lots of people praised the last few MK games too, but I just do not like their weapon selections in the past bunch of MK games. Too unbalanced, and some of them just exist to allow inadequate players the slight chance of victory, and to do so it targets lead players. I just like my games pure skill vs. pure skill, luck variables turn me off. Outcomes to me should be 100% based on how good you are, not how lucky you get with blue shells or other cheese weaponry.

MK8 still has blue shells and another weapon I don't like, so I'm not sure I can get past it. Maybe I'll rent it from Gamefly.

I hated Mario Kart Wii, but I like Mario Kart 8. It is way better balanced than before, even if I still think they can do better and the missing battle mode is a sacrilege.
If you are looking for a local coop game, you might as well pick this one up.

I laughed pretty hard at the trailer switching to 60fps footage when showing 200cc gameplay, Nintendo really understand games :)

I'll rent it I think. I just can't commit to a game with this weapon selection, every Mario Kart game with these specific weapons I dislike (bullet bill, blue shell) has been a game that has turned me off in the end. So it's too risky to spend that money :(

But 200cc finally makes it such that I will want to try it out through rent :D

This game does need an online "classic" mode with only mushrooms, green shells and banana peels. Or I'll play this mode without items.

@Amir0x: you can join an online tournament set on "no items", it's pretty nice. I'd prefer "mushrooms only" but there is no reliable tournament with this setting.

To me, the only balancing issue in MK8 is the Coin power-up. I'm in first, dominating the race, and suddenly I slip off of the item button and let my green shell go, or a green shell ricochets out of nowhere: oh, the nightmares. Next item I get is a coin, even though I already have 10 of those, and boom, a red shell catch me in the final stretch of the race. Also, I never got the Super Horn while in first place, even if one of its better uses is to defend against blue shells.

Isn't online 150cc? I don't remember there being a setting like with single player and I barely played single player.

Online depends on your rating. It automatically switches to 150cc once you get higher in ratings. There is also a way to only search for 150cc races online right from the start using the custom search function.

Oh wow. That actually does change things for me. Can you make a no items playlist that random people can join? And do enough players play MK8 to make it viable? Like, will people join fast enough?

If the answer is yes, maybe I can let myself buy it then...

Take it from somebody who thought that Mario Kart has been on a decline: MK8 is the best one. Even if the weapon selection is whatever, it's still the most fun thing I played all last year.

What's the rating that takes you to 150cc?

Well I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be the case if it still had blue shells and bullet bill. I did not like MK7, did not like MK DS. Like, at all. MK8 would have to drop those items for me to actively enjoy it. Nintendo tries too hard to accommodate shit players in competition. But the fact that you can turn off all items in online competition does change things for me. I really am considering it now. So, we'll see. Don't want to keep discussing how much I like this game though, then the thread becomes about my tastes and that's dumb.

I'm just very curious about 200cc now, that does sound fun. If I can turn off items, I may be in to buy. If not, I'll rent it for a taste.

Well, I'm inexperienced (low rank) and I get put in with plenty of high rank players. I wonder if it slows the speed down for the lowest ranks.

It depends on the average of the room. So if you are joining a room with higher than 3000 average say, then you're likely being put in 150cc. But if you want to be 100% sure, just search for only 150cc online races in Custom.

The answer is yes.

The way it works, anybody can create a tournament online, which then works like the "Worldwide" or "Regional" modes, except the tournament creator can set various rules: 50cc/100cc/150cc, DLC tracks or no DLC tracks, teams or no teams, etc. Among those rules, you can set items to normal, explosive, mushrooms only, banana peels only, shells only... or no items at all. By default, anybody can join.

It actually does not work all that well in general, because people started making tons of tournaments with nobody in it and they got abandoned fast, but there are a few popular tournaments online where there are always people whenever you log in. Among those, a "no items" tournament, "No item racing".

It's actually pretty sweet, I can't stand standard online play now, way too annoying and random. Shame Nintendo themselves didn't make big, general channels with settings instead of this mess, there would be even more people online, but it's still better than nothing.

Dude, Nintendo is KILLING it!

12 bucks for 16 new tracks, new karts, new characters, and now a whole new game mode FOR FREE!!

was the thing I was thinking about F-Zero with this new mode

jokes aside, Nintendo is just making an amazing job in terms of DLC with this title

wow thanks. Now you say this, I think someone might have told me some of this before and I must have forgot. You can rent from Gamefly and then convert that to a full purchase if you like it right? I think that's what I'm going to do. Sounds like if I can do what you say (and of course you can), it might be just what the doctor ordered :D

Honestly, for me this was the best thing out of the whole direct. I always went back to Double Dash mostly because this game just felt too slow. Now I'll probably be playing this a ton more

Remember the "Valuing Nintendo games less because they are too easy" thread? Ah, sweet memories.
Maybe this is what the OP of that thread was requesting, so he/she might be happy about this update :) Nintendo also makes a lot of games. Even if one or two games should be hard (like Tropical Freeze that many mentioned), his/her point might still be valid when talking about Nintendo's games as a whole package (i havnt played many of the newer Nintendo games, so i cant comment on the difficulty level myself, and whats difficult is of course a subjective thing).

Welp, better shape up my driving skills again. See you on the road again Roo, Burning, Exentryk, Omni, Hypno, and other Gaf racers I may have forgotten to mention.

I'm in the frantic lobby waiting for other gaffers to join, so there's your chance. :P

This is a big deal to me. In addition to the dlc, which is really cheap, a whole new way to play the existing levels just adds so much value to the game.

Can't wait!

Wow, what's the story behind this gif?

I miss playing this game, damn. How the hell Nintendo's gonna top this in terms of pretty much everything is a mystery

Screw more games I all want is more mk 8 DLC. Can't get enough of this game

Honestly, Mario Kart 8 might wind up my most played game of the generation, which is amazing since every other generation since the N64, Smash held that title. MK8 is just the best realization of the Mario Kart formula on every angle and with it constantly getting more content, there's just no contest anymore.

There are times I pop onto GAF hoping DLC packs 3 through n get announced out of the blue.

Just be aware that while that's a fine personal preference, that's actively bad game design if you want your game to have more of a party feel to it (which I feel is something Nintendo is going for). It's REALLY hard to get people, especially those not as invested in that game or video games in general, to keep playing with you if they can NEVER beat those better than themselves.

I'm a little shocked Nintendo isn't charging $5-$10 for this. People say Nintendo doesn't get with the current times but I like most of their choices.

Can't wait to play this.
