Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - overview trailer (JP)

Super sure this will keep getting some support after launch and will remain the sole MK title on the Switch. It's THE ultimate MK experience and I can't see them starting from scratch to make another on the same console. Wouldn't make sense and they probably wouldn't even top it lol

I think they'll do MK9 on Switch, just not for a while.

My absolute favourite racing game since F-Zero GX. I've put a good 100 hours into MK8 on WiiU and cannot wait to buy this again!

People complaining about no new single-player content are crazy. You already have 48 incredible courses, and WiiU owners clearly aren't the target demographic.

From a visual standpoint the battle arenas look pretty damn awesome.
BUT from a potential gameplay perspective they already look so damn disappointing.
Everything looks so flat. From the first to the last arena there only seems to be one level - when there's more there seems to be no possible way to just drop down.
What elevated Mario Kart 64 in gameplay, especially in Block Fort was the ability to make a drop on someone. Even better, you could evade Items by changing elevation and driving up a level and create choke points with triple green shells from a safe point way up.

Maybe I'm wrong here, I haven't played them yet, but it seems to be lacking a lot of what made Mario Kart 64 special and that bled into the other entries. Hopefully they at least have the options to customize stock and time and all of that.

I couldn't disagree more when it comes to MK64's battle mode being special - I think it ruined the purity of the SNES battle mode and it had a negative influence on future battle area designs. Block Fort is one of the worst ever for me, IIRC we stuck to Skyscraper back in the day. Reasonably compact, you can see opponents, there are obstacles you can use to block weapons but people are on the same level so you have a decent chance of running into/hitting each other. The multi-level tracks for me just seemed to lead to everyone driving around trying to even find someone, and when you did, chances are your weapon would be useless as they were on a different level. Maybe for some players that suspense was thrilling but I found the downtime simply tedious.

I for one am really glad we are getting back to more flat arena styles.

When I brought my switch into work, people thought the universally praised game Zelda game 'looked good' but were more interested in when Mario Kart was coming out.

Dock is 1080p 60?

I pray it is, because BotW is a blurry mess.

Blurry mess? Don't blame the game for your TV's poor upscaling and/or calibration.

Anyway, on topic: I loved Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and I'm thinking about double dipping. But I'm a bit worried about having to do the time trials again for gold wheels. My right index hurt for days after last time. :-/

Hardly.

Nways, Inklings look so cool in Mario Kart 8.

While not 100% sure I definitely think it has a good shot at it, people overestimate the fact that its a port while not realising that there was not that much people that had MK8.

For someone who skipped Wii U like me Mk8 Deluxe has really great value, maybe a little pricey being a port but including both DLC packs and new battle arenas rounds a great package and the get go title to have multiplayer fun on Switch once it's released.

my misses hates Mario Kart 8 because of the lack of Auto Drift, i'm glad they have added this Smart Steering thing what hopefully negates her issues.

MK8 is a evergreen title. It sold really good on Wii U.

I have the Wii U version. DlC too. I'm torn because I have a Switch and I want more high quality games on it. MK8D looks awesome but man... why can't it have new tracks or just be super cheap?

Hey, I wouldn't mind if they would support both play styles. I don't think anyone would mind if 1 of the 8 arenas would be Block Fort or something new in that style, since we've already seen SNES style battle in the game.

The real breaking point for me would be the options though. I I can't switch between Stock and Time for offline local play, the battle mode might as well be missing. Most of the tension comes from driving around with 1 balloon, trying to rig the game in your favor.
With an endless amount of balloons, it just wouldn't be as fun for me and the people I play with.

But it's still some time until the game releases, so I'll wait and see.
It's a bit strange that the game is only coming end of April. With the stuff we know now, it doesn't feel like the game is still 7 weeks off. But maybe there's still stuff left to find out.

It could be better only if they would give a discount to people owning the Wii U version..

Anyway great game. It's going to sell a lot.

I got MK8 at launch and have all the DLC and I'm still hyped for this.
I wonder how long it will be until MK9.

I'm tempted to still stick by my opinion that mk9 won't be on switch at all. They might go with more dlc tracks for 8D instead, but I don't see them breaking the 1 retail kart game per console this time around.

Donkey Kong dabbing when using the feather.

DK was doing that before the term dabbing was popularised. Also, it's not because of the feather, but because he's performing a trick.

If anything, we should all be calling it Donking.

This is the first time they've ported a Mario Kart. It has also allowed them to get a Mario Kart out for the system without rushing one to market.

I expect we'll hear something about the next Mario Kart at E3 2018.

I'm gonna guess that this game won't see any DLC and instead we'll see MK9 in 2 or 3 years.

I think we might see a Super Smash Kart for the Switch instead of Mario Kart 9, and the Mario Kart 8 DLC with the non Mario/DK characters and tracks was a test to see how people would react.

The Mario Kart name is too strong, they can add more Nintendo characters without changing the name and can advertise it by showing them on the box.

Yeah, I think they'll continue with the route of being Mario Kart and adding a couple of guest characters from other series.

Notice that the Mario Kart name allows them the freedom to set courses anywhere. With the other Nintendo characters there seems to be a need for their courses to be set in recognisable locations.

Well to be fair the Super Smash name is pretty strong as well.

But even if it's called Mario Kart 9 I do think the series is going to move into a Smash like direction with more and more Nintendo franchises.

Mario Kart is much stronger.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 13.15 million
Mario Kart Wii - 36.83 million

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - 8.59 million
Mario Kart 7 - 14.82 million

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 5.16 million
Mario Kart 8 - 8.26 million

The next game will undoubtedly be called Mario Kart, but I agree that there will likely be more non Mario characters. I hope to see Pokemon in the next game.

Gotta be honest: I'm not sure what they could add to MK9 that they aren't adding to MK9 outside of a complete re-do of the series. I think they just add some new DLC to it and call it a day.

Although it pains me not going to have a Mario Kart on my Switch, I simply can't be paying for the exact same game again. Maybe when they announce another season pass I'll reconsider, but until that time I must stay strong and not fall for the trap Nintendo set for me.

Those battle maps do look nice though, too bad I hate battle mode in general.

Mario Kart DS had ROB
Mario Kart Wii had the Blue Falcon
Mario Kart 7 had Wuhu Island*

They've been adding cameos from other Nintendo properties for a while now, MK8 just turned it up to 11 with its DLC packs (alternatively it is the first Mario Kart in a while that was pure Mario until the DLC hit*). They haven't felt the need to rebrand it before and I doubt they're going to start now.

*Some do say Melody Motorway is a Wii Music related stage.

Wormholes
Isn't that what the Mario Kart GP games do?

MK8D is going to have a Baby stage, a Cow Milking Stage and a Ball Counting Stage confirmed

I wouldn't mind no MK9 and this being it for the Switch.
Due to us now getting console and handheld games on one system there's a lot I'd like Nintendo to get around to, so if MK is out of the way early then that's cool.

Block Fort.

More Nintendo Characters and Tracks based on them
(Kirby, Samus, Fox and Pikachu to complete the Smash starters)

Look at Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed to see all the kind of shit they could add to the single-player experience.

What they could add to Mario Kart 9 has already been in Mario Kart, and that's the Mission Mode from Mario Kart DS.

My point is wiiu doesn't exist to the majority of the planet.

The same can be said for Switch. I don't see Mario Kart doing for Switch what it failed to do for Wii U. And that's even with offering everyone another free game just for buying it.

I got rid of my Wii U, so I'm in for a copy and looking forward to it. But the real killer app will be Splatoon 2.
