Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

If I had a wii u this game would be an automatic buy for me for the Koopalings alone. I hope the gameplay is sped up though. The one for wii felt a bit too slow pace for my liking, not like Mario Kart 64 speed at all.

Not sure if it has already been mentioned, but when it's announced that the blue shells are now grounded, does that mean they crash through all racers ahead of you like in MK64?

From what I remember, even that I think was kinda slow for me. I don't know it could be my memory, but I still miss Mario Kart 64's tight speed.

Mario Kart 64... fast? What?

Yes. It was already like this in MK7.

Wait, really? I thought it was still flight-based like Double Dash and MKDS

Nope. They clipped its wings in MK7. It flies along the ground and can hit anyone along the way, then once it reaches first place it takes off into the air and crashes into first place in an explosion. In MK8 they've apparently reduced how long the explosion stuns you and it doesn't make you topple out of control.

Hopefully this means we won't have a repeat of Mario kart Wii 150cc

I still have flashbacks.

I've really never understood when people complain about items in MK Wii's GP. I just played through all cups in 150cc again and only had a few frustrations. It's about on par with the other games in that regard, and MK7 is worse tbh.

I actually was somewhat okay with MK7's blue shell. Crashing through the other racers made it not compete bullshit for first place. I'm more excited for the full on item switch though. Going to be great in online communities. The bit of customization in 7 was a huge step in the right direction.

It just felt like they never stopped sometimes in MKWii. On top of that, they had really stupid items like that thunder cloud... Still don't understand why that thing existed.

I had the exact opposite situation. For my runs Mario Kart Wii was utter hell (35+ tries on the Star cup plus about a dozen for the Special cup, and retro wasn't a walk in the park) while Mario Kart 7 was fairly easy up until the special cup where I had to retry 3 or 4 times.

Holy crap are those reflections on the coins?? Sry if it's already been mentioned

Probably a standard cubemap, yes. I could be misremembering, but I thought 3D World had a similar effect.

Just pre-ordered this game from Kmart.

So far, the pre order has given everyone about $38 in points back if your a rewards member (free to sign-up), plus some people were able to get $5 off with an extra coupon.

After the points back and money off, I'm paying $22 total for the game. For those waiting to jump in, the deal sold out quick the last time around.

I'm confused as to how I get the price that low. I only see a potential 5% point return. Though I should note that I have no idea what kind of point system Kmart is on.

You do have to sign up I think before you see the points. The points works for both Sears and Kmart purchases. It's not a credit card based system.

As of right now, it shows $28 worth of points earned for pre-ordering. After that, there is two coupons on the rewards account that allow you to get $5 off a purchase, plus the other adds $10 more in points.

More details here from other people:

I'm finding it really hard to adjust back to non-snaking power sliding.

Just spent the whole weekend playing Mario Kart Double Dash. Playing 7 feels so unintuitive.

I know some people absolutely hate snaking (and it's understandable why they do), but at the same time, I love it. I've noticed that even when I'm playing Mario Kart games that do not have snaking, I tend to do the motion, anyways, lol. I miss it honestly. I realize online matches are a pain when snaking is involved, though.

god this game is gonna be so much fun online against fellow Gaffers. i can already smell the burn

BBBURRRRRN

It's doesn't allow for it.

Which is infuriating trying to recover from being hit.

Also, just firing up Mario Kart 64, are my eyes deceiving me but it seems to be running at 30 fps.

I was thinking the same thing.

Mario Kart 64 doesn't have any more of a sense of speed than other MK games, from my perspective.

To me it feels looser and out of control in a good way compared to DD and Wii. In the end it's just small differences though, everyone is gonna have a preference.

SMK: 8 characters
MK 64: 8 characters
MK SS: 8 characters
MK DD: 10 teams, 20 characters
MK DS: 12 characters
MK Wii: 24 characters
MK 7: 17 characters
MK 8: 30 characters

Nice.

DS only had 12, but it was a good 12. Wii had 24 but there was a lot of filler (Babies, Dry Bowser). Mario Kart 8 seems to have some great additions (Koopa Kids) and bad ones (So many Babies, Metal Mario)

Also keep in mind that at least two of those characters are probably Bowser Jr. and Mii.

Also Diddy Kong, since I would assume he's in by default.

it existed because there was the chance you could bump into someone and pass it off, an interesting mechanic that made for some great moments in multiplayer for mine. was either trying to avoid someone frantically and nearly running off the track in the process, or chasing someone down and watching them try to stay on the track and avoid me.

Thinking about it, there's no way there's only 30 characters. Reporting my list from a couple pages back:
Here's a list of characters that appeared in either Kart Wii or Kart 7 that haven't been confirmed yet:

Dry Bones
Birdo
Diddy Kong
Bowser Jr.
King Boo
Funky Kong
Dry Bowser
Honey Queen
Wiggler
Mii
I think at the very least Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, Birdo, Mii, and Dry Bowser are safe. I think it'll be 36 + Mii so 37.

I really hope there are more than 30 characters.
I mean, they already made it this far.
They included that POS called Metal Mario.. how hard can it be to add the rest of the MKW roster? Or even the fat bee and Wiggler from MK7?

Hopefully this is only a placeholder.

I would say Dry Bowser and Mii are shoe ins. Mii is obvious and Dry Bowser has a track dedicated to him. I'd like Dry Bones or Boo, but I doubt they're in.

In Dry Bowser's case, he has a few ads in Twisted Mansion, Bone Dry Dunes and Grumble Volcano where he was the Time Trial ghost in MKW.

Can't really say for sure that those are all of the characters. Mario Kart Wii's character-selection screen expanded as you unlocked more characters.
