Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

No, Mario Kart 7 started that trend.

Wish there were more of them. The game looks fun, but after Sonic Racing drastically altered its tracks with every new lap, doing three turns around a never-changing circuit doesn't fill me with huge excitement. Mount Wario looks far and away the best of the bunch as it offers new things from start to finish.

Anyone knows if the embargo ends at midnight today or 9am tomorrow?

8:01 am tomorrow here in Portugal.

A big problem I had with Sonic was that the track design isn't very interesting, it's cool to look at, but it's nowhere near the tightness a Mario Kart title has. Not to mention that you have several shortcuts, underwater sections, areal sections and anti-gravity, so not every lap has to be the same. With that said, Mount Wario is awesome and I wish there were more tracks like that.

So uhm I'm late to the party but what do coins do in MK8? I saw them in 7 but I did not have that game.
you buy new parts with them or something?
In races, they make your top speed faster with a maximum of 10 coins. Outside races, they're automatically tallied up to unlock vehicle parts and characters when you reach certain amounts.
Ah, that's the one I haven't played. I guess I should get a 3DS at some point...

You should! it's a great game.

I like those types of tracks too. I believe N64 Rainbow Road is one of them.

Hopefully the game actually keeps track of all the coins you collect this time, rather than the ones you finish the race with like it did in 7.

It would've made getting the last pieces much less of a slog, not even counting the alternate unlocks for the Gold parts.

Hmm I'm not sure since there's no counter, but considering the amount of coins the game says I collected when I unlock stuff, I'll say it counts every coin you collect. I'm not sure though.

An easy way to test (if it still unlocks the initial parts every 50 coins) would be seeing if you get a part after finishing the first GP you play.

Which I want to say I've seen in a video elsewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

When embargoes end so soon prior to launch, it seems like that usually means the publisher is confident the reception is and will be glowing (e.g. TLoU). Two weeks is a lot. Probably will see a lot of 90+ reviews. 16 more days.... -_-

I thought the same thing until I loaded up Mario Kart Wii and just played with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck ... Just feels really comfy and natural.. Surprised no one else has commented on that.

Wii remote and nunchuk? I didn't even think of this as a control scheme..

It was incredibly comfortable in MKWii mainly because of how tricks and wheelies were stupidly mapped to D-Pad on non-motion control and a quick flick of the remote pulled them off with no hassle. (Also because detached controllers are just comfortable in general)

As long as the control scheme more closely resembles MK7 for traditional controllers then either should be serviceable.

I would have to create a new profile to test it and I can't be bothered :P. All I know is that things are being unlocked at a steady pace without much hassle, I'm probably missing very few things.

Yeah, I wasn't gonna ask anyone to test if they'd already made headway, just wondering if anyone remembered offhand.

Do you have to pay everything up front with a preorder card? I've been thinking about getting it at Walmart for the free wheel.

Nope. You buy a $5 card, and you bring that card in once the game releases. You are basically buying a $5 gift card that's specifically intended for that game.

I'm still not sure whether the racing wheel is exclusive to the Walmart.com, or if I'll be getting it for pre-ordering in-store as well.

Is there a reason why we've never seen anyone going into the left path in the woods? They always go to the right one...
I definitely saw in one video of someone taking the left path, but I can't find it.

From what I remember of it, it isn't much different than the right path.

One of the things many people are complaining is the coin item. It gives you 2 coins... and that's it. Maybe its only use is if you have 10 coins, you can keep for a later use if you lose some coins. I think it should be cool that if you use this when you have 9 or 10 coins, it let you break the limit, so you can have 11 or 12 coins. And even, go for more if you use it when you have more than 10 coins. So you must decide to use it to reach your ten coins or keep it to have better maximum speed.

Hey guys I haven't been paying too much attention to this game lately..any news on diddy?? Last I remember was people saying he's MIA

Using a coin gives you a tiny boost whether you have 10 coins or not, so it's not entirely worthless. People complain that they get a lot of coins in first place, but that's the point, you're not supposed to give a hand to the player ahead, just the players behind.

Any other way to avoid/escape the blue shell other than the horn? Is there a way to outmaneuver it or is it either you have a horn or you're hosed?

Is saw a youtube clip where a guy used a mushroom to escape the blue shell from hitting them kinda like the previous version.

Like in past games, using a mushroom right before it hits you...Tho that's not saying much since it's a chore to keep the mushroom long enough without being hit lol.

Haven't seen it confirmed for 8, but you used to be able to boost away with a mushroom.
edit: ^^^

Sweet! Timing looks like it could be tricky at first but at least it's another option.

Wow, I didn't notice that.

People like when skill is actually rewarded in Mario Kart so yeah, learn the Blue Shell-thwarting tricks. I never did myself. Then again I never found myself saving things like bombs and mushrooms in first place.
