I just got the hammers.

The hammer bros were teaching me how to fight with the hammers, and I got up to the counter attack part. The enemy came up to attack me, I hit him with the counter, and they never continued the explanation. Now there's an X button on the screen and all I can do is keep countering. I think it happened because I let go of X too early on the counter. Did anyone else run into this glitch?

I didn't run into it... sounds like it was just a timing goof/glitch for the tutorial, something rare. Just restart from your last save, unless you find yourself running into the problem again.
