That's an interesting graph. Here's my theory:

I assume that when tracking these numbers, video game stores would be a focal point, right? Maybe the discrepancy occurs because of the "non-game" audience of the Wii, more of them are purchased in stores that would not typically be high sellers of consoles. So the amount each tracker accounts for from those stores may be different? And with the PS3, since it's more of a hardcore system, doesn't have that issue?

Does that sound sane at all?

Back to normal between the Wii and PS3. I shudder to think what's going to happen when Wii Fit releases over there.

There's no holiday bump going on people. There is no holiday to bump it. There could be a few factors, last week included pay day, DQ4, incoming Wii fit\Basara 2, and so on. People aren't shopping for Christmas here, lol.
Every year sales begin to rise from the norm in late November to peak in late December or early January. If it's not the beginning of holiday sales, it's a hell of a coincidence.

EDIT: Or perhaps you merely object to the term "holiday" as opposed to something like "seasonal"?

If the PS3 can stay within 10k units per week for the rest of the year then I think it will have a very good chance of being japans number one console in a few years. I didnt think the price cut would make the difference it had especially since the old 20 was more or less the same price.

I dunno if I'd call it seasonal either, there doesn't seem to be anything that would cause such a thing now. There was a 3 day weekend, but it wasn't a big shopping day.

Wow, little surprised at the Wii figures. Wii being ahead of PS3 doesn't change much really (except the tone of this thread): the two systems are running neck-and-neck either way.

Exactly as I predicted.

Also, Christopher, last week the exact same thing happened. Famitsu showed PS3 way higher than Wii, MC showed it very close. Not that your scenario wouldn't happen, as it would, but it isn't how it did happen.

Get thee back to the OT if you aren't going to pay attention!

Did you just ask for "sauce" on GAF?

Dude. :lol
Oh come on. It's not like GAF hasn't stolen it's fair share of memes from 4chan.

It was unconscious. I blame the porn, it got me into the mentality.

And to the dude that brought forth the sauce, yea the Lord sayeth it is good.

Justified.

I think we should stop the posting of Famitsu numbers except long term
it would stop this very thread next week being a danger zone from Tuesday - Wednesday!!

I like having both. Between the two, we get a much more accurate picture. Why anyone would want less information is beyond me.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Agree. Plus, I'm an impatient man so getting Famitsu numbers Wednesday morning is very nice.

You deserve a nicer looking logo than that, PantherLotus. Not sure what it should be, tho.

I think it just needs to be smaller. I apologize that it needs to be there at all, honestly.

So if Japan has no holiday season, why the increase in system sales? (Despite the PS3 and Wii effectively killing the PS2.)

They do, just not in the middle of november.

All due respect, but we see an increase in sales across the board every year around this time. Call it whatever you want.

(same thing in the US -- the gift giving holiday isn't for 4 more weeks, but sales have already picked up)

Less information is how we keep the proles from getting out of control.

SMG did worse than numbers in famitsu :x At least Idol Dogs didn't beat it.
Ps3 fared worse than the wii oin this chart too. I've read famitsu is more accurate so I wouldn't sweat it. Either it is clear that sony...throu ps3 psp and psp...is resurgent in japan...can't complain about that when u think about the implications for gaming from that region.

Sorry guys,

Super busy with work, so my report will have to go up tomorrow. But here's a preview:

1. There are plenty of copies of W11 for PS3.

2.There is not a single copy of B:UC left in my town. Every copy, new or used has been sold.

3. I talk to some people both about Mario Galaxy sales and piracy on the PSP. Interesting stuff.

Doesn't look like you been reading MC threads for too long, things heat up every year at the end of November, it's nothing new.

I'm not saying it doesn't I just dont think its for the reasons you guys think it is.

It's just a seasonal thing, everything else is a bonus. What do you think the reason is?

Edit: Oh you think it's because of DQ4 and stuff? It could be, but even if DQ4 wasn't released, everything will still rise, it happens every year.

Cool, can't wait, especially items 2 and specifically 3 from above.

I think we should keep both numbers. Neither Famistu or MC track 100% of sales, so having more than one set of numbers gives us perspective. Anyway, as has already been mentioned, the two come out very similarly in totals.

Anyway, at this week's rate, the Wii will have exceeded the GC's LTD in ~6 weeks (at the 58 week point). Too bad, I was hoping it could do it in just a year.

Edit: Oh, and what was the Xbox's LTD before MC stopped tracking it? Wanna see how long it'll take for 360 to completely blow it out.

They can lose up to another 520k of ground for the next year, in addition to already being ~2.5 million behind, and still come back? Well, I suppose if PS3 averaged a 20k lead each week from there on out it would only take 150 weeks, just shy of three years ("a few"). Can't quite call it impossible, but the outlook isn't looking too hot.

How long until DS hardware passes PS2 hardware worldwide?

Worldwide? Probably another 3 years or so if it keeps up its current pace.

ethelred said:
Worldwide? My guess would be "never."

What's the DS target for March, 80m? And the PS2 would be at 130m, correct?
