amazing for PSP and GT5.

not so good for Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll. is the game any good?
I'd like to know more too. Famitsu score is 9, 8, 8, 7, but I don't take that magazine seriously.

Donkey Kong, right? PS3 has a tales game (port) and not much else besides GT5 as the big gun I believe.
Gundam Musou 3, probably won't sell more than 200K though.

*shrugs* Guess you can't say omg bombed similar to FFXIII but its still a good decline. I could say latest low and mid tier PS3 software doing great led me to believe high tier could also be improving but doesn't seem to be the case yet. In examples, the likes of old traditional million sellers like Mingol, GT, Musou, WE, FF won't reach PS2 heights on PS3 just yet...but lower tiers do have a chance, it'll be interesting to see if Tales of Xillia takes it back to 500k-territory.
Which low/mid tier PS3 games are selling better than back in the PS2 days?

Maybe there are more, but they are few and far between.
Since console gaming is in decline in Japan, it's much easier to underperform when the previous game did a million on the PS2, cause let's be honest, how many million sellers are there on the PS3? One and it takes a 2 million seller from the PS2 era to do that.

Looking at GT5, it will probably do MGS4 numbers in the end or slightly better depending on it's legs, maybe closer to 800k.

My bad.

200k would be a fantastic performance. It would shorten the current 270k gap by a good 100k. But the final four weeks of the year might prove to be not enough to surpass the DS LTD.

Last year, DS did around 110k, 140k, 190k and 220k during December. I agree that it is one year older and that those numbers could be down YoY in a prudent forecast but it still would require PSP to frankly lift up its past year sales to take the crown.

Unlikely.

You might want to edit that and replace 'LTD' with 'YTD.'

Unless you really think the PSP will sell 15+ million in the next four weeks ;)

Probably less than the rest of the series. The install base of the PS3 is much smaller, and the situation in Japan isn't helping.

I think Sony did indeed catch ground on Nintendo but overall, the situation is balanced. And with the 3DS incoming, I think momentum will shift in Nintendo's favour again.
To be honest I think the DS has just oversaturated.

I mean, it sold 10 million more than the PS2 and continues to sell pretty darn well even without taking into account that it has been out for so many years and a successor is just on the horizon.

Let's discuss the context :

PSP's last 4 weeks in 2009 :

71.292
74.962
82.454
109.993

DS' last 4 weeks in 2009 :

113.793
137.566
183.347
213.109

Last week this year, DS sales were at 111.532. The DS sales at 56.457 this week mark a 50% decrease. PSP is up 81% given the fact that it sold 42.648 this week last year.

If we scale the sales with this rudimentary knowledge, we obtain sales around :

57'000
68'000
91'000
106'000

for DS, and :

270'000 (based on Chris' prediction)
133'000
147'000
200'000

for PSP for the four remaining weeks of 2010.

This is a worst case scenario I should say that doesn't take in account any trend or sales of the past. In this precise very advantageous case for the PSP, sales crown goes indeed to it for a 150k margin YTD. But these numbers, as I said, are unlikely and I think you would agree.

GT 5 numbers are not bad and from what we know people hardly knew it was even out .
I see it getting to a million maybe in a year and best hit release .

Next week going to be MH3 with it's crazy numbers .
PS3 and PSP sales were also good.

My position would probably be that PS3 software as a category has improved its performance dramatically (which is why we've seen so many low and mid-tier success stories) but that independently of that, almost every top-tier franchise we've seen on the system has been undergoing its own franchise decline. FF has been on a downward path regardless of the PS3, and I expect GT5 would've underperformed in 2010 regardless of the PS3's specific sales history to date.

The big-ass book is just one factor in Ni No Kuni's localisation issues.

Surely they've simply missed the boat on the DS in the west. The DS will live on after the 3DS has launched, but Level 5 are only just getting around to releasing the first Inazuma Eleven game in Europe.

Didn't say more, I said doing great/reaching PS2 heights. Examples go from DMC4, RE5 to Basara, ACE:R, Yakuza, MGS, latest Gundam, Macross, Ar Tonelico, Atelier...unlike PS3 first years where everything seemed poised to post declines no matter their size, right now your average low-mid title actually has a good chance to do similar numbers as those you'd have had/expected to have on the PS2.

Yeah, there's little top-tier stuff anyway, we can't prove it on a regular basis (for example right now any top-tier PS3 games seem far away other than SS Musou 6 which got turned into mid-tier last time). So while I'd agree that PS3 is probably a healthier platform than before for top-tier stuff, there's still no proof since that type has been scarce and prone to diminishing popularity. To the naked eye, PS3 still has to prove itself to be able to host top-tier stuff in PS2 fashion.

Nooooo, I did piss poor :-(

Too bad that MHP3 won't be able to break Poké's first week record. It would have been a beautiful king. I mean those queues are phenomenal. Imagine if Tokyo had the same weather as Europe. I bet my ass they would still be there.

Yay, I guess I did okay. Overshot SRW L though. I was expecting an decent increase over the last game because of the inclusion of the Macross Frontier, but I guess there's a limit to how much more MacF stuff people want in games. Probably would have done much better if Banpresto wasn't so cheap and actually put voice into the DS SRWs, but still it's an increase over the previous title.

White Knight Chronicles Dogma Wars isn't the only new challenger in Feb, Tales of the World Radiant Mythology 3 has an announced release date of 10th Feb now. More Feb/Mar challengers are getting announced now. Should be pretty crowded by the time 2011 actually comes around.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the iphone version killed their sales. You already have a very small audience, and then you give them a $10 version for months and later try to sell them a better version for $75. The hardcore shmup players in that audience will bite, but I'm willing to bet the casual shmup fans are happy with the iphone version and passed on it.

There's nothing wrong with Cave doing iphone ports, but if they're smart they will do them AFTER the more expensive console version and not months before.

Because Capcom can't afford to piss retailers off right now, I guess. It's the same with the spin-off game too. It took ages for MHP2G to come out on PSN :/ Meanwhile, Namco has released God Eater Burst on PSN, Square Enix has released Lord of Arcana, and Sega is gonna release PSO2 Infinity. Not forgetting the fact that their retail shipment sold out within 2 hours. Capcom made a big mistake with this one. That said, the PSN servers would never have been able to meet demand.

I have to play devil's advocate here for a little bit. Why would Capcom want to give up the free PR that comes with huge line ups and sold out posters in shops, which creates a chain reaction and builds up even more demand, just for a PSN release to satisfy a bunch of suckers
PSP Go owners :(
?

They really wouldn't want to in this case. When Peace Walker came out, Konami was very in-your-face about it on their own accord, so they could have afforded the digital release. Capcom threw a countdown in Shibuya and let the fans do the work for them. :p

I think for Peace Walker, Konami sorta had to do it because they announced it at E3 in support of the PSP Go when that was announced. There was probably an understanding from that point on that if the game was not playable on the PSP Go, there would be some serious questions asked about Konami's perception to the public.

PSP Go owners :(
?
You're actually just trolling the PSP Go rather than playing devil's advocate. Digital downloads via PSN existed way before the PSP Go came out. The biggest failing of the PSP Go was in its pricing.

If the PSN release would only satisfy a bunch of suckers, how would the lines be affected anyway?
