Thinking about it, even if Bravely Second (slightly?) underperforms, Square Enix could pull a Bamco (Project X Zone) and greenlight a sequel with the western audience in mind.

Thats probably giving them too much credit, but hey GLASS HALF FULL

I won't bet on it.T_T Considering how even the first BD is brought to the west by Ninty rather than S-E themselves.T_T

In a situation like Project X Zone, how would funding for that work?
Does Bandai Namco give it directly to Monolith Soft, is Nintendo putting up some for Monolith Soft? Would the budget be higher than if Bandai Namco were to go internally or if Monolith Soft were independent?

PREDICTION LEAGUE MAY 2015

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from Apr 27 to May 31):

[3DS] Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. (33 days) - 420000
[WIU] Xenoblade X (33 days) - 98000
[WII+WIU] Dragon Quest X Version 3 (32 days) - 60000
[PS4] Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD (18 days) - 39000
[PS4+XBO] The Witcher 3 (11 days) - 35000
[3DS] Hatsune Miku Project Mirai Deluxe (4 days) - 60000
[WIU] Splatoon (4 days) - 38000

Thinking about it, even if Bravely Second (slightly?) underperforms, Square Enix could pull a Bamco (Project X Zone) and greenlight a sequel with the western audience in mind.

Thats probably giving them too much credit, but hey GLASS HALF FULL

Considering that 3DS will be dead in late 2016 onwards, SQEX could probably bring the IP on mobile, since Western markets are shifting towards these platforms from handheld.

so XCX officially releases in 2 days...wonder when we'll get a report on that

Whenever we get numbers for week 18. Not quite sure when that'll be since there'll be GW right in the middle of it all (April 29th to May 5th, actual holidays are April 29th / May 3-4-5th). So maybe May 6th (same day as Nintendo financials btw). But my money's on May 7th or 8th.

As for this week's numbers, 4Gamer.net posted that notice:

次回の「ゲームソフト週間販売ランキング+」は,2015年4月29日が祝日となるため,4月30日0:00に掲載を予定しています。

So April 30th at 12AM instead of April 29th at 10PM... two hours late then. No idea about Famitsu, didn't see any notice on their website, but since April 29th's a public holiday, they're probably going to be late too.

True, I agree with your larger points, but those are western properties at its core (developed & catered to that audience); the same could not be said for Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest for that matter where Japan's critical and commercial success are its priority.

I think that's why Square Enix diversified the way it did with the Eidos acquisition as they saw the writing on the wall; they needed to be a global player to thrive in the gaming medium - FF, KH, DQ were not going to provide that leg-up; Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Deus Ex did.

It's so odd to speak about the marketplace currently, where a decade ago Japan was leading the charge, and Final Fantasy & Kingdom Hearts were some of the biggest properties in gaming; now the opposite could be said where the West is leading the industry with the likes of those mentioned above.

To be fair, no Japanese company has been able to capitalize that market. Only Nintendo has 10m+ sellers worldwide. But I do think FF Record Keeper can be put in that category, at least in a comparable way, given how successful is.
Right, I mean, there's not a great example of another third party Japanese company doing a better job.

I think Capcom had the opportunity to be that company, but ended up blowing it in the end. Resident Evil 5 did 6.7 million copies, a lot of that with healthy legs (as many major blockbusters have), and still managed to get 6.1 million copies of Resident Evil 6 shipped out the door despite the horrendous critical rating: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

If they had nailed an ~85-90+ type game, the sales upside could have been very significant. Regardless, this was a very strong follow-up on Resident Evil 4 which did 3.9 million between the PS2 and GCN versions (and 2 million later on the Wii edition, but it's harder to tell how many of those were repurchases).

We also saw a good rise in many of their early generation titles like Devil May Cry 4 at 3 million (up from 1.7 million for DMC3) and Street Fighter IV at 3.3 mlilion (up from Street Fighter Alpha 3 at 1 million - a 1998 game - as the last SF title to break the 1 million mark prior).

Their new IPs had solid starts for the time as well with Dead Rising 2 getting up to 2.9 million and Lost Planet 2 hitting 1.8 million.

After that though everything starts performing notably worse, most franchises take a downward spiral, and their best new IP following is Dragon's Dogma at only 1.3 million, which is lower than even Dead Rising 1 at 1.8 million or Lost Planet 1 (360 version only) at 1.5 million.

These days they can barely even release a major retail game on consoles.

Namco has limited success where the goal is "big" sales (like 1-2 million) for little titles. Konami saw PES fall to pieces and Metal Gear was static (though if they had released a game like Ground Zeroes back in 2011-2012 I think there would have been large potential). Sega barely exists in the console market anymore. Koei Tecmo might as well be a non-entity on the worldwide scale. Square Enix at least still has some brand strength sitting around and unlike the other mentioned companies does have a successful Western division to try and take advantage of console polarization.

And yes, I'd also agree that we have seen many of these publishers end up having success in the places where their own market polarized. Monster Hunter is a major title on 3DS (though Capcom is *really* just riding on this at this point). Square Enix has acquired a number of mobile hits while still having a respectable traditional presence. Koei Tecmo is getting bigger signings than ever. Namco's seas of smaller games strategy is working both in traditional and mobile. Sega is very happy with their mobile performance as well and expanded strongly into PC digital in the West.

However, I can't help but feel there was a collectively missed opportunity for at least one of them to actually keep their Japanese branches chugging overseas, but perhaps in the end it doesn't matter.

I am not seeing the PS4 matching the PS3 in sales in Japan this gen.

I should make up the difference in gains in NA. Europe should perform similar to last gen.

The marketplace has changed greatly, as you brought up, and Square Enix knows the era of selling 10 million copies of each new entry of Final Fantasy is quite frankly over.

As a result, they diversified their portfolio to reflect those changes:

- HD Games (Final Fantasy XV - 6 million WW estimate)
- Online Games (Final Fantasy XIV - 500k subscribers)
- Mobile Games

I'm not surprised nor shocked that Bravely Default didn't sell as much as its predecessor. It took too long for the sequel to get out, and frankly the original game left much to be desired - it would of been better it were have been re-purposed as a mobile game.

which era was that since it never happened?

When do the rankings for the Japanese PSN store change? I dont notice Neptunia VII in the PS4's store top 20 and that doesnt seem right.

listen to the mad man
As I mentioned earlier, one cannot expect a Final Fantasy mainline game to sell as it previously has back in the PS2 (21 million JP) & PS3 era (11 million JP) - the marketplace has changed vastly since then. Each mainline game X (almost 3 million), XIII (2 million+) have declined in Japan, in part due to the console install base (and critical reception).

Haven't posted in one of these threads in a few years, but why are you using LTD console sales to extrapolate something software sales when software sells 80%+ of its sales in the first year? Shouldn't you use Life-to-Release figures for each game? What was the PS2 at when FFX released? What was the PS2 at when FFXII released? What was the PS3 at when FFXIII released? I'm also not convinced the overall hardware number is even relevant because attach rate doesn't stay consistent across install base and software sales don't scale linearly with it. Some of this is because some people buy hardware and then drop out from being an active consumer (or buy multiple units of hardware), while some of it is that late buyers are different types of consumers than early buyers.

We will most likely see the same thing happen with the PS4, where LTD will most likely be half of the PS3, and XV will suffer as a result (1.2 million is my guess).

What will the PS4 be at when FFXV releases?

So DQH is now over 810k according to Famitsu.

I wonder if the second game will do anything like this. Unfortunately I think it'll suffer the same fate every second spin off Musou game does.
