the 3DS came out way too early imo. they should have waited until more software was ready. the NGP wasn't even going to launch head-to-head like the PSP did against DS so there wasn't pressure to rush the launch.
The original idea for early launch was correct. Create a big (Nintendo expected) userbase before competitors.

Sorry mate... what's the meaning of 00. after the sells of the week?

01. / 01. [NDS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 - Professional (Square Enix) {2011.03.31} - 43.886 00. / 454.781 (-40%)

...and thanks for all fish :D

Mario Kart didn't became this massive until the DS installment so it wasn't a savior at the time either and 3D Mario has been much less popular than 2D Mario.
Super Mart Kart sold 3.82m in Japan. The franchise started huge, then dipped.

How many units did DQM Joker 2 sell again? How much is added in content for Joker 2 Professional? I'm surprised it's selling this many units cause I thought it was just a slight update but apparently not.

Joker 2 - 1,283,423

The Professional version includes over 100 new monsters to tame, new regions and abilities.

I'm not sure what was added, but non-Pro Joker 2 is at about 1.3 million, actually a small step down from the first Joker's 1.5.

EDIT: We all must've been waiting to pounce for an easy question.

Probably a glitch in the system. Maybe a search for " / " took both the ranking and the sales totals to determine whether to add the "00."?

1. This has made the round on all the Japanese blogs, but just putting this out here if someone can do something with these numbers:

planetarian Charity edition psp had a sell-in of 16,663, according to the developers site, minus set fees, this makes profits from the game of 22,415,069yen. The game had a price of 3000yen(2000 yen lower then a blockbuster psp title). I begin to see how a company like IF can stay in business only selling 9,000 copies of a game.

2. Are we doing predictions this week? - This week looks to be the most active for the next 3-4 weeks.

I wouldn't draw many conclusions from it. Lets see if I can explain that title a bit more:
- Its a visual novel from Keys, released on PC in 2004
- Prototype releases it on PS2 in 2006, selling 8,170 copies first week (not seen again) at 2940Y.
- Prototype releases it on PSP in February 2009, only in a couple of fan events.
- Prototype releases the PSP version for download on PSN in August 2009.
- Now, Prototype does a general release for PSP (with the PS2 boxart) to donate the money to Red Cross. Its labeled Charity Version, its a one-off production and it costs 3000Y.
That 16,663 must be the first and only shipment, and those 22m yen the money Prototype is doing to donate to Red Cross, unless I'm assuming too much.

This week doesn't look very exciting for predictions (although if more people voice their interest we can certainly do them), the following week looks a bit better, then the Yakuza of the End week and specially 6/23.

Yeah, I know the history of the game, the actual situation surrounding how/why it sold doesn't matter, it's the fact we know the shipment and the profit numbers.

I'm putting this out there as this is the first time(I think) we've seen exact shipment and profit numbers on an individual game, perhapes can use it as a reference for per unit actual profit made on psp games by developers.

I was explaining so everyone knows what we're talking about :p

I'm not sure if their wording is more specific but those units at that price should generate 50m yen, from that the retailers take a cut, then Sony...and we don't know if Prototype is taking a production/distribution cut or if they are eating those expenses and giving their entire cut to donation. Of course even if we knew exact breakdown we'd only have a super niche title breakdown, using it as a general rule for every PSP title wouldn't necessarily tell the real picture.

I think I'm the only one who cares about this, but...

The article goes into a bit more detail: http://www.4gamer.net/games/130/G013046/20110511054/

Companies that helped out
Sega(Distributor) - Give extra special wholesale percentage rate
JC2(printing company) - assisted with printing fees

11,469,977is prototype's(and Cybelle(programing company) full profits from the game.
10,945,092 is visual arts(the copy right holder) royalties

Result: Thanks to the cooperation of these folks; Excluding manufacture and distribution costs, the entire price of the games go to charity: 22,415,069

That's weird. When I'll have access to the database I'll see what went wrong.

Sales must be abysmally low for Steel Diver to rank second.

And Doki Doki Suikoden is probably a bomb, poor Irem :(

The new Irem game got pretty poor reviews, and likely did under 10k (given the abysmal legs Final Promise Story displayed - and its higher ranking).

My lord, this will most likely be the worst week on record top 20 combined sold less then 170K. due to no.20 being at 3.4k~ I can''t imagine the top 100 to be higher then the lowest week we have on record.

Chris1964 said:
Maybe Create has stated that the lowest week ever they have tracked is the week {2001.10.15 - 2001.10.21} with top 100 software sales being 297.843.

A sliver of hope: 360 is doing amazing compared to how they have done the rest of the year(exclude golden week sales)

Yeah, that's even worse than I thought, and I was counting on a May debacle...

Coming closer to post-Slim low record, 17,175. Might keep its head above that during GW but doubtful for May.

| WII | 7.866 |
New low record for Wii and not way off PS3 own low 7,438 (not counting SKU shifting weeks).

Other than the curious case of PSP, low HW overall and its only going to get uglier in May me thinks.
Basically PS3 new low post-Slim by quite a good mile, Wii lowest ever and lower than PS3 own low not counting SKU transitions.

Should also be mentioned that DS didn't go under 20k in 2005 (PSP went 1 week below 20k in all 2005, 19.043 in one July week).

Rather dramatic week-on-week drops there - PSP only looks OK because it was coming off a bigger high.

I guess is just a post-holiday slump? A taking of breath?

The percentage drops aren't much worse than the previous two years.
Absolute figures are much, much worse though.

I was going to say maybe the PSN being down for so long was the cause of the PS3 numbers dropping, then I saw the Wii numbers.

Everything looks dead except the PSP. Damn.

Yeah, that's because everything else is lacking in the software department at the moment. =/

Doesn't seem like any company has a quick fix solution to this.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Steel Diver did kinda... Bad :(

What's the next big game for the PS3 and PSP btw?

What a slump. Wonder how next week's sales will compare.

PS3: Ryu ga Gotoku: Of the End (June 9)
PSP: Final Fantasy Type-0? Doesn't have a clear release date beyond summer though. Maybe Danball Senki (June 16) if Level-5 can work some magic.

Alrus

Danball Senki should sell decently. Still unless Level 5 manage to convince retailers, I expect the first shipment to be relatively low after Ni No Kuni and Inazuma 3.

It'll probably be delayed again though :p
