Why everything is so low this week?
The new releases aren't exactly top notch.

And wow at Wii's lowest week yet. Nintendo does right to bring the new console in a year or so.

And the 3DS still sales pretty low compared to the PSP.

Wow what is happening to the PSP all of a sudden? What game is making it beat 3ds?
The fact it has games is the reason it has been trouncing the 3DS for months. There's absolutely no reason to buy a 3DS at this moment in time.

I guess I was dreaming or something when I heard Nintendo, prior to the 3DS launch, say something along the lines of pacing 3DS software so there's no drought. The exact opposite is happening. Did I just imagine that?

Anyway with how abysmal the 3DS is doing, I do wonder if DS developers abandoned that platform a little too soon. How can you just ignore such a large userbase? I guess though, if you focus on the PSP (which is where the lion share of the software pie is gravitating towards) then it's not a bad thing at all.

Wow, all hardware took such a plummet. Amazing. Everything dropped about 50% WOW.

Edit - And not a single game above 20.722?

WTF Japan?

I don't remember that, but I do recall Iwata saying that Nintendo had projects already completed that they wouldn't release because they feared they would interfere with the sales of third party software. Their extremely light release schedule is to allow third parties to breath.

The problem is no one has purchased a Nintendo platform for third party games in nearly 2 decades. Their software pushes the hardware, and the kind of third party software that would push any hardware is no where to be seen on 3DS. All it has had are B-list to D-list titles from third parties. Nothing of note at all. It is very alarming that Nintendo saw that kind of schedule and thought it would be okay to release the platform with the exact same tier of B-list to D-list titles.

Yeah I agree. If they really did want third parties to breath, then I'd imagine they would want the third parties to provide support for the system that is actually worth a damn. When the highest profile third party title is a port then something is obviously wrong. This is when it actually calls for a high profile first party title to lead the way.

I guess in essence, they were secretly hoping that the appeal of the hardware coming after the hugely successful DS would be enough and that the 3D effect would be a huge selling point. But rarely is hardware on its own a selling point. You'd think Nintendo of all people would know that software was key. The 3DS software line-up is probably the worst from Nintendo in terms of demonstrating what makes the hardware tick.

Well, sales had been boosted by Golden Week for a bit, but that is over and there was no compelling software this week.
Weeks after holidays are always slow,
Add in the fact the weather has been rainy and dreary all week long, it's week before pay day and you get a week with sales like this.

The disaster happened, it really messed up their release schedule(can't talk about the west though)

We've gone over this so many times... but the pack-in software was suppose to be the killer "WII SPORTS" soft, too bad most mainstream users don't even seem to know about them.

Question: 3ds lost a lot of steam and sales have slow down across the board, If steel diver had been released on time, how do you think sales would have been different?, back when there was still momentum for the system

It's also possible that OOT 3D and SF64 just weren't ready in time for launch, and the "cede the launch window to third parties" talk is something of an excuse.

It's certainly arguable that Nintendo should have launched the system around June with OOT and the eShop in place, but they promised their investors that it would be out by the end of the last fiscal year.

Wii Sports wasn't a pack-in software in Japan though and that was a smart choice, so why go this way? I guess it would fit into Nintendo not wanting the lions share of software early on. It's sad though because when I tried the system the AR games were by far the biggest selling point for me. But even here (i.e. in the UK) they seem to be a non-factor for the most part.

The problem with the AR games is that they've been done a lot before and have had success. There isn't the same wow factor as with motion controls.

Seems like that was a bad idea. Delaying it to june might have been a better choice for the general public. I'm fine with my 3DS and Samurai warriors but i do know a console needs that IT game right from the start.

I don't wonder. They absolutely did. Not to the 3DS, but to the PSP. Why they decided to ignore the DS and go whole hog on the PSP a couple of years ago has been a big question.

They've been moving that direction for a couple of years now. It still doesn't make sense why they'd do so, though, unless it was just a lot cheaper to produce software for. A late coming true of the N64/PS1 comparison to NDS/PSP with cartridges vs. disks?

The Wii needs a price cut right NOW, or at least make a bundle Nintendo!! . It still at 20.000Y with no pack-in software

I think Final Promise Story needs to sell better if it is going to reach the 150K they wanted to sell.
Why would a One Piece game make the 3DS explode? Do you have any reasoning behind that besides the name recognition?

The One Piece game is a port of the two Wii games, don't expect a tonne from it.

Also, Final Promise Story won't reach 150k in this release.

Speaking of which, has a price cut for the Wii even been announced for Japan? If not, how weird is that -- esp. considering the price has been dropped already in Europe and NA.

Also, why did we seemingly learn nothing new as a result of the recent NOJ retailer briefing/meeting? I thought for sure we'd hear release dates for Rhythm Tengoku Wii at least :(

Anytime a dropping system has two weeks in a row close (for whatever reason), someone will say or ask if it's stabilizing. No reason to get any hopes up. The system has no back catalog of games, much less system-selling ones, so it's unlikely to be real stable. DS was pretty stable through most of 2005 after both Nintendogs and Brain Training were out. Nintendogs is not a new system seller (especially not for a 25K yen system), and there haven't been any other expected hits released for the system.

Nintendo needs to scrap this "trust third-parties to start us on the right foot" insanity for Wii 2's release. Work with third-parties to not step on each other? Sure. Rely on them to push the system out of the gate hard? Seems problematic coming after the Wii.

The series has surged in popularity even more so since the release of the Wii games. Given the great sales of Gigant Battle, I think we can expect pretty good sales from the port.

Gigant hit 275k on a platform with a userbase that has 30 million more participants than the 3DS. With One Piece being a series so popular with children, and family I do not think a port on an expensive new handheld will do all that well. The demographic who buys One Piece games aren't on the 3DS yet.

Next week's releases {2011.05.26}
[WII] Pandora's Tower: Until I Return to Your Side (Nintendo)
Wow Pandora finally coming. Really looking forward to that. Wii can definitely over
10K
milestone that week.

I always think that it is stupid for Nintendo to expect 3rd party to help them a lot for 3DS. If they didn't do it after DS & DSL, why would they do it for 3DS ? Because of 3D ? Lol.

As someone who owned 7 DS systems, and who decided not to buy 3DS, because of 3D, price and battery life, I really wished Nintendo have learnt from Sony's PS3 mistake.

Also, why did we seemingly learn nothing new as a result of the recent NOJ retailer briefing/meeting? I thought for sure we'd hear release dates for Rhythm Tengoku Wii at least :(
They gave out dates for Goldeneye and Kirby DS. Rhythm Tengoku must be after June then.

I expect it to do okay just because it's the only meaty 3ds release in a while. So a bit more than 100k LTD I guess.

And why is Nintendo taking so long to release Just Dance 2? I mean there's barely any localization work to be done on it. Unless they're getting japan centric songs on it?

The problem is no one has purchased a Nintendo platform for third party games in nearly 2 decades.
I'm an exception to that rule. Every piece of Nintendo hardware I own is for third-party titles, as typically I can't stand / don't care about 95% of what comes out of Nintendo. Out of the 140 DS games I own, I'm betting at most 10 of those are Nintendo titles.

In a recent 'Iwata Asks', Iwata and Miyamoto recalled that Yamauchi referred to the hardware as "a box that people buy so they can play the software". Miyamoto and Iwata then laughed :/

With regards to third parties not being able to compete with Nintendo, in the 16bit era, both consoles had really strong first party software. Back then, it was believed that strong first party games drove hardware sales, which then drove the sales of third party games. Nintendo are fools for falling for the apologist bullshit that third parties have been peddling to their investors.

Even the Wii games sold 200k and 180k respectively. At the least, Unlimited Cruise SP is going to clear 100k.

They've been moving that direction for a couple of years now. It still doesn't make sense why they'd do so, though, unless it was just a lot cheaper to produce software for. A late coming true of the N64/PS1 comparison to NDS/PSP with cartridges vs. disks?
Do PSP games retail at a higher price? Also, the increased graphical fidelity gives their marketing people more to work with when selling the game.

One Piece 3DS will do well for 3DS software, and much better than the Naruto game. I just don't think it'll be that big, or much of a hardware mover (though I'd expect an increase if ever so slight).

However, I did predict a below 20k opening week for El Shaddai... :p
I was clearly just predicting what it would sell past week 1.
