Are we predicting for next week? Lots of minor titles and just one or two big ones, although basically most will chart given how low is the current market. There's One Piece and Troy Musou PS3 as easy choices, then Pandora's Tower, Treasure Report, Memories Off, Akai Katana Shin, Troy Musou 360...

I am surprised monster hunter 4 hasn't been announced. I wonder where it will go since it is definitely 2012 winter title. I would be surprised if it wasn't on Wii hd, ps3, and xbox 360. I don't see any positives for it to release straight to handhelds. Kind of irrelevant since this is a media create sales though. I don't see nintendo 3ds sales increasing until there is a price drop. Winter year holidays have always been nintendo strongest month but why would be buying this through january-october?

If the game is still selling in the top for software then I think it doesnt really make sense to be announcing the next entry just yet.

Pachinko business is worth way too much money, IREM isn't going to go away for a long time in that respect

Since I didn't get any answer in the other thread let me try here in the sales thread:

What are your over forecasts for Monster Hunter portable 3rd HD, will we see our 2nd millon ps3 title this summer?

Doubt, it'll do good but not that good. Most people who wanted to play 3rd already own it.

Now if they add new content...

Only 5,000 copies of Night of the Sacrifice? That sucks.

I actually have one point of confusion I'd like cleared up: does Media Create and/or Famitsu factor in Amazon sales into their totals, or do they track physical store retail only? I would assume they do since Amazon is one of the biggest movers of games in Japan, but I'm still curious (since NPD is so awful about tracking sales data that isn't direct retail on this side of the pond).

Also, nice to see Fate officially breaking the six-figure mark. I still hope against hope we might see that over here.

I'd also love to join in on the "aging society and effects on games" discussion but I need some damn sleep :p Thanks for the graph, though, FFDOG, I've been wondering about certain hard numbers for a while. Do you have a direct source for that?

smurfx said:
so is console gaming basically dead in japan? will japanese companies abandon them for good and just focus on handhelds and cell phones? are there any japanese companies doing really well on consoles?

It's possible console gaming is dead; the public in Japan just isn't reacting well to the idea of set-top boxes at all anymore, not when easy-to-store handhelds seem just as capable of producing a fun experience (and with stuff like the PSP-3000 and PSPgo, you can even plug in to your TV if you really care THAT much about big picture) and not with the Internet working just fine on phones, insofar as they're concerned. Big box stuff just isn't seen as being quite as necessary anymore for a lot of folks, especially with wages and job opportunities of younger people stagnant and little room to store big, bulky consoles when you can keep your DS or PSP in your briefcase, backpack or purse.

There's a goddamn reason Sony is making a lot of noise about getting PSP games onto the PS3, let's put it that way.

Hilariously, though, I know Gust is doing well enough for themselves on the PS3; Atelier Rorona, Atelier Totori and Ar Tonelico 3 all apparently managed six-figures and weren't that expensive to put together.

The first part is just to entertain people. He doesn't actually make stuff up. Maybe enhances the truth sometimes. The latter is just pure nonsense. He is pretty trust-worthy, and a good source of news and opinions.

Sorry, I should have made my meaning of trust-worthy more clear.

I meant that(particularly in the daily news round up) He pays no attention whatsoever as to whatever his source is valid, just posts anything that seems interesting, I've seen him link to rumor articles that were written 3 years ago as new "news"(or lately he seems to have been taken in by the "sites were you just write a lot of article, fictional or not/link to yourself to get google hits trend" scams.

I can link to you many different twitter's, but it seems most of the folks in the business side/ academic side of things are not at all fond of him(or other things that are connected with 2-chan hardware board). (Of course you get the same feelings towards kotaku on the western side of things so....)

Certainly Amazon's market is dominated by the gaming enthusiast market as opposed to the more general audience Media Create covers. But, speaking as a non-expert to the Japanese sales experts in this thread, do you think the proportion of sales Amazon has among that enthusiast market is big enough to cause a problem where Media Create consistently underreports the sales of niche games tailored to that audience and thus creates a skewed perspective on them? The last WAHP quoted several smaller developers who said their titles were more successful than the sales figures would lead one to believe.

I can't believe most of their games did that good, specially the bigger ones, but they still lost 77m yen (gaming division).

Even worse, just unfathomable to me they expect to win 210m in this new fiscal year with the sales going up from 2757m to 3800m. Just how the fuck do they plan to do that, they don't have anything big (>100k) announced yet and I can't see many titles they could be working on to beat those.

Estimates from azalyn

[PSP] Akiba's Trip (Acquire) {2011.05.19} - 50.000
[3DS] Dead or Alive: Dimensions (Koei Tecmo) {2011.05.19} - 40.000
[PSP] Gungnir: Mayari no Gunshin to Eiyuu Sensou (Atlus Co.) {2011.05.19} - 12.000

That'd be Acquire (self-published game) biggest 1st week ever. Funny bit, azalyn mentioned majority of those who purchased it pronounced it as "Akiba Strip", of course that couldn't have ever possibly been Acquire's intention at all. *Naughty, naughty*

It apparently involves Akihabara, panties, and vampire girls.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/20/akibas_trip_site/

If the pictures in famitsu are to be believed, freeing vampire maid girls of their panties against their will in Akihabara.

Kind of depends tbh, 6/7 titles are either ports or glorified ports. I don't see any of them making a real splash tbh.

Really, really terrible week for pretty much anything not named "psp". As others have already said there are many factors contributing to this downturn but it's still disheartening to see. As someone who grew up on primarily Japanese games back during the NES days my heart will always have a soft spot for the gaming industry there.

Hopefully this is just an unusually slow period and the coming weeks and months can revitalize sales to some degree.

And yeah, about that birthrate thing.. Talk about a society that needs to "get busy"!

3DS needs system sellers and only one of them fit that criteria. If 3 out of the 7 games sell over 150K this year and there are hardware bumps that will probably be considered a success with the current limited fan base.

Not to dispute the basic point, but it's actually 5 out of 7 - Pacman/Galaga are new games, with older titles from other platforms bundled in as extras IIRC.

Akiba's Trip - 58k
Dead or Alive Dimensions - 23k

http://www.4gamer.net/games/117/G011794/20110525042/

PSP 30,463
3DS 17,240
PS3 12,935
Wii 6,269
DSi LL 5,176
DSi 4,938
Xbox 360 2,186
PS2 1,129
DS Lite 158
PSP go 65

I think Dead or Alive Dimensions has the worst debut on the franchise's history. It's even lower than the DOA Xtreme rehash launched last year on psp (which did 32k first week)

Hmm, with the current releases the 3DS seems to be staying around 17-20K.

I wonder what it will go to after the current crop of games finishes releasing.

Especially after Ocarina, since I think that's the last "high profile" title in the immediate future.

Shocking sales all around.

Sony need to fix the PS3 problem before it gets worse, maybe they will cut the price at E3. ¥19,990 would work wonders for the system!

Given the $100 coupon they seem to be providing through GameStop, I suspect we'll see a $100 cut this year.

Might not happen until early Fall though.

Yeah, I think PS3 has a price cut soon to look forward to. And MonHun HD, for what it's worth, is due soon. Wonder if these things will arrive before it dips under 10k consistently.

Nintendo cut Wii's price recently, right? Or did they?

Well there was a CECH-3001A model at the FCC, so it could be a new internal revision with 32nm Cell. That would definitely pave the way for a price cut. Our internal cost breakdown of the latest PS3 puts at between ¥20,000 and ¥22,000 so there is definitely room to manoeuvre.

So 3DS hits a million units before any other system this year, time to bring out the champagne?
Next target: Overtaking Xbox 360 LTD by Christmas.
