Media Create Sales: Week 3, 2013 (Jan 14 - Jan 20)

I've yet to be able to find a single copy in any store down in Nagasaki Prefecture. While I'm sure some people are getting a little bit of stock, the game is nearly impossible to find.

It's incredible how Level-5 screwed up the launch of this game... It could have been easily above 250k at this rate. Let's hope people bought this on the eShop, and the interest will be there once new stocks will be available.

Well, on the plus side, we can start a series of Wii U and Vita buddy cop films.

The plotline revolves around two failed cops from once major police families trying to move up in the department and show they can live up to their legacy.

Not sure if it needs a price cut tbh; but we'll see. Special Offers and what not should be more effective. Maybe a free game download thing like NoE did with 3DS.

I don´t know the exact price for Japan, but if it´s like in Europe/US it´s too high for what´s in the box. The basic version should be 250 €/$ with NSMBU bundled in, Premium 50 more, also with NSMBU bundled in.

Wii U not doing well at all.

Outside of NSMBU (which is being beaten out by NSMB2 in terms of visibility) and MonHun (port), there really isn't anything noteworthy available in Japan. There isn't even a single non-retail game available on the eShop, and the premium package (which is the only SKU selling outside of Japan) does not include Nintendo Land.

Things will change once there is actually some content available.

1/2 is better than the 1/3 in the UK.

Victory?

There's nothing mysterious when Famitsu estimates 4k sales and the no. 20 for MC has sold 6k...
Japan doesn't like the reboot or the lost interest in this series, I guess.

WiiU's 7th week worse than Vita's...

Wow..

Same price as Vita and PS3 in Japan. Don't think they plan on dropping that anytime soon.

This is dire

I think "dire" is a little too strong of a word to describe the situation.

Last year -> This year

3DS - 80.960 -> 81.855
PS3 - 21.155 -> 19.697
WIU - ----------- 16.654
PSP - 17.181 -> 15.343
PSV - 15.219 -> 9.036
WII - 10.173 -> 2.199
360 - 1.588 -> 706

This is an incredibly slow week for hardware sales. It's a natural lull.
That said, Wii U sales really should be stronger at this stage of its life.

I doubt devs will announce AAA games for either system just because Orbis/Durango exist. That's some non-sequitur logic there.

Of course not. But a industry-wide contraction and an increased reliance on "safe" IPs isn't helping consumer excitement about the new gen either.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Seeing Animal Crossing not only so high, but growing compared to last week too makes me think it will drive 3DS sales to higher level than last year even when there are no releases like right now.

that's the response to who continued claiming "flop" for Level5 initial shipments for other games.
It would have been better to overship it a little compared to the actual situation.

All these numbers (except you-know-who) are TERRIBLE.
From what I can find the PS2 was retailing for ¥16,000 in January 2006, in its 6th year on the market after the launch of the first 7th gen console.

I don't think the PS3's numbers are that bad given it's in its 7th year on the market and still at ¥25,000.

EDIT: Of course, the PS2 had sold a lot more so presumably the market was more saturated.

I have this sinking feeling that the Japanese are transitioning away from consoles entirely, and going to 3DS/smartphones for all their gaming.

I hope to be proven wrong this fall when the heavy hitters start dropping for the Wii U.

Ouch, is this game on PC too? If not capcom will port this to the PC and maybe Wii U just to grab a couple extra sales..

I've no interest in DMC, only played 3 and 4 because they were on PC and were like 3.99 during a digital sale, but I'd buy this one if it came to WiiU because simply I would love to play my U again.

What did I say some weeks ago? ;)
With Animal Crossing, Nintendo is covered in Japan for January. It will keep selling as it was a big new release.

Overshipment for Level-5 has not been a problem for retailers recently, though, otherwise we would have not see those sellthroughs for IE, PLvsAA, etc.

I was expecting/predicting that at least Japan would embrace the Wii U, these aren't good numbers for a new console, especially one that is the successor to the Nintendo Wii, the most successful home console Nintendo has ever made. 16k is bad no matter how you view it

But all is not doom and gloom, they can right the ship and perhaps the day to start doing that is today, with that Nintendo direct. Showcasing some solid titles and delivering some new services. Hopefully this is just a blip, and not a indictment of the Wii U's future

3DS still kicking ass and i dont see any console or handheld being able to overthrow it in Japan, so at least Nintendo can rest easily there.

in japan, it didn't beat the NES and SNES so the battle there is much harder.

also, how close is the PSP to beating the NES and PS1? (or did it do it already?)

I´m not expecting any console to sell above PS3 numbers in the next 5-10 years, they´ll probably won´t even reach that level.

Anyone think they're not that bad considering the game was made by non-Japanese? I wonder how much that had an impact or maybe I'm being paranoid.

And yeah, Wii U is fucked.

I'm not sure if i should be glad or sad to see the Wii U failing around the world.

Sad because i always liked Nintendo games since i started playing them years ago, glad because Nintendo has just been idiots with everything Wii U lately, whether it's the weak hardware that will definitely suffer when the other next-gen consoles will release or the lack of interesting games, and they jut got what they deserve with these 2 mistakes.

Hopefully the Nintendo Direct will show some interesting stuff, and not just Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 + 1 new game few will be interested in.

Well, doesn't look like the 3DS is gonna be going down much before Dragon Quest VII arrives. Nintendo has some pretty good spacing between most of its mid-to-high range sellers this year.

Wii U is doing not so hot, but I'm sure things will rise once there's some more games for it (the Japanese launch lineup was pretty sparse + no eShop only games).

Would be a good move, the game was dirt cheap in development and could be used to increase the perceived value without taking huge losses.

I won't call it 'dirt cheap' since it is developed by a very fixed and fluid development team (e.g. the costs of these games are long term and not budgeted per title).

However yeah it adds a lot of perceived value, people wanting Mario get it in the box.

Generally it wouldn't have much cost associated with it. Especially if we assume the game won't sell without the WiiU selling and that the positive affect of the bundle will be greater than WiiU+Mario sales individually.

Anyone think they're not that bad considering the game was made by non-Japanese? I wonder how much that had an impact or maybe I'm being paranoid.

You are being paranoid. Good Western games sell well in Japan if they go there selling something people want and actually marketing with respect instead of assuming its a product everyone wants.

Truth is, people in Japan don't fucking know. Its just presentation, style and gameplay that differ strongly - the reason it differs strongly is because if made in Japan; Japanese people are probably making - the same people who'd buy the game, making a game they like.

I have this sinking feeling that the Japanese are transitioning away from consoles entirely, and going to 3DS/smartphones for all their gaming.
It would be an interesting scenario considering the opposite appears to be occurring in Western markets (handheld contraction).

It could pose something of a dilemma for Japanese developers. Publishers with designs on the overall larger Western markets would presumably target Durango/Orbis and Wii U; while titles whose primary target market is Japan would presumably be made for 3DS. While Western third parties would put even less effort into handheld development.

Operation Raccoon City was outsourced by Capcom as well. It did much better (different genre and a legitimately terrible game, but still not an especially popular Western take on a Japanese IP).
