~900k on DS in Japan
2.98M worldwide
~450k on 3DS
1.03M worldwide as of december 2013.
So if read this correctly...
1) first two games sold more in Europe than in Japan.
2) most of the sales are from the DS game, as expected
I suppose the 450k on 3DS doesn't include the updated version from last year?
Man, I really wish Nintendo had a dedicated page on its website with super up to date sales data for each game. But that's probably too much to ask... might as well ask NPD to release sales number publicly while I'm at it
offtopic, but I think it's interesting how many english words are used in Japanese advertising in their stores.
is there proper japanese writing for the word "Nintendo" or "Playstation" or are brand names always westernized?
Wii U and PS4 have almost inverse library problems. Wii U has hit games that can drive userbase but no second/third tier software to keep hardware momentum going in between. PS4 meanwhile has plenty of software to fill it's schedule, but no real significant hardware drivers to really rocket figures (at least until SE's big two later next year). To be fair while PS4 has always had great third party support on paper it still hasn't translated to actual games that often. I mean whole last year was fucking terrible release wise for PS4. While this year has been better (And average weekly sales for PS4 have been a lot better) there still has been only like two bigger Japanese games released. DQ:H and MGSV (both were also cross gen..).
Nintendo uses the kanji reading (任天堂 for corporate stuff, or when referring to the company as an entity. The only time an end-user will (usually) see this on Nintendo products or advertising is in copyright disclaimers and whatnot. It does however appear on the back of packaging, usually near to the barcode.
Nintendo uses the latin reading (Nintendo) in its branding, such as the company and console logos.
However, Nintendo uses the katakana reading (ニンテンド(ー) when referring to the "Nintendo" brand and its consoles (ニンテンドーDS) when a logo is not used.
Nintendo 64 was written "ニンテンドウ64" (Nintendou 64), which is actually the proper reading of the company's name.
It's a bit confusing, but when spoken, it's all the same.
PlayStation is a little easier, as there are only two variants of it. It doesn't seem to be quite as consistent though, as both "PlayStation" and "プレイステーション" appear as text outside of logos in marketing materials. Possibly because the katakana version is a bit ugly.
The game is going to take off during holidays. So we've got 762.529 for Splatoon.
Famitsu digital 7/27 - 8/30
Happy Home Designer - 42,908
Cube Creator - 39,358
Battle Cats - 37,893
Dragon Quest VIII - 30,059
Splatoon - 24,254
True, and eventhough WiiU has mostly seen 1st party titles, several of those franchises are some of the strongest in the industry. Sales for both PS4 and WiiU have been low though, but i'm not sure if i think any of them has really had that much of an upper hand over the other so far.To be fair while PS4 has always had great third party support on paper it still hasn't translated to actual games that often. I wonder how much of a hurdle this is for most consumers, if the majority will eventually get two systems, or if many are skipping a purchase because they need to have two systems instead of one. I guess we'll never know.sörine;179716781 said:Wii U and PS4 have almost inverse library problems. If we could eventually get a console that combined the advantages of both systems perhaps consoles could actually make a sustained comeback in Japan?

Given that most Wii U and PS4 franchises or games are also available elsewhere, most consumers are just opting to pick up a 3DS and/or Vita instead it seems. Asking Japanese gamers to buy one console is hard enough, two consoles is a clear no go now.I wonder how much of a hurdle this is for most consumers, if the majority will eventually get two systems, or if many are skipping a purchase because they need to have two systems instead of one. Unifying the consoles into one library wouldn't stop the problem entirely but it'd probably help. In a way it seems like Nintendo's backdooring out of consoles with NX, and it's pretty obvious Sony sees no future in handhelds, so going from four to just two "platforms" in the future might help too.
Given Iwata's market-specific form factor comments, I still suspect Japan may not even get the NX console. Nintendo's skipped models locally before (2DS recently) and given how hard Vita TV bombed Nintendo might just think it's not worth bothering with. I guess it depends on how "shared" the NX library actually is though.Depending on exactly how the NX works, it'd be more like Trojan Horsing the home console space for Japan if they can transition their strong support from 3DS to NX (and gobble up a lot of the PS family exclusives (note: I don't mean making them exclusive)). Even if you cut down the platforms, Sony still won't provide any substantial IP (what they provide is western strength) for the home market and the NX could potentially position itself as a better home product (as well as only mobile product).

DQX Wii U is higher still too isn't it? Or has Splatoon passed it in the all time charts?Ōkami;179734900 said:Splatoon should be over 91k digital, highest for any console game bar Minecraft.
True, i was thinking more about the console market only, exclusive games for those and how it would change people's spending habits. If releasing less systems would mean higher sales overall (for example if one system would sell 15 million instead of two system selling 5 million each).sörine;179723156 said:Given that most Wii U and PS4 franchises or games are also available elsewhere, most consumers are just opting to pick up a 3DS and/or Vita instead it seems. Probably not, and you can probably thank mobile for that. Dedicated game systems in Japan will be going from near 75m last gen between 5 platforms to less than half that this gen. Last gen we had four systems crack 10m, this gen it'll be just one. It's not just handhelds eating consoles, it's mobile eating everything.True, i was thinking more about the console market only, exclusive games for those and how it would change people's spending habits. Where's that $199.99 Splatoon Bundle, NCL? :<
NCL needs to do everything they can in order to steal all the Vita's gaems for NX.
Those games might become mobile games though.
Or become nothing...
I know Amazon is a terrible metric, but why has Fallout 4 been in the top 3 since TGS? It's ranked 1st now ahead of MHX. Amazon exclusive or something?
2 million seller confirmed.
Fallout 4 is not Amazon Japan exclusive.Yup, right up there with Devil's Third needing multiple shipments and tracking well!

Some genres / IPs are better suited for handheld platforms (and some IPs for home platforms).
Missing out on AA/niche titles is a terrible loss for Nintendo that needs to be rectified. The important ones (MonHun clones, RPGs, stuff like that) will go there without Nintendo having to do much. It's another problem for the niche ones, but who knows how easy it is to make a port, or other incentives.
I'm still having a hard time believing that Sony will put out another new handheld. I'll expect a Vita iteration instead. Not unless Sony puts out the PSP 3 (or Vita 2?). Think about it.Sony since I like your handhelds and ecosystem and therefore want one
It might be financial unfeasible for NCL to drop the price of the WiiU, but what's so funny about a $199.99 Splatoon bundle? ?$199 Wii U bundle?
lmaooooo
