Absolute disaster week.

World of FF - disaster for a decent budget FF spinoff
Berserk - absolute disaster for musou which has been continuously dropping and dropping in sales. We're at the final death throes now. Good luck Berserk Musou 2.
Titanfall 2 - Western FPS games have been taking off in Japan doing 100k+, this one even has mecha for Japan and 20k sales. Disaster.

Poor sales for Hollow Realization - having such horrible performance on the Vita version won't have helped though.

Code:
09./00. [360] Titanfall <ACT> (Electronic Arts) {2014.04.10} (¥7.884) - 10.478 / NEW
07./00. [XB1] Titanfall # <ACT> (Electronic Arts) {2014.09.04} (¥7.884) - 8.961 / NEW
07./00. [PS4] Titanfall 2 <ACT> (Electronic Arts) {2016.10.28} (¥7.800) - 21.443 / NEW

Says a lot when Titanfall 2 on PS4 only just beats the original on 360+XB1.

Titanfall sales doesn't say anything other than EA being a terrible publisher. Releasing a multiplayer centric first person shooter within weeks of a much more popular multiplayer centric first person shooter from the SAME publisher is an amazing decision.

Don't know whether to say "that's a poor performance from SAO on Vita" or "that's 10 x more sales than it deserved for the state it was pushed out in".

Yeah... kinda meh sales. On the bright side the PS4 is on its way to be the best selling PlayStation console (YTD) in over a decade*. Sinds the PS2 sold 2,134,863 in 2005, the closest the PS3 ever got was in 2009 when it sold 1,727,041. YTD right now of the PS4 is 1,189,261, so it needs to sell 537,780 units in the coming 8 (?) weeks. Last year it sold 355,176 over that same period, meaning it needs an extra boost of 182,604 (23k a week). Dunno with FFXV, Yakuza 6 and the Pro it has a much stronger last 2 months, so it's gonna be close!

The hardware numbers being decent are kind of irrelevant since people arent buying games. And if the PAL sales thread is any indication then the west isnt going to make up for the disappointing japanese sales for games like World of Final Fantasy.

LTD comparisons will be more important than first week for most of these games. SAO is just the next Vita game that gets PS4ed.

I wish they would make a new Gundam musou instead of all these other random collaboration musous they've been doing.

Paper Mario is almost at the bottom of the Top 20 already, just two weeks in.

It's like the third franchise title (after Star Fox and Metroid) to go down in flames.

Can't really say much about the overall software performance of the PS4 in Japan and how that compares to previous generations as i don't know the numbers. There are obviously things that aren't working, like shoehorning Vita games on the platform. But that doesn't change the fact that there is an userbase there to whom games can be sold to. The Japanese publishers have to figure out what works and what not. And that imo is an interesting discussion to have, for example would a game like Monster Hunter make sense on the PS4. Who knows at this point if it would work business wise, no?

Don't know if i understand you correctly, but i was trying to compare playstation home-consoles YTD's. PS4 can't come near the best PSP years ever!

Only, unlike Metroid and Starfox, Nintendo won't let that happen. Color splash will definitely get a port, either on 3ds or NS. It will do some better numbers there and the next installment will put it back to track. Feel free to quote me in the next three or so years. :p

What he's saying is Sony had PSP selling millions during the period you're saying PS3 sold its best; whereas now they've got Vita selling < 1m per year (and coming to the end of its life) while you're saying PS3 'might' beat PS4.

aka - things are looking grim.

What has the PSP (or Vita) got to do with me pointing out that the PS4 is on course to beat the best YTD number of the PS3?

TTYD HD is the only logical step for the next game. If they do another continuation of the SS gameplay then they're just completely ignorant of what their fans want.

Berserk can't catch a break. WoFF didn't do so well. Apparently Japan still loves Kirito.

Thing is, Berserk is only "ok" since it feels far more like a reskinned musou rather than a game made for the series itself. Which is a damned shame since they do have some excellent models used in the game along with the voice work and such.

But the gameplay is basically bread & butter musou. Whats worse is the boss fights are abysmal. As its just a slug fest with nothing interesting at all going on in them. The games mechanics were not even tweaked to make the combat more bearable either as blocking is too slow to be of any use as the delay between actions and activation. Getting constantly juggled, etc.

Poor sales for Hollow Realization - having such horrible performance on the Vita version won't have helped though.

Id imagine most of the sales anyways came from preorders and day 1 folks. After that word of mouth between the core users who were fence sitters.

Since the previous game Hollow Fragment was a vita title and even that did not have what I would call exceptional performance, doubt that folks were really concerned with expecting 60 FPS from the title itself and those initial numbers show that.

Id say the sales for the current climate of the market are ok honestly. Esp for an "anime" game.

Granted $$$ spent on development is split between 2 platforms and Hollow Fragment was just on the Vita alone for its initial launch the numbers could be considered close equal if added together.
[PSV] Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (Bandai Namco, 04/24/14) – 145,029 (New)

Am curious how many digital preorders there were due to the early access that was granted to said consumers.

Wow, that is really a damn shame.

It is since the company can do good work if they want to. Which was shown with AOT and Toukiden 2. The Berserk project from what Ive seen so far with my playthrough which is around 70% most def feels like this was a rush job project outside of the time spent with crafting the character models and such.

Really is a shame since am a big fan of the series and generally do like KT games.

Still though regardless of that fans should grab the game just in hopes that we get another something down the line with the series. Music is pretty decent too.

Damn it, one month between proper reveal and release has got to be a record for a major game at retail.

I think you're right, ha ha. Looking back, I realise that it's not like there were other possible dates. Dec. 15 has the NSMB2 2DS bundle + Jikyou, Dec. 22 has Momotaro, and Dec. 29 is too late. Dec. 1 would be too early too.

Dec. 8 is just the right date to get word of mouth going in time for Christmas.

Let's not pretend here that you didn't say many times that Miitopia was probably delayed to 2017, and it was me the one who said it was releasing in December :p

Also, I think that record was for Zelda Majora's Mask. It was revealed in mid-january 2015 and launched in mid-february.
I remember some retailers complaining, but Nintendo compensated them with a big promotion.

For Wii Sports Resort things were worse than Miitopia. Retailers took preorders without knowing the official release date until 2-3 weeks before it comes out.

seems like canning the Vita version of Crows was the right decision

good job BN, I'm sure they are pleased about the excellent result they had on PS4

Actually its more the setting and genre honestly.

Granted Uppers was an original IP it didnt fair any better on the Vita.

Gon be ''fun'' to see how well the FF name can carry a mainline entry. I feel like the spinoffs have had really bad focus. WOFF should have ditched the chibi style entirely (even doe I personally have no problem with it), embraced the KH style and tried to appear as something that can stand on it's own legs and not just another FF mashup (I mean, the novelty has kinda worn off after KH, Dissidia, Theatrythm, mobile games, that Mario Party clone, MMO swag ect. ect.).

Something like Bravely Default has the right idea, I think home consoles could carry a FF game more akin to that. That said I have no idea how WOFF is doing in the west but I doubt it's a roaring success.

I know, I honestly didn't truly believe in a 2016 release until the investor meeting, ha ha. The Dec. 8th "prediction" was in the last thread (so after the meeting). I also didn't really believe it until I saw the JP Direct :p

About Miitopia, I assume that's something retailers were shown during that meeting a few weeks ago? Looking forward to pre-order data, though I assume that's a game where word of mouth/legs will be more important.

For Wii Sports Resort things were worse than Miitopia. Retailers took preorders without knowing the official release date until 2-3 weeks before it comes out.

For a second, I thought you were talking about the Wii U game, and was really confused. I imagine retailers were really annoyed, given how the Wii was selling at the time.

For those who don't know, she's the person who leaked a lot of stuff about the Switch (like when the reveal would take place, the detachable controllers...)

Monster Hunter XX is March 18th. But no, Capcom said no port. This is just another coincidence. they're jumping to PS4.

The other surprising thing about the low WOFF sales #s is the fact that the game itself was not exactly expensive when put into comparison with other titles. For example amazon both the PS4 / PSV sit around 5000 yen.

Would have expected a little higher than what we are seeing here just based off of nostalgia alone with all the characters who make appearances in the game. But guess something with the game didnt click with more people maybe.

The demo was pretty abysmal too personally. So I dont blame if folks if thats what scared them off from doing a purchase in the first week.

PS4 being at close to 4 million, only about 2 and a half years after launch in Japan, compared to PS3 after 10 years puts things in perspective.

I think PS4 is doing pretty decent over there.

On the other hand, the niche software over there is mostly just being ported from vita instead of being built for PS4 users who would consume certain kinds of material, so until that happens...

What has the PSP (or Vita) got to do with me pointing out that the PS4 is on course to beat the best YTD number of the PS3?

I'll let you figure that out :p

It was gonna bomb wherever it released. It might've just eeked a few additional sales out if they'd have released a Vita version.

Don't understand what happened with that game at all really. Seemed to have a troubled development judging the time between announcement and release and the cancellation of Vita version. Who actually developed it?

Hmm... last time there was a simultaneous release (Nintendo 3DS XL in Japan and Europe), it was on a Saturday, but release date was officially moved to Friday (at least in my country).

Going straight for a Friday release instead of Saturday for Europe makes sense (especially since it's the usual release day for most publishers).

I'm surprised both WoFF and SAO are ranked higher on PS4 than Vita. The difference (at least for SAO) is small enough to where Famitsu or Dengeki might swap them around, though. Usually the Vita versions have better legs, but SAO: HR on Vita sure is a production ...

Famitsu has SAO higher on PSV, but agrees with PS4 > PSV for WoFF

200 whole copies

Dengeki doesn't agree with either. Vita versions of SAO and WoFF above their PS4 counterparts: http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/403/1403696/

On the other hand, the niche software over there is mostly just being ported from vita instead of being built for PS4 users who would consume certain kinds of material, so until that happens...

This post is about 2 years out of date. Most of the really niche software isn't multi-plat unless it's something trivial to port like a VN. The majority of the slightly less niche stuff seems to be leading on PS4. SAO: HR certainly did. I'm going to take a guess that based on the storage juggling TOSE had to do with WoFF, that it wasn't Vita first either. Nothing 3D from Koei Tecmo/Gust leads on Vita. Valkyria Azure isn't. With the exception of DQH2 and DQB, Vita never really got mainstream multiplats.

Maybe SD Gundam G Gen Genesis and SRW V are, but I'm not sure those games would look dramatically different if it was the inverse.

Who actually developed it?

I'd like to know that myself. Digging up gameplay footage doesn't do a lot of good because most are using the PS4's internal recording function, which blocks the logo roll.

Congrat' to the winners.
Not too bad for me, I thought I was more off than that. Skipped the last prediction because nothing really exciting to predict ^^

Hm, hard to say if 100,000 for World of Final Fantasy is bad. If it has decent legs it could end up doing decent I guess.

Regardless, game is a ton of fun. I hope it does well.

MHS finally back in stock on Amazon.

I'm curious about the impact the massive animal crossing update is going to cause in the charts, I'm expecting a big 3DS bump and the game maybe getting back to top 10?

Looking at Amazon, a lot of people seems to be buying the price slashed products, like the Happy Home Designer NFC Reader bundle (#37), Amiibo Festival (#49), Isabelle #71, Card Set #83, Tom Nook #88, Squid Sisters #99.

The repack of New Leaf is charting at #62 and the NFC Reader accessory at #75.

And here the movers and shakers charts, dominated by everything Animal Crossing: https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/movers-and-shakers/videogames/ref=zg_bs_tab_t_bsms

So yeah, the update is working, it's moving a lot of inventory. Retailers must be really happy.

I'm not feeling inspired at all but let's do this, thanks for the reminder Bruno.
