Media Create Sales: Week 47, 2014 (Nov 17 - Nov 23)

This does not change the bottom line: PSV is unable to have heavy hitters, and even though the installed base would allow them, it will remain a platform mainly for niche or 100-150k games.

This is an AAA handheld project, I'd say the most important PSV game ever developed. PSV has an installed base of 3m+, which could technically support 450-500k games.

Sega revised expectations so a 400k might look more achievable. 400k units would be the least minimum attainable result for the biggest PSV project ever.

I agree with the conclusion you're reaching here (that Vita better supports smaller-range titles or bigger titles which are multi-plat with something else) but your method of getting there is incredibly hyperbolic.

In terms of team size, time in development etc. the game is no bigger than Freedom Wars (3 years, 3 different studios developing). Not really any bigger than God Eater either.

And in terms of scope I wouldn't say it's any bigger either - it's an instanced 4-person-ad-hoc hunting game, like many others on the console.

The only thing it has going for it over everything else, bar God Eater, is pedigree. And absolutely, it should've done better than it did. But still, SEGA have managed to kill a lot of that strong pedigree it had going for it by releasing it a) going completely radio-silent on it for a massively long period after they first revealed it b) by releasing a poorly-received demo and c) releasing it late to the market in a sea of competitors.

I don't believe that it's the be-all, end-all, unbelievably AAA project you're making it out to be, nor do I believe SEGA treated it as such. Perhaps that was the idea when they first conceived it, but it's not the product we've been shown for the past year which released last week.

Let's be honest. These days, tri-Ace is one of the last places you would go to if you were seriously trying to make a super AAA title on any platform. Lol. :p

Of course lol. For AAA title Sega would rather look for savior of gaming Level-5 or Imagrepoch wkwkwkwkwk

Playstation 20th anniversary survey with ten thousand people.

Game you liked the most:

1. Dragon Quest V (PS2)

So, this pretty much confirms DQXI exclusive to the PS4.

Remake you look forward to the most:

1. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Do I even need to say it?

lol the thirst for FF7 R is real.

Its sad what has happened to Tri-Ace but does anyone know what happened to Tri-crescendo?

PREDICTION LEAGUE DECEMBER 2014

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from Dec 1 to 28):

[3DS] Hardware (28 days) - 823K
[WIU] Hardware (28 days) - 215K
[PS4] Hardware (28 days) - 135K
[WIU] Super Smash Bros. Wii U (23 days) - 610K
[PS4+XBO] Grand Theft Auto V (18 days) - 120K
[3DS] Youkai Watch 2 Shinuchi (16 days) - 2255K
[3DS] Final Fantasy Explorers (11 days) - 245K
[PS3+PSV] Gundam Breaker 2 (11 days) - 115K

In the meanwhile, on Comgnet:

[3DS] 12-year-old. ~ Real feelings ~ - 26pt
[PS4] Grand Theft Auto 5 - 21pt

GTAV will sell more, of course, but probably many people are still satisfied by the PS3 version (that might keep selling during holidays as well).

I don't believe that it's the be-all, end-all, unbelievably AAA project you're making it out to be, nor do I believe SEGA treated it as such. Perhaps that was the idea when they first conceived it, but it's not the product we've been shown for the past year which released last week.

500k units (as Sega was expecting to begin with) should not be something so special on a 3m+ units platform with a quite active userbase, to be honest. No one is saying it should have done a million units, nor 800k, 700k, 600k. When the game was announced, many were sharing this view; then after the first demo many were skeptical, but I don't think there were any downgrades down the line.

When 3DS was at 3.2m, it already had a 700k game, a 600k game and a 500k game.

Pokemon ORAS - 1,553pt (final, 3 titles combined)

YW2.5 - 1,713pt (10 days left)

have been already mentioned how much will be the first shipment ?

how many pts had games with a 2mln opening week ?
I just remember MHP3 but that was insane, iirc more than 5,000pt on final day :D

Interesting how commited some are into downplaying PSNova when it comes to its quality and sales expectations. PSV as a whole is doing quite bad for a while now and that´s likely one of the most important reasons for its performance. I feel kind of bad for Sega, they put forth an honest effort and put a quite established handheld IP on the system and even started to built a PhantasyStar userbase on PSV with PS02, but just a few months before its release, at TGS and the preTGS event, the message for the system basically was that the system will become obsolete and won´t be seriously supported going forward especially when it comes to 1st party software, even Gravity Daze 2 (which is rumored to be a console game instead) was nowhere to be seen.

The recent conferences in Japan kind of remind me of how PSV was handled at their E3 conferences. This was highlighted by the lack of any kind of answer be it hardware or software to the New3DS announcement, they pretty much looked quite apathetic and lazy in comparison. This could be one of many reasons why PSV is performing this much worse compared to it´s first half-year hardware-sales and I see no reason why this wouldn´t have affected PSNova sales.

It's a dead system. It's already obsolete in Western markets. It's worldwide lifetime sales will end up somewhere around 10M.
Even in Japan it's basically on a ventilator.

It's doing much more poorly than earlier in its life-cycle because it's a product with limited market potential that's already being rapidly saturated.

Why would there be any answer to the n3DS? There isn't going to be any future foray into handhelds.

There's no point throwing good money after bad.
There isn't any grand mystery to solve.

So should PS Nova have been a 3DS game instead? Would it have done better?

We don't even know how it has done on the Vita yet, so it's a bit premature. I guess we can look at how FF Explorers does on 3DS in Dec to get a feel of whether the market for such titles is really stronger on 3DS at this point. It's certainly possible.

I get the feeling if PSV and FFE are really representative of genre potential on their platforms then developers should probably give up now and fully embrace mobile.

Welp.

2012-like Vita Holidays here we come!

I'm shocked it bombed . (Nova)
Last year many people thought it was the only Vita game of potentially hitting 500k.

I thought first week was going to hit around 185,000 despite the lack of noise recently .
But FW only 125k you say- I'm shocked !

I wonder if next year will yield the lowest numbers for Vita (soft and hardware ) yet.

Are there any tactical games planned for release next year , besides Disgae. I hooping for gameplay like Shinning Force, Venus and Braves or a fantasy version of V.Chronicles.
I want more of these types of games to be released before it really does die.

Bandai Namco is releasing Aikatsu! 365 Idol Days on 3DS in a few days, on December 4th. This game is based on a popular arcade collectible card game; it's basically an idol simulator targeted towards a young female audience.

It's the third game in this franchise to be released on 3DS. The first, Aikatsu! Cinderella Lesson came out in 2012, and from 9,019 units in its debuts week, it crawled towards an LTD of 142,603 units. The second one, Aikatsu! Futari no my Princess was released last year and was way more successful: 53,866 units in its first week, for a total of 244,378 units.

Curious to see how this third one is going to perform. I guess less than the previous one, but still weel during the holiday season. Maybe around 200k when it's all said and done?

Ouch @ PSV and Wii U sales. I hope the PSV can move more units in the coming weeks, but I'm not too optimistic. Any big releases?

you didn't read the thread ???

Vita is dead and haz no gamez

anyway, last week a Value Pack was released in 2 versions, also Nova released so probably sales will increase and they might match last year results, even if 75k on week 52 seems difficult (FFX remake iirc)

The goal is to make the prediction "in the dark", without any sales information.

By friday of the first week of the month we might get shipment/sell-through information for one of the games in the list; If the game is big enough, we'll get first-day shipment information sometimes, which might happen in the first day of the month. Then it becomes far too easy.

No "waiting for PR" here like we do with NPD predictions. =P

2012-like Vita Holidays here we come!
There has been a palpable drop in the latter half of this year (globally, not just in Japan). It's as though Sony gave up (although, they'd given up a while earlier but not been as candid about it) and then every single fence sitter jumped off and firmly into the 'fuck that then' camp. I mean, it only sped up the inevitable, but it sped it up at a remarkable pace. Whilst they were trickling out mid-sized titles there was always 'the next thing' to look toward, but since Freedom Wars it's been abundantly clear that they aren't going to make any more Vita games.

Won't surprise me if they silently phase out the Vita entirely next year. They're already grooming the Xperia range to replace it for Remote Play.

Vita has already been unofficially discontinued on NA. I believe they will ride through 2015 with indies, multiplats, few specific games for EU and niches in Japan and Asia while it still sells a couple million units in the year. By 2016 and 2017, it will be like PSP in 2013 and 2014. That is my guess.

Why would they when they have PS4 selling like the Wii?

Focusing on developing for the PS4, would not only help the system even more but the titles released would also have the potential to do better (1st party).
