its gonna be interesting what capcom does regarding mh5, if we go by history, it should come out in exactly 2 years, which is when 3ds successor will be nearly out, will they move on to it or will they stick to the 3ds? another possibility is if they release another expansion next year so they can buy more time to work on mh5 and see where they go moving forward.

they can always go multiplatform between 3ds and its successor also, like twilight princess.

if 3ds' successor comes out earlier than expected, like late next year/early 2016, they can also go multiplatform between 3ds and its successor, which means they can capitalize on the 3ds userbase but also start building the fanbase on 3ds' successor, i don't think this is gonna happen though.

and im not trying to make it look like capcom has any obligations to help nintendo with their hardware, but going by what happened with mh3g and mh4, it's clear capcom and nintendo has a very good relationship, at least with mh, that they plan out the franchise's future long before the chosen platform is even released.
As you said, Nintendo and Capcom seem to have found a good relationship for this IP.
Couldn't they make a 4DS (or whatever) version of MonHun5, and at the same time another update of 4 on New3DS? If the next console is also indeed made to easily port the same games, maybe they'll try another HD port to see what they should do later as well.
They'll probably keep trying to expand the game on mobile at the same time, but not with main entries yet. If an eventual 4DS-only MonHun 5 fails though...

yeah they're gonna capitalize on the 3ds one way or another i think, considering it's gonna be the only relevant handheld for the foreseeable future, unlike the psp which was near its deathbed and the 3ds was an attractive platform coming from the ds.

the only question is do they feel confident enough in the 3ds' successor to jump ship straight away for mh5 or include the 3ds in some form.

i think capcom was smart enough to realise the psp was only built on third party games and sony didn't put in much effort when it comes to games support, while nintendo handhelds get the premiere treatment from nintendo, they had no worries that the 3ds wouldn't be able to support mh.

it'd be better for capcom to support smartphones through its own mh versions like they are right now, rather than move the mainline to it, there's no need to do such a drastic move yet, maybe when its time for mh6 and the market is different, thats when smartphones would come into consideration if dedicated handhelds are no longer popular enough in japan.

as long as dedicated handhelds can sell 3-4m games, there's no need for capcom to think about smartphones for mainline games, unless they implement smartphone business models into the game, the margins just aren't worth it compared to selling it on dedicated handhelds.

It's more likely that we see a 4th generation release on the successor platform before 5th generation, even if that means a year out wait.
I mean it was 3 years between Monster Hunter Portable 3rd and Monster Hunter 4 (4 years after Tri), and 5th generation Monster Hunter's definitely in the same boat.

So expanded/basic 4th generation port on the successor system's 1st year (2016), then 5th generation the next year (2017).

of course, Nova is for Vita = bomba, Bravely is for 3DS, success :D

just for curiosity, how much you expect for Nova? 400-500k?
so of course you can say it's a bomb, isn't it ? ;)
400-500k would be great numbers, especially if they can move about 25k-30k units on top of that. Phantasy Star is one of the few franchises outside of God Eater that have done well on Sony portables so if PSV hit those numbers it'd be roughly in-line with what their previous entries sold.

400-500k ?
that's means more than any other games, considering GE2 barely arrived at 400k

PSO2 did well on PSP cause there was MH, cause PSP had a widely userbase than Vita

actually I would say 200k is a target, 300k would be a very good result, but absolutely 400k is out of sight

mh3u had 2 years to build the fanbase, another expansion on the successor in 2016 will only give it one year to build the fanbase, i'm not sure capcom would want this.

which is why i think its more likely an expansion will be multiplatform or 3ds only (depending on when it comes out), rather than only exclusive, since that way capcom can still capitalize on the 3ds fanbase while also moving to the successor, since there will be less time to build the fanbase, at least they won't lose too much sales by going exclusive.

as long as enough people move to the successor, similar to mh3u, they'll have something to build on when mh5 comes out where the rest will jump ship.

at the end of the day it all comes down to when the 3ds' successor comes out and maybe capcom doesn't care about building the fanbase early on the successor, since it'll still be on nintendo hardware unlike the jump from psp > ds, but i also think the loss of sales is also a concern for them.

the jump from psp>ds wasn't something capcom wanted to do, they just had to, i think they'll want 3m+ selling mh games with every version, rather than starting from scratch and losing sales each time when a successor comes out.

Multiplat between 3DS and 4DS could work well for Capcom, if they make the game cross compatible .

It would make the most sense businesswise ( test the waters on the 4DS and maybe give it a push, not abandon the huge 3DS installbase etc.) .

I don´t think moving the series to mobile is on the cards either. Full retail handheld project+ mobile port down the line (like they already do for the Ace Attorney series) seems much more effective.

If it's for 3DS's successor, I think transition will be a lot easier for users, as opposed to going from PSP to 3DS, thus they may not necessarily need as much time as they did for Monster Hunter 4.

yeah i think cross-compatibility would be a good move, everyone can enjoy the game without being left out or forced to move on, it also buys time so that once mh5 is ready, the 3ds' successor should be in a good position to support it, since nintendo should have a few of their key franchises out for it.

it'll be pretty much like the psp > 3ds transition, only it'll be multiplatform since psp was no longer the top selling handheld and will no longer the home of mh, while the 3ds will be, mh staying on nintendo hardware makes it much easier for capcom to figure out what to do.

If it's for 3DS's successor, I think transition will be a lot easier for users, as opposed to going from PSP to 3DS, thus they may not necessarily need as much time as they did for Monster Hunter 4.
true to an extent, but we must not forget that new hardware is still new hardware, they'll still need to sufficiently build the fanbase on the 3ds successor before thinking about mh5.

I don't know how much Sega expects, but 200k seems a bit low for an handheld AAA game; I explained the reasons why I think so a few posts ago.
200k is close to what PSU sold on PS2 and PS0 on DS. There's no way Sega's targets are that low, I'd say 300k minimum and more likely 400k which seems be the genre ceiling on the system.

Hmmmm..... It seems that many seems to think that FF EX is going to bomb hard here.

Considering they just release their demo here, can anyone who had knowledge on Japanese gamer on what their reaction here? Is it bad? As my own personal experience, the game is not bad at all here. It actually is like Phantasy Star more than Monster Hunter.

Yeah you're right my mistake, I was thinking of totals not first week. I'm" predicting 250k minimum for first week but that's a really generous estimate as don't think it'll top out God Eater 2's numbers.

EDIT: PSO2 was on Vita.

400K-500K would be exceptionally good number for a Vita game considering only one game ever sold more than 300K (sans DL).

Ok, sorry if I didn't do it yesterday.

Skylock's performance analysis.

Now, I need to say something first before going on: it's not as accurate as the one for Chaos Rings III, since I couldn't track the Google Play page daily as I wanted, to check the amount of downloads...I checked it for many days since November 1st (the first time I talked about Skylock), but not always as I wanted. Then, I don't exactly know when the game passed from "between 10,000 and 50,000" to "between 50,000 and 100,000" or, as it recently happened, from "between 50,000 and 100,000" to "between 100,000 and 500,000"...I can guess, though, given what said earlier, hopefully being near enough to the actual result.

So, after this introduction, let's go.

Free Download Chart

The game started quite slowly, with a subsequent slow, but steady increase, towards top 40, then down, even out of top 100 and...suddenly...boom, almost on top. If you think it could be a result of more advertising on GP, it doesn't seem so: it hadn't been featured on GP Home Page / GP days ago, and seemingly this didn't change. So...ads outside of GP / word of mouth / whatever? Opinions on the matter would be highly appreciated.

Now, about download numbers...

October 31st, 2014 - between 10,000 and 50,000
...
November 3rd, 2014 (guess) - between 50,000 and 100,000
...
November 11th, 2014 (guess) - between 100,000 and 500,000

This is hopefully right enough. Again, I couldn't check the page daily, but I did check it almost daily, so I'm not completely in the dark about this. Still, these are just my guesses. It'll be interesting to see when it'll go beyond 500,000 downloads, since now it's so high.

Grossing Chart

It seems grossing on Google Play didn't change that much in the past few days, while downloads exploded. Overall, except for the first three days, around between 70th and 80th. Actually, recently it seems it's started to slow down, and on November 14th it went out of top 100.

And now, let's take a look at how the game is doing on iOS

iPhone Free Download Chart

...It didn't happen just on Google Play, then! on iPhone, the game had a huge debut, directly in top 5, and then 1st. Then, all of a sudden, from November 3rd, consistent and important drops. On November 12th, it was 180th. Now, again in top 5. It must be because of a renewed promotional campaign, right? Or is there another reason?

iPhone Grossing Chart

Staying mostly between 30th and 50th, peaking at 33rd on November 3rd, but with a recent steady decline. On November 14th, the negative record since launch, at 81st, but it seems today it recovered a bit.

iPad Free Download Chart

...What just happened between November 7th and November 13th? Why did it completely disappear from charts? Could the reason behind this be also why the game saw a consistent decrease in downloads for a while?

iPad Grossing Chart

...And why the game is not featured in iPad Grossing Charts right now?

*ends the analysis really confused*

I was looking at Famitsu for which P4G LTD is 289K.
I'm not sure about MC.
Media Create had the game at 294k when Persona Q was released. After this, Persona 4 Golden appeared in top 50 during several weeks in summer. Even we don't have a exact figure, it's pretty much confirmed the game sold over 300k on retail.

Media Create via Nintendo Everything

In a nutshell:
 • New 3DS and New 3DS XL have sold 500k units by far;
 • MC is expecting the revisions to sell an additional 700k units this year;
 • SSB version of 3DS XL sold 13k units, but the game sold less than the previous week (it wasn't included in the special edition.

700k units seem a bit low for the rest of November and the whole December.
These predictions from Media Create are taken too seriously. They are rarely based on market analysis but more on historical data. Just like the previous 150k number for New 3DS launch, the 1,2m figure is given because DSi sold 1,2m the year it launched too.

Analyst Corumn*:

Maeda Eiji (SMBC Nikko Securities Inc.)
- Youkai Watch 2 Shin Uchi is the game we have to look forward this holiday season.
The movie is scheduled for the 20th of December, and the advanced tickets have already surpassed 720k pre-orders. This is the higher number for a Touhou Film movie. It will be interesting to see how far can reach the game in the mature market of 3DS.
Pre-orders for Pokemon ORAS are almost in the same level than the XY ones in Japan, and they're even higher in the west. A very big worldwide title for this holiday season.
Finally, it will be interesting the performance of Super Smash Bros for Wii U, and how can the game expand the userbase.

Yamamura Junko (Nomura Securities Co.)
- The three important titles of this holiday season are the followings.
First, if we look the state of pre-orders for Pokemon ORAS, I'm gonna guess it will sell more than the last entry.
Youkai Watch 2: Shin Uchi is not just a game. It's a global item that includes toys, medals, a movie and other kind of merchandising that are going to take a big part of the holidays.
About Super Smash Bros for Wii U, it will be sold together with the Amiibos. I'm seeing interest in these items and this game will be a test of how are they going to sell in Japan.

Retailers Corumn*

Akitani Hisako (GamesMaya)
- Nintendo has several titles competing this holiday season. Special mention on Youkai Watch. Pre-orders of the game are growing in a higher pace than the last entry.
Sony has prepared some bundles (Dragon Quest Heroes for PS4 and Value Packs for Vita) for this holiday season. I have the feeling that this promotions have the intention of start in a good shape next year.
Microsoft needs to do something urgent to create appeal of its console.

Hayashi Shouta (Bic Camera Ikebukuro)
- Pre-orders for Pokemon ORAS and Youkai Watch 2 are strong. I can feel the huge popularity of these games.
We have a good amount of pre-orders for the Dragon Quest Heroes Bundle for PS4. It is expected to expand the PS4's market.
Popular series are releasing this holiday, as Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires, Super Smash Bros for Wii U or Grand Theft Auto V HD.
It is also expected a great demand for the New 3DS model this holidays, and games with an important multiplayer element as Final Fantasy Explorers are expected to sell well too.

There is rumors saying that (according to CoroCoro magazine), there'd be a Minecraft Vita Bundle in Japan releasing 12/4.

Assuming true, isn't that what you guys have been waiting for since months ago?! :D

I know jackshit about CoroCoro aside from "OMG POKEMON SCANzZZzzzzzz!!!" so lol...

I'm leaning towards that being true because it's such an uninteresting thing to make up. But I feel like it's short notice for a bundle. Also, poor PSNova. All it gets are Sony Store exclusives.

That's actually coming out this month. And honestly surprised it to see it ranked 7th.
Etrian Odyssey Untold sold around 130k, with a debut around 92k units. I bet this entry will be able to sell about the same, but Persona Q might have attract new gamers to the series. Etrian Odyssey, though, has a quite stable following: all entries sold around 130-145k units.

Both analysts give the same top 3: Pokemon, Youkai Watch and Smash for Wii U.

Smash will be the interesting title to watch this December.

edit: All YSO predictions have OR/AS at 1,5M minimum for first 3 days.

Vita should get a boost in two weeks thanks to Phantasy Star Nova.
I doubt that considering most folks who were Phantasy Star fans would have bought it to mess with PSO2 in the first place. If anything the only "boost" would be coming from those who collect LE vitas with the Sony Store exclusive.

That and people who played the demo the good one mind you, already have a Vita.

Sony store exclusives generally sell well considering they become sold out quickly.

At least there is a LE version. Not to mention this one looks decent unlike some of the other abominations such as the ffx vita.

Honest, non-troll question: does Japan even matter anymore? Obviously for mega hits like Pokemon and MonHun it does, and the 3DS, but holy cow everytime I look at the numbers it's absolutely abysmal.
Ummm.... It still sold more consoles than UK, France, Germany and Italy there. Software sales for big titles is also strong.

I mean, in the chart Smash and Youkai is also dominating there.

Console is dead though.

Would that be in regards to the previous remake?

Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, Pokemon BlackWhite2?

Or X&Y, the latter being surprising?
She said 前作 that means previous work. Then, she is talking about XY.

I doubt that considering most folks who were Phantasy Star fans would have bought it to mess with PSO2 in the first place. If anything the only "boost" would be coming from those who collect LE vitas with the Sony Store exclusive.

That and people who played the demo the good one mind you, already have a Vita.
Even Phantasy Star Nova fails to attract new users, the boost is inevitable since a Value Pack is released the same week.
Just remember how well this packs worked in the past.

One Piece and Capt. Toad should hope for a nice holiday bump. Last year, One Piece: Unlimited World Red debuted with around 80k and went to sell 260k units.

Of course, One Piece will see a huge decrease with respect to Gigant Battle entries on DS, that sold more than 300k units.

To MS : they don't care, Japan doesn't care about them.

To Nintendo : Very important. 30% iirc of 3DS sales are from Japan and its almost the same for WiiU. Certain software also sell really well there.

To Sony: Software wise, it is important for Sony specifically PS4. They want to get the Japanese third parties on board. Hardware sales wise it isn't crucial to Sony (actually for PSV it is) but its still an important country. PS4 is on track to become the fastest selling console of all time despite it having one of the worst opening years in Japan. Also you might want your console to do relatively well in Japan to ensure more support from third parties.

Does Japanese third party titles even matter that much for sales outside Japan? As you said, PS4 is on track to become the fastest selling console of all time in EU/NA without Japanese support at all (thought for some it obviously matters that they've already secured FF etc., but that was known even before launch.)

Is it going to effect hardware sales notably (getting these smaller Japanese titles)? Individually no, but it may be a case of trying to build a better library in the long run.

These titles would definitely help the console's situation in Japan which as I said is still one of the biggest countries for console sales. Yes it has declined spectacularly but its still a notable chunk that should not be ignored....the only problem being Japan's tastes are so different to the West's resulting in a much larger investment. There may very well be a point in the future where Sony decides the investment is too much relative to the benefits but its not now.
