I would rather Johnny be the blue eyed blonde hearththrob from the pages of the comics. But this is an adaptation and his ethnicity ir blood relation to Sue doesn't really change the character. In fact the adopted angle can soemtimes make the sibling relationship stronger from a stroytelling point of view. A real change would be making him an edgy emo teen.

One point of concern if it is Johnny that is the adopted sibling is the writers might feel they need to explore that angle. Adding emotional baggage the character doesn't need. If he ignores his past it might come off as more heartless than intended. With Sue you could ignore it because of the love story with Reed.

Well I'm pretty sure this movie had no chance of being good no matter who they cast. I mean c'mon.. this is Fox we're talking about here.

Interesting cast.

I fear for Hollywood's hate of "mixed" families, but I have no problems with Johnny being black.
I even know a "white" girl with a "black" brother because they have a black dad and a white mom, so no problem with then being genetic brothers either.

...but that might be a little too "advanced" for a big hollywood studio =P

Oh, that's not bad.

But Brad Bird needs to direct a super hero movie

ANOTHER super hero movie you mean

Fox is gambling big here. They've got nothing to lose. They are rebooting a property they fucked up to begin with. Damaged it further with a sequel. Now they are throwing in a casting decision(s) that are desperate to say the least. Instead of getting press that will be positive by say announcing a plot direction to get people excited; they are instead trying to generate hype by stunt casting.

If it takes great, Fox Wins! If it doesn't Fox loses a property they no longer want after 3 failed attempts.

Fox wins again because then the property reverts back to Marvel. Damaged in the public eye. Another reboot even done properly by the people that care might not generate excitement.

Marvel proved with The Hulk that the public is willing to embrace a character once it's finally done right.

So hopefully after this bombs they'll get a crack at it.

If every black guy that read for the role was utterly fucking crap and tom hardy was good, I'd have no problem with this.

So you are suggesting that in that scenario, Tom Hardy would first have to wait for a gauntlet of every black actor that would reasonably fit the role to try out and fail before he could be accepted after proving he was the absolute best for the job. Are you suggesting that the likely scenario was that Michael B Jordan first waited for the same gauntlet of white actors to try and fail at winning the role of Johnny Storm and then came out on top?

You are expecting a lot from fox. There will probably be a few "He is adopted" jokes and that's it.

again, considering Jordan was the first actor pursued, the first actor signed, and so far, the entire focus of ANY news regarding this movie, it's more than possible that this is a take on the Four that focuses more on him than Reed.

People seem to be dismissing this out of hand, but they also seem to be the same people consistently misusing big words in attempt to make their closed-mindedness sound "smart" somehow.

I do remember plenty of bitching when Alba was cast as Sue. The thing is (HAHA), comic-book movies were a lot smaller back then. I'm sure there things would be noiser these days.

That said, brunette Alba is superior Alba.

The blue contacts she had were horrible.

I assumed that's because Jordan and Trank are pals, not necessarily because the movie revolves around Johnny and he wanted to nail that down first.

I can't picture Kate with Sue's blonde hair. Biggest problem for me. Bigger than some dude playing Mr Fantastic that hasn't had a certain part of his body stretch before. Or Ben Grimm being played by a brah not from Yancy Street.

Yeah, but even if we're following that train of thought: if Jordan and Trank are pals - why wouldn't Trank shift the focus to make the movie more about his friend?

This is like the fruition of the black captain america thread from a long time ago. Again we have people with no connections and cursory knowledge of looooong established iconic characters telling passionate comic fans how they should feel. There's things we are all pssionnate about that we don't want to see fucked with from music, art, games etc.

Comic book fans at least have the luxury of writing this up as a multiverse tale of an alternate Fantastic Four. To me that's fine, let's see how it turns out, but it wont be the core FF I grew up with and know. Same way I would dig a spiderman movie with Miles as the main character.

Adoption would be a cheap cop-out. Maybe interracial parents?

It's insane and even infuriating to read people trying to come up with possibilities, wonder how, while trying their best to ignore the one answer that is likely the most simple and straight forward.

How is it infuriating that people are speculating on a part of a movie that is obviously going to come up at least once in the film? There are different possibilities, not just the one that you want to see.

Are you referring to The Incredible Hulk or The Avengers? Because both Hulk films made about the same amount of money and had about the same amount of critical reception as well.

They should have gotten Chris Evans for Human Torch again, but wearing his Captain America suit all the time, then when people points out the he is wearing Cap's suit he'll be like: "I Don't know what are you talking about".
I'll pay top dollars for that movie.

That's a $1 billion in box office for sure. The good ideas are the ones no one pay attention to :(

A movie that focused primarily on Johnny Storm would get...tiresome.
Unless they do the comic story line where
He beats the shit of Annihilus and keeps him as a pet
it'll probably be tiresome. Mr. Fantastic has to be the driving force behind a Fantastic Four movie in most scenarios.

But considering they're basing this off the Ultimate line I doubt it'll happen.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

In like what... another 7 years time? Woudln't be surprised if Marvel was rebooting stuff themselves around then after RDJ and others are clearly all out after Avengers 3.

Ultimate FF was such total crap. What makes this all the more ridiculous of course is that The Incredibles happened and showed what an FF film could be, but Fox still didn't get the memo.

If the costumes are looking cheap right now on X-Men, their one big ticket license, imagine how cheap they'll stoop to on this FF movie's rushed production!

Oh and reasons why a black Johnny Storm is a crappy choice to force in:

- Johnny being "the odd one out of the family" now will give angst and more downers to a character defined by a total laissez faire attitude. Worse still that we'll be subjected to far more Sue and Johnny's Father/Mother drama when the focus should always just be on the 4 and then Reed and Sue's kids.
- Johnny and Sue dont have a particularly close relationship for a long while, but no doubt this will be the reverse as they clumsily and very clearly drag out that THEY ARE BROTHER AND SISTER, and all the eye rolling lines I'm sure they'll slip in to ensure that THIS IS VERY CLEAR.
- Can the prankster relationship between Ben and Johnny even be fostered without fears of racial bullying scrapping that angle entirely?
- MBJ himself is just too dorky to pull off the smooth rockstar angle that Johnny has always had. If they wanted to make Chronicle 2, do that. Don't just unashamedly try and do so through another fucking license however. Thats just huge disrespect to a franchise running for over 50 years.

Wait, they're basing this off the Ultimate line? Ugh. I like evil Reed but with no family aspect, it's not Fantastic Four. That's terrible news.

The bitching about Jordan being Johnny is gonna be crazy. When Donald Glover was rumored to be cast as Spiderman people were mad. Even on GAF the racism was coming out over the rumor of Donald Glover. I would imagine that the Johnny Storm casting is gonna be a wave of bullshit up until the release of the movie.

Teller and Jordan are both fantastic actors. Jordan as Torch? Yeah, ok.. I can dig that. But Teller as Reeds? Sorry, i don't want Dawsons Creek version of Fantastic Four.

My interest went from mild to none.

I wouldn't like Glover as Peter Parker, but I would love him as Miles Morales.

The simpliest answer would be that they're half-siblings. Same father, different mothers.

Not going to happen, but it would be a nice change for a Hollywood movie.

Will most likely be Sue seeing a young Johnny on the streets, asking her mom isn't there anyway we can do anything. And Sue's family will adopt him and he'll be grateful and loyal and protect Sue growing up etc. This is Hollywood. Could've made a real statement with having both siblings be black, provide a young sexy black actress a chance to be a leading lady, play up an interracial angle with Reed Richards. They could have cast Reed as a black male lead, kept the Storm siblings white.

Instead, they get their token diversity casting and will whitewash who he is, so that his only differentiator is that he is black. They want you to see that he's black, but they don't want you to appreciate he's black. Essentially, because of the past two films, people will view Johnny as the comedy relief as well. A guy earlier in the thread had a better point, could have made a better statement making Ben Grimm(Thing) black. Already viewed as different, how will he deal with yet again being different to where even black people wouldn't understand him etc.
