Metro Last Light dev: 'Wii U has horrible, slow CPU' [Up: DICE dev comments]

It is kind of sad to read these kinds of things. I really like the WiiU but if this is the beginning of developers whining about the system specs then they are better off keeping it to themselves. It just makes them sound lazy and immature. Nothing is perfect and if they are going to whine then just make your game for Sony and Microsoft and leave Nintendo to their own devices. If I was Nintendo this would be one of my main reason for not caring about third parties much less wanting to help them sell their games. Work with what your are given if it doesn't work then move on but don't make yourself look bad in the process by saying such ignorant things.

This blame the developer mentality has to be one of the worst things I've seen on Gaf. So now people should keep their mouths shut? For who? If Nintendo has a shitty CPU then developers have every right to talk about it. There was no whining here. He was saying what he felt about the system. I mean what is he supposed to do? Lie? And how in the world can you call him ignorant

It kinda sucks that the Wii U has a slow CPU. It seems like Nintendo had to make a lot of concessions to hit that low power draw target, and the CPU really suffered for it. As long as I get some amazing games on the console though I won't be overly upset.

I heard that there was so much extra salt being shoveled around by Nintendo fans post Wii-U launch that the Pacific was in serious risk of turning to fresh water :P

Reading the actual quote makes it sound like the real issue was not enough manpower to develop to develop or even consider how to adapt it for Wii U, especially with adding the PS3 SKU. It doesnt even sound like they bothered to get their hands wet to me.

"Had to"? They didn't have to do anything they didn't want to.

Look I understand your point but they still made an affordable HD console which is what most Wii owner wanted from the get go.

Is it? If I had to guess I would say Wii owners were content with the graphics offered by the Wii if we're talking about the expanded audience. And if their only goal was to make an affordabe HD console than they failed miserably because the other two are being offered with games for much cheaper this holiday.

Well, if low power draw was their main priority then yeah they probably did have to underclock the CPU a bunch to keep power consumption down. It's not what I would have prioritized but that's Nintendo for you. Though to be honest I think the slow ass RAM will prove to be a bigger hurdle moving forward.

yet the wii u is a terrible value proposition from a performance standpoint. $350 of pure spec with a mind to break even could've really been something.

The battery thing is even worse when you look at this

Nintendo approved $60 battery pack incoming!

Damn right!

The amount of "lazy dev" crap that idiots toss around is appalling.
Only in very rare cases does it hold any amount of merit.

'Tis a shame about Darksiders 2. Meh, the game wasn't great to begin with any way. No big loss there. Bring it on Gearbox, shine thy light upon the incompetence of these small time devs. We beseech thee, gives us the textures that a current gen console gamer is ignorant of. Show that this CPU isn't slow rather challenging and that besides Nintendo (obviously), you have met this challenge head on to unearth the potential of system and reveal the true power of this next generation console, whose GPU was once rumoured to be nearly if not as capable as the Next Xbox's rumoured GPU. Expose this heresy and agenda of the incapable devs.

However, should gearbox fail to deliver graphically, remember: Gameplay>Graphics.

If it didn't know better, I'd think you were being sarcastic!

You'll never know bahahahaha!

Once you factor in everything else though the total costs would have shot above 400 with shipping, storage, etc. The Wii U is not 300 dollars worth of tech to begin with

Yeah!

If you're going to play the blame game do it with publishers or the hardware. They're the ones less likely to give a title the funding it needs. Devs do what they can with what they have. Both in a hardware and funding sense.

So once again a Nintendo console is only worth for Nintendo games and exclusives from third parties.

I'm hopeful that Nintendo will build up a huge network of relations with developers to have a huge publishing arm. Stuff like partnering with Platinum and a lot of studios like Platinum. Cofunding game development for studios. Honestly with the way things are looking for it, Nintendo would be good to buy some of those THQ IPs/studios. If Nintendo is going to do their own thing, than they should at least be Disney like about it and acquire a vast amount of content to go by themselves with.

Whether they could or couldn't do a decent version of the game on Wii U is irrelevant. The Wii U is competing against nearly 7 years old technology. It shouldn't be an issue to begin with.

Because Day 3 of the console's life on the market is the PERFECT time to come to such conclusions.

Sorry, I can't take anymore of this hyper-reactive bullshit anymore, it's driving me back to smoking and drinking just to wash all of it from my brain. Mods, can I get a 2-week ban, please?

Hopefully in two weeks you've got a thicker skin.

This isn't much better than those decrying it weaker than a 360 man. You're still feeling a bit too much personal connection. None of this will have changed in two weeks. We just might have more complete info on what is housed in the system. It's still going to be weak.

Weak meaning different things now than in prior generations.

Nintendo really screwed up by putting in a nerfed CPU, it should have been a brand new architecture not based on Broadway. There was no way for it not to suck clock-specifically with the size of the console. Going brand new they could have had something smaller, faster and more efficient, maybe even cooler.

From about 15 hours now, the CPU didn't do the OS and Gamepad multitasking any favors either...

I doubt it is literally based on Broadway. We won't know until someone has actually X-rayed the thing, but I'd wager it's something modern but single threaded and low clocked. Something that appears like a modern take on that design. Mainly because it's easier to strip a modern design than modernize an old.

3rd parties will be releasing bigger batteries just like they did for 3DS.

Did Nintendo leave the battery space for them? Or did Nintendo plan for a bigger battery and back out?

There's lots of information on it, and everything you've said is wrong.

It has become this never ending circle where Nintendo fans are given a very fun and unique gameplay opportunity with the new system but they are too worried about how the system will look to a group of gamers that will never be satisfied with a Nintendo console to begin with.

Reggie?

I mean, come on... just about everyone on this forum grew up on Nintendo. Very few are bashing just to do so. Many are simply puzzled at there being so many oversights in a console that came out in 2012 that costs $300+.

[not sure if serious]...what makes you think it is a capable machine?

Look at Pikmin Adventure in Nintendo Land. Sure, art style goes a long way and they went a little overboard with everything being so shiny but it's still a great looking game. CPU-wise it's probably not doing much but that's true for lots of games.

Blops 2 is also running and looking great. I've been playing it maxed out at 1080p with 60+ fps on PC since release and it's really not too much of a downgrade on Wii U. Some people seem to be having frame rate issues in SP but others, myself included, haven't encountered them which points to a software issue rather than hardware. MP is running just as smoothly as 360. Considering they had final dev kits for just a few months of their already shorten development/port cycle that's fairly impressive. The shadows are clearly lower resolution in places and I'm sure people will find other differences but while it's running essentially the same game as PS360 you can pause, load up a web browser to watch some videos on youtube, go in to the eshop and buy some games, then download them in the background as you get back to playing. Again, it's not a powerhouse the likes of which we've never seen but it's a capable machine.

It's not even personal connection... the conclusions people are leaping to could cross a fucking chasm. I don't deal well with that shit in ANY scenario, period.

Your "affordable HD console" is the most expensive one on the market right now... and the least powerful, it seems. Is that what you wanted? Congratulations then.

Whatever the case may be they made the CPU decision for ease and comfortability for Nintendo dev's, backwards compatibility and ultimately the size of the console. The size was the dumbest decision by far, it could have been 2.6GHz or even 3GHz but that would melt a Wii U, had it been bigger and louder not a issue at all.

Nintendo has given way for shallow aesthetics and cheapness while sacrificing performance and power that would not only enhance the user experience (overall performance, in-game or not) but provide incentive for porting as well as increasing longevity and value. And for what? To satisfy a "HD Nintendo" craving that everybody loathes after a year (again, performance and snappy experience), add a couple million to Nintendo's pockets and not even be market leader. The more I really play the Wii U the more clear it becomes this was a console made to be as baseline as it gets from a performance perspective, how the mighty have fallen in that regard. Nintendo clearly did not have the technical or software ambition or execution that they've had with other consoles. Just looking at the OS and overall way you navigate and do things with the UI tells me Nintendo is so far behind it's sad. A company from Japan off all places should know better than this...

No, no, no, you're doing it wrong, you should stop focusing on the positive things, let's talk about Batman AC framerate instead.
