Metroid: Zero Mission coming to NA VC tomorrow

We're five years in the 3ds life and people are still getting surprised they're not releasing GBA games. I understand getting annoyed (I get annoyed too) but surprised is kinda weird.

There's 10 GBA games from the Ambassador Program on there, but only for those users, and they're straight ports that they probably used for testing.

VC sales on 3DS weren't really that good, though.
They're not even ports, just ROM dumps running natively on one of the 3DS's CPUs. They even added in the original GBA BIOS in a firmware update for the purpose of native playback.

not on 3ds?
wtf is the point

i can play zero mission on my 3ds with an emulator my iphone 6+ my gba my samsung galaxy s4 pc laptop wii with homebrew..

i'm getting sick of this ... god i hope the NX will fix this ...
i want to give you my money nintendo.

The fact they're specifically avoiding releasing lots of VC games on 3DS while dumping them all on Wii U, the system they're building off of for NX, should be pretty encouraging to you.

I literally only go into Metroid threads to see if you've all gotten over Federation Force yet but I see you guys didn't disappoint once again. Keep up the good work!

Fucking finally! I've never played it but always wanted to. The game came out in a weird time where I stopped buying GBA games and it didn't even register in my radar to boot.

Plus Metroid on NES is basically unplayable now and unfairly difficult and grind heavy (respawn everytime with 30 health only? Fuck that shit) so this is my chance to sorta beat the OG Metroid.

Fingers crossed this might be a tease of great things to come for the franchise.

Original metroid is not that difficult at all. It would be sad if you died more than a handful of times. Starting at 30 health is not a big deal. It takes a few minutes max to charge your health if you know what you're doing. (Hint: don't keep fighting the enemies that just give you 5 health)

I liked it almost as much as I like Super. Not quite as good, but a worthy substitute.

If you wanna cut your speedrunning teeth, ZM might be the better game for it.

I found Metroid II to be basically unplayable when I tried it on the 3DS VC a few years ago. The game has not aged well at all.

I played through M2 last year and I actually think it's a pretty under-appreciated game that's held up more than people give it credit for. Yes, it's limited in comparison to something like Super Metroid in terms of scope, controls, etc but it's still much more fun to play than the first Metroid.

Something the game does well in is the atmosphere and the general sense of terror. The Metroids in this game are actually pretty scary to go against and the music, besides the catchy overworld theme, is a bunch of weird gibberish, giving the caves a surreal and eerie tone.

god i hope they will make it right,, also not making me rebuy all the wii vc and wii u vc stuff would be sweet,

anyway .. playing zero mission on a tv is stupid.. the game gets to ugly ..
the gba resolution was way lower than the snes.

Brah, original Metroid is one the best games on NES and it's a joy to play today. The only problem is starting with no health when you die but it's faster regenerated in spawn camp rooms.

Jesus. And Japan got it like 6 months before that right?

We got Fusion actually. But since they're not even emulated there'd be no problem running this as well. It's probably one of the worst ways to play GBA game due to the blurry screen even on 1:1 . Yoshi Island is unplayable.

Just goes to show how terrible the 3ds design is and the designers lack of foresight.
You lie! Why you lie!? Metroid on NES aged as well as the lost cheese you find a year later behind the dishwasher.

Oh and health is fastly generated at spawn camps? "Fast"? That's a factual lie! Trying to fill up 4 sub tanks everytime you spawn with only 30 health is neither fun or fast.

Those who haven't played the original Metroid heed my call: stay the hell away from the NES Metroid for other than simple curiosity. Zero Mission is a remake of that so there's no reason to beat the very very rough first one anymore.

Same more visual variation (specifically color) would go a long, long way for that game.

This is an old mock-up of what could have been with the DX version, but:

Even this would help improve the "where the hell am i" feeling that pervades the game.

It needs a full on remake, to be perfectly honest.

OG Metroid is not "bad" but it has aged very poorly and is a chore to play now what with the health thing that's neither fast or fun to do everytime you die, the lack of a map, weapons that replace the last one without previous warning making you go back and get the other if you didn't want the new one (if you can even remember where it was located) weird and unfair controls and knock back damage make for a very frustrating play through.

And this is coming from a Super Metroid and Prime lover here. The NES one I'd advice to avoid like the plague.

What was this, a GBA game?

I own the original cart... can I not play it on my 3DS?

If not, I may buy this some day.

only the original DS range has a GBA slot, and I think that was even removed in one of the DS models.

3DS you need to download it.

It's been so long since I played this version. Loved it on the GBA so long ago. As someone who played the NES it felt like a worthy true upgrade.
