Michelle Obama booed at NASCAR race

I'll give you my reason. Here in Chicago, she was an executive at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and I know a few people that worked with her. They said that she tried her hardest to make sure that the hospital avoided providing any care to uninsured or poor patients. Of course, that's just what I've heard, and it could be false.

She worked at the hospital as the Director for Community Affairs and then as VP for Community and External Affairs. Pretty sure that position excluded her from any input on hospital billing procedures.

Of course, we expect attendees at a major sporting event to have more class than kids at a concert. Don't you agree?
i'm english, so unless we're talking wimbledon or lawn bowls, no.

try sending samantha cameron to a leeds united home game, see what happens.

don't take this as a total sand-eared denial that there might just be a few racist undertones at a nascar meet, just saying it could/would have happened anyway given the stretched-to-breaking point high water mark that partisan politics has reached in your country.

I'm sure every president and first lady gets their share of boos. No need for outrage.

You'd probably be wrong, first ladies were traditionally given politeness if not gentlemanly respect. Some people think because she uses her station as first lady to speak out on social topics that she's fair game, because she's essentially a politician. But Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan and Jackie O and Pat Nixon were probably never booed. And of course not Lady Bird Johnson. Hillary Clinton was, however, and I'm guessing Mrs. O is ok with being held in that regard.

It is absolutely shameful to disrespect the First Lady in such a manner. That being said, there was definitely some booing but the cheering was significantly larger, so I don't think we should treat the crowd with one broad stroke.

This. There was some booing, but it wasn't nearly the entire crowd.

Michelle Obama is still pretty highly regarded/favorable in the US overall, as other first ladies were.

I'm sure she wasn't surprised

This should have been her reaction.

The first lady doesn't deserve respect merely by virtue of her status.

still irritates me people act like this still, I mean what, is it honestly that big of a deal? I want to punch people like that. Ignorance will be the end of this county someday :-(

Yeah, but pretty much anyone on hospital boards does this, even the priests and nuns on the Catholic hospital boards. ;)

I like how the concern trolls in this thread are all "She hasn't done anything to deserve respect" as if booing someone is the most neutral position you could hold.

Hey look! That man spent 50 dollars on a pair of shoes instead of charity! BOO HIM!

Laura Bush was pretty active on equally controversial social issues and she was never booed, or had politicians/news networks bash her for it.

Once again, just from what I've heard, but the Cook County Hospital System wanted UoC to help pick up a bit of the slack in the community when it came to the uninsured, and I've been told that she was against it. It may not necessarily be that she had any say in it, but her attitude and opinion was against it.

It just goes back to that one simple creed: It's okay if you're a Republican.

It's why Hillary/Michelle-bashing goes on with little fanfare but Nancy/Barbara/Laura were untouchable. Hell, even Chelsea Clinton got a ton of shit from Rush and crew, and Glenn Beck was mocking the Obama kids a while back.

Generally the media expects more out of Democrats, whereas angry Republicans are just "principled."

No idea about Laura Bush but Hillary Clinton certainly received her share of being ripped in the media during her time as FLOTUS, as did Nancy Reagan (mostly for the absurd Just Say No stuff, also there were rumors being thrown around that she was being banged by Frank Sinatra at the White House). Like I said, I'm pretty sure it comes with the job.

Exactly, the only ones are Hillary and Michelle. And Michelle is way different from power-suit Hillary. But she's still a former corporate executive and she's still black, not a socialite or a housewife. So she's 'dangerous'.

Although after Katrina, and Barbara Bush's comments "They should be happy that they have homes now" or something similar, I did hear people in some circles insult her, but she never got booed either. People were just surprised that her fluffy white exterior covered some pretty stark opinions.

I think there are way more factors involved than just saying that she was against helping those uninsured. For instance, what type of load would that have created and would it have compromised care for their other patients. I know that Rush Medical Center is about to help out with the Cook County system, but they have a brand new, huge hospital that will be opening up early next year. Managing a hospital is tough work, where tough decisions have to be made that not everyone will agree with. That said, it sounds like you are basing this all on second hand information, so I personally would not put too much stock in it.

Maybe im being naive but why does everyone automatically equate her being booed to "OMG everyone is racist".

To be fair Obama is an extremely liberal president who gets accused of being a socialist by many conservatives. They pretty much hate the guy. Mix that with the drunk people in attendance at the event and not surprised they booed. They hate everything he stands for.

Im sure that many dislike him because of his race but I really think that its based on such a strong Liberal view and them being against that.

Please.

I wouldn't go so far as to boo her, but I'd turn my back to her due to the insane amount of money she spends on her entourage.

I'm sure everyone on this particular trip was living it up in the typical top-shelf Michelle way.

I'm wondering why in the world she would choose a fucking NASCAR event to do anything...

Optimism, perhaps. Sometimes I think the Obamas have too much of it for this country's cut throat politics, which is a depressing conclusion.

You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Obama is not extremely liberal at all. And it's not just the booing, but everything else as well. That said, the people that first started pulling the race card in here were the people defending them.

You're not referring to the Secret Service detail that HAS to accompany her, are you?

:-/

You under the impression that she can travel with less? It doesn't work like that.

Huh? "Strong" liberal? lol

You do know that most of those reports are absolute bullshit, or are in line with every past president/first lady... Right?

Well maybe im wrong then

Ill be the first to admit that im not big into politics really. I live in a extremely redneck/southern city. Im mainly just going off what I hear co-workers and just people in general around here bitch about which is usually how much they hate Obama and how he is so "liberal" and what not.
