Millenials have weaker grip strength than previous generations.

And wrist strength too, I bet. Reading this makes me think about this one time in high school where my history teacher (an older man, ~50 yrs) lifted a rather heavy metal stool with just one hand grasping one leg of the stool without his wrist bending from the weight. None of the (senior) students were able to do it, not even the varsity football players.

The main reason my grip was good as a kid was because I played baseball and split wood. Other than that there would have been no physical reason for my hands to be strong lol

My 60-something year old father beat a bunch of 20-somethings at arm wrestling at a bucks night a couple of years back.

We worked at an office most of his life but was always active around the house/garden, doing a lot of projects. Old school screw drivers, wood saws and hammers build grip strength for life, not to mention shovels and mattocks.

My school had monkey bars, but I didn't use them a lot. Sometimes we'd get up on top of them.

I don't really have the upper body strength to hold myself up, even now.

I'm going with lack of Jungle Gyms. Also I had tug of war match today so right now my grip strength is pretty low hehe.

Funny, I just bought a gripper to work on my grip strength.

We have a 150 pound one at work. I can close it, but on the first squeeze every joint in my hand pops.

I'm not that surprised, and I don't think it's bullshit either. Consider for a moment what the average kid / teen would be doing in the '80s versus sitting down at home playing video games today. In fact, I'm sure most of us here already had that experience considering this IS a gaming forum, even if we stayed for the OT.

Lifting fixes some of that, but it doesn't change the social average or cumulative lack of training.

I don't even know how strong of a grip I have since I avoid/rarely do handshakes. Crushing hands isn't my thing lol.

Those are interesting. I imagine it might be better for pure grip strength than regular grip strengtheners since it works each finger individually. They range from 1.5-9lbs per finger....which would you recommend for someone with already decent grip strength?

I started on the 9 pound per finger. You may not be able to do as many squeezes or holds for as long since your forearms will tire out, but my stamina built up quickly and I was able to go up in weight.

Right now Ihave an 11 pound one ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UMHUSI/?tag=neogaf0e-20 ) and do 20 squeezes followed by a 30 second hold and repeat until failure.

why are scientists taking the time to test this out

what's the point?

Because asking "How ya doing? Good?" is not a very scientific way to get data.

Also, health markers, general population data, cinderella science (the best!), that stuff. Real science is boring and kind of stupid, until something shows up and suddenly it's the greatest thing ever. Science is a black swan: don't ask whether it's stupid, because it is until it ain't. *

* = for some reason Rocky got on my mind and I couldn't help writing that in his voice.
(Rocky explaining science would be a great Youtube channel though)

lol. I read an article awhile back about how Millenials do not know how to change a tire and such. If that's true then that explains it.

I LOVE this.

I know it's probably meaningless nonsense, but it's hilarious and they will get defensive about it, clutching weakly at straws. Staring at the rows of unopened jars in their fridge. Balling their fists in rage with all the vigor of a Victorian orphan with pleurisy.

Can you open a beer bottle with your eye socket?

Is it because we're not pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps? >_>

I don't care if it doesn't make sense!

I had trouble opening a bottle of water this morning. I just chalked it up to still being groggy. Now I'm not so sure lol :(

I can't recall a single moment in my life when having a better grip strength would have done anything meaningful.
Then you never had to dangle from a helicopter holding onto your wife to stop her falling to her death .. other wise the terrorists would win.. before?!?
