Miyamoto considers Move and Natal a threat to Nintendo

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto’s told Edge that Microsoft and Sony’s rush to motion with Natal and Move is “threatening” behaviour.

“Whenever something we have created and presented is followed by copies, we always feel it is threatening,” said the dev legend.

“More than that, we’re concerned that others are trying to do something similar for the sake of it. It’s not encouraging to Nintendo.”

The exec was answering a question on whether or not she saw parallels between the uptake of motion controllers and the “borrowing” of analog sticks in the PlayStation generation.

Both Natal and Move will release towards the end of this year, and both will feature heavily at E3 later this month.

Nintendo will show its latest hardware, 3DS, at the LA event.

Well, at least Miyamoto is honest.

MEGATON. Miyamoto sex changed confirmed.

Thank you, Miyamoto, for saying what we all feel.

I promise you that even recently he said it isn't a threat. What has changed?

I think, that he means it's not a threat in the terms of stealing market share.
But it is a threat in undermining what Nintendo is trying to do by watering down motion controls.

Release Wii Sports Vacation and stop worrying. Nintendo will always be best at exploiting gimmicks. Sony, traditionally, is horrible at it.

Thread would've been better if it said "Miyamoto considers Move and Natal copies of Wii".

I'm not sure if you're insulting Sony or Nintendo here.

There's two ways the OP could have gone, "Nintendo considers Natal and Move copies" or "Nintendo considers Natal and Move threats".

I'm not sure which was worse.

Somehow Sony copied Nintendo from the future when they started working with their Motion Controller in 2001...

Ooooooookay

i was gonna make a stupid throwaway shit post about how this thread was going to become a battlefield but then i saw this:

okay everyone understands that sony was experimenting with motion control for years but come the fuck on the pretending that the pointer wand and separate analog stick complement and their button layouts are not wiimote inspired is just being purposefully blind

Didn't someone from Sony say that the whole "ball on a stick" technology really became a REAL commercial project like a year or two years ago or something, rather than just the ongoing R&D thing it had been?

Maybe he is mad Sony is advancing the technology they brought forth to the masses before Nintendo has a chance?

Is it 2001 now?

Man, this keeps getting moved back.
No but generally when you 'copy' something, you never have an intention of doing something, and then once you see someone else doing it, you do it.

Of course Nintendo doing motion controls has sealed our motion controlled future fate, but there were things in the woodworks pre-Wii.

Do you really think that Sony would be releasing the Move this year, or even this generation, if not for the Wii?
It really doesn't matter if they had a tech demo a billion years ago, they're shoving it out now just to try and grab a piece of the Wii pie.

Of course Sony wouldn't be releasing a motion controller if Nintendo hadn't made it successful.

No, the Move IS the monolith. Sony found it in its current state at the dawn of man, then sat on it, unaltered, for several million years until 2001, when they decided it was time to bring it back. But then they realized that they were being too hasty, so they waited nearly a decade to reveal it (the team in charge of watching over it never had any contact with the outside world, making sure it emerged from the vault without any influence from the Wii remote).

In 2004, Miyamoto came on stage with a sword in hand. In 2010, he'll stand on stage without any sword at all.

Kevin Butler definitely needs to copy this for E3

Sony always has been advancing Nintendo's technology, since PSX, there's nothing new to get mad about.

GASP! The Nintendo master himself is threatened? Then he does have a weakness.

Imagine how devastated he must've been at the Nintendon't and the Genesis Blast Processing commercials.

Oh man

I found that thing in my closet a few weeks ago

It took about five seconds of bewildered terror and confusion before I remembered why I had that

:lol I keep that by my bathroom sink. People always ask "wtf is that!"

Miyamoto is being disrespectful of Richard Marks' work on the technology for the past ten years. Or maybe is he just ignorant?
